Australian Finale For Anamoe Before Royal Ascot Attempt

Godolphin's decorated multiple Group 1 winner Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss {Aus}) is aiming at the G2 Apollo S. at Randwick on Feb. 11 prior to the G1 Chipping Norton S. in his last Southern Hemisphere campaign prior to a crack at Royal Ascot, Racing.com reported on Tuesday.

“His ultimate goal this year would be to get to Royal Ascot and so his autumn would revolve around that,” Cummings told the publication. “We're looking at three to four runs in the autumn with him. We want to bring him over to Europe with plenty of residual fitness from his Australian campaign, we would like him to be full of stored energy by the time he gets there, so he can have his opportunity to produce his best run there.”

Last year's G1 Cox Plate S. hero is eyeing either the one-mile G1 Queen Anne S. or the 1 1/4-mile G1 Prince Of Wales's S. during the Royal meeting in June.

“He'd be more likely to run in a Queen Anne, but it wouldn't hurt to have him nominated in both races, just in case you'd bump into a Baaeed (GB), then you would avoid the Queen Anne and the Prince Of Wales's looks like the better option,” Cummings added.

“Having said that, both races are looking extremely strong this year and there's no hiding at Royal Ascot no matter where you run. He'd be a little foreign up the straight over a mile for the first time in his career, but if he's to win at Royal Ascot, then he's going to have to deal with a foreign challenge.

“I've considered running him in the [G1] Lockinge [S.] a month beforehand and I haven't completely given up on that, as it tends to be a clearly suitable lead-up to the Queen Anne but running him fresh off the plane has got its advantages too. I'd say the trip overseas would be the horse's swansong.

“He'll be ready to cover mares by the end of the year.”

Caravel Named Top Midlantic-bred of 2022

In the final Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred/The Racing Biz poll of 2022, GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint heroine Caravel (Mizzen Mast) was named 2022's top Midlantic-bred. The honor marks the fifth straight year the Top Midlantic-bred was also a Breeders' Cup winner.

In addition to her Breeders' Cup triumph, the Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Zeezee Zoomzoom (Congrats) racked up a record of 8-5-0-0 for earnings of $930,983, which included wins in the GIII Franklin County S. and GIII Intercontinental S. She is the sixth Pennsylvania-bred to win a Breeders' Cup race, joining Go For Wand, Tikkanen, Alphabet Soup, Finest City, and Shamrock Rose.

“Breeders all over the region are breeding outstanding horses,” Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, said. “It's important to take a moment to reflect on and celebrate those achievements.”

Caravel, who is owned by Sheik Fahad's Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel and Madaket Stables and trained by Brad Cox, was scheduled to be sold at Keeneland in November, but was withdrawn with plans for a 6-year-old campaign, which includes a trip to Royal Ascot and a defense of her title in the Breeders' Cup.

Charles Byrnes Has Dubai Gold Target For Irish Leger Winner Sonnyboyliston

Widely regarded as one of the best dual-purpose trainers in Ireland, Charles Byrnes has taken over the training of classy Flat stayer and 2021 G1 Irish St Leger scorer Sonnyboyliston (Ire) (Power {GB}), who could make his debut for his new connections in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup on Mar. 25.

Sonnyboyliston has not been seen since finishing second in a valuable handicap at Riyadh almost a year ago for Johnny Murtagh, who guided the gelding to six career wins, including an epic in the valuable Sky Bet Ebor before plundering Irish St Leger glory in that same memorable season.

However, the 6-year-old, who carried the colours of the Kildare Racing Club on all 15 of his career starts and won over €1 million in prize-money, has been sold privately to continue his career with Byrnes.

Speaking to What's The Craic DubEye, a new Irish-run website in Dubai, Byrnes explained how the Gold Cup at Meydan could be Sonnyboyliston's first port of call, and said, “Definitely, Dubai would be a possibility if it doesn't come too early for him.”

He added, “We got Sonnyboyliston. It's very exciting to get him with his profile–an Irish St Leger and Ebor winner. We're very fortunate to get him. We're very excited.”

The Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot-winning trainer, who sent out Run For Oscar (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) to take the Cesarewitch at Newmarket in October, also revealed that Sonnyboyliston's new owner has also sent him a half-sister to the star stayer.

Byrnes said, “We also have his half-sister [by Starspangledbanner (Aus)] and she'll be starting off early in the Flat season. She's very exciting, too. Hopefully she'll go the right way.”

His Flat string may be growing but Byrnes will forever be associated with plundering big-race riches over jumps and is charting a path towards this year's Cheltenham Festival with leading Pertemps Final hope Shoot First (Ire) (Westerner {GB}) and Stayers' Hurdle candidate Blazing Khal (Ire) (Kalanisi {Ire}), who the trainer admitted was only 50-50 to make it to the race.

Byrnes said, “We had a great day in Cheltenham already with Shoot First when he won the qualifier in October. He's owned by a great bunch of lads. He's qualified for the Festival now so hopefully he goes there with a chance.”

On Blazing Khal, he added, “We're 50-50. We didn't have a great run with him all along but I think we are getting back on track to some degree. Whether Cheltenham will come too soon for him is debatable. We'll try and get a run into him within the next month and go from there. You've Aintree and Punchestown. You also have France, which could be an option for him further down the road.”

Subjectivist Eyes Return On Saudi Cup Undercard

Not seen since Royal Ascot success two years ago, Group 1 winner Subjectivist (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) could return on the Saudi Cup undercard in Riyadh next month, according to trainer Charlie Johnston.

“Entries closed yesterday morning for the Saudi Cup meeting and Subjectivist has been entered in the [G3] Red Sea Turf H.–[the] 1 mile and 7-furlong race,” Johnston said.

Winner of the 2021 G1 Gold Cup June 17, the now-6-year-old was previously victorious in the 2020 G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 25 and the 2021 G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in March of 2021. During his win at the Royal Meeting, he sustained a potentially career-threatening leg injury. While there were initially hopes he would return to defend his Gold Cup crown, it did not happen by the summer.

Subjectivist is now back in full work mode, and while Johnston is taking a day-to-day approach, he is pleased with what he has seen so far.

Reporting on Subjectivist's progress, “He's been back in work since early October and has been cantering all the way through December and into January now. There's still a long way to go–we haven't started to turn the screw just yet with any faster work.

“Every day the fingers are crossed watching him, but so far so good.”

Just this week, Johnston took over the training licence fully from his record-breaking father Mark. He has already celebrated a pair of winners.
