Love Reigns Tops Ward Exacta In FanDuel Limestone S.

Topping a Wesley Ward-trained exacta, Love Reigns got her 3-year-old campaign off on the right foot with a late-charging win in Friday's FanDuel Limestone S. over her preferred 5 1/2-furlong distance. Named 'TDN Rising Star' off a 9 3/4-length romp at first asking over this same track nearly a year ago, the daughter of U S Navy Flag then tried her hand across the pond at Royal Ascot, checking in fourth beaten three lengths in the G2 Queen Mary S. Back in the States and back in the winner's circle for Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. last August, Love Reigns ended her season with a distant finish against the boys in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Stuck behind rivals after a sharp break Friday, the filly was at least able to save ground as she beat only a handful of horses up the backstretch led by Accomplished Girl (Street Boss). Still boxed in as the field swung past the quarter pole, Love Reigns had to check sharply before tipping inside to regain her momentum. Under an expertly-timed ride by Joel Rosario, she dove through an opening between rivals with a sixteenth to run and charged up the fence to nail stablemate Lady Hollywood just before the wire as the 5-2 favorite.

“She's a special filly,” praised trainer Wesley Ward. “I've kind of been waiting for this to come out since her maiden win here. She likes Keeneland, she loved the course when she broke her maiden here a year ago, and we're just real, real happy it worked out. (Jockey) Joel (Rosario) is kind of my come-from-behind guy that I ride on horses that I like to do that with–which aren't many, but this being one. He's just a phenomenal rider. He gets them back there, gets them to relax. He had us a little worried there at the eighth pole, but thank God the seas parted and he came through and he won.”

Royal Ascot Hero Missed The Cut Joins American Trainer John Sadler

The lure of winning top-level dirt races in America has prompted the owners of Missed The Cut (Quality Road) to transfer the Royal Ascot winner from Newmarket trainer George Boughey to John Sadler's California-based barn.

Missed The Cut propelled Boughey onto the big stage when landing the Golden Gates S. Handicap at the royal meeting last year but disappointed as a 13-8 favorite when only managing fourth behind Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G3 Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia when last seen.

A decision was made shortly after that Riyadh effort to transfer Missed The Cut to America, where he will now be trained with a dirt campaign in mind, according to Bill Farish of Lane's End Farm, part-owners in the horse.

“He's joined John Sadler and he is excited to get him,” Farish told TDN Europe on Friday. “Missed The Cut looks wonderful and travelled over well. He's gone through his quarantine and now he's in John's barn. George Boughey did a great job with him and had him in great shape for the trip. It's exciting to get him over here and he doesn't have a lot of miles under him.”

Sam Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock and Boughey bought Missed The Cut for just 40,000gns from Shadwell at the Tattersalls February Sale in 2022.

It proved a shrewd investment with Missed The Cut winning three of his first four races, including that Royal Ascot triumph, after which Lane's End bought into the colt.

On future plans, Farish said, “We're hopeful for Missed The Cut. He trained on the dirt in Saudi Arabia and looked like he really liked it–moved really well on it. We're hopeful that he can be as good or better on the dirt.”

He added, “The idea is to angle him for Grade I races on the dirt if he shows an affinity for it. We have a good ownership group that is hopeful that we can have some fun with him. If not, we can always go back to the turf with him.

“We're just going to see how he gets on. He obviously likes racing over a mile-and-a-quarter and there are a lot of great races over here on the dirt over that distance.”

Royal Ascot Dream Still Alive For Australian Ace Anamoe

He may have had his colours lowered by British raider Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Randwick last week, but Australian star Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss) is still in contention to run at Royal Ascot this summer.

A nine-time Group 1 winner in Australia, Anamoe could only manage third behind William Haggas's Dubai Honour, but connections are not giving up on the Ascot dream despite most firms pushing his odds for the G1 Queen Anne S. out to 12-1.

Godolphin Australia spokesman Vin Cox told racenet, “We've still got Anamoe in light work. We are not making any excuses for his defeat last week but we feel he wasn't quite at his best.

“Anamoe will be given a chance to freshen up and we will see how he is later this month then make a decision on Royal Ascot. We don't have to lock anything in just yet.”

The same statement applies for James Cummings' stablemate Aft Cabin (Aus) (Astern {Aus}), who put himself in the Royal Ascot picture when landing the G2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint last Saturday.

Subjectivist Headed Directly To The Gold Cup

A winner of the 2021 G1 Gold Cup at Ascot, Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) will point to the 2023 edition without another prep race, trainer Charlie Johnston revealed on Wednesday.

Raced by Dr. Jim Walker, the 6-year-old entire has returned to the races after sustaining a tendon injury later in 2021. Unplaced in the G3 Red Sea Turf H. in Riyadh at the end of February, he was much improved when third in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan on Mar. 25. He won that Meydan contest in 2021. The G3 Sagaro S. and the G2 Yorkshire Cup later in the spring were under consideration for the Johnston trainee.

“We've had a bit of debate about Sagaros and Yorkshire Cups and things, but the plan now for him, all being well and should we be able to get him there, is to go straight to Ascot,” said Johnston.

“With that in mind he's just swimming and on the water walker at the moment and having an easy couple of weeks before we try to build him back up for the Gold Cup.

“We have a big, black cloud hanging over us every day now since his tendon injury and how long is a piece of string really, we don't know how many bullets are left in the gun for us to fire and with that in mind we don't really want to waste any in races like a Sagaro.

“He's going to be campaigned in the three or four races that we really want to win and, touch wood, he has taken two races in a four-week window quite well.

“But once you've had a tendon injury, that is always something that is hanging over you to some degree and as a result we are only going to go into battle when it matters and the next time that will be, will be the Ascot Gold Cup.”
