Freshman Sire Advertise Off The Mark At Salisbury

Manton Park Stud resident Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) became Europe's latest first-crop sire to get off the mark when the Ralph Beckett-trained Matters Most (GB) prevailed in Thursday's £10,000 Byerley Stud British EBF Novice S. over five furlongs at Salisbury.

Originally sold for 135,000gns as a foal, the colt was knocked down at 500,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1 to Richard Knight on behalf of Saleh Al Homaizi and was one of 17 horses later reoffered privately through Tattersalls when payment for the yearlings was not forthcoming.

Mick Kinane stepped in to buy Matters Most on behalf of Robert Ng after the colt had been broken in at Vicarage Farm by jockey Adam Kirby and his partner Megan Evans.

“Obviously a lot of people liked him at the sale and after what happened there was the possibility to try to negotiate something,” explained Rupert Pritchard-Gordon, racing manager to the Hong Kong-based Ng.

“Adam did a really nice job with the horse and was really happy with him. He just seems to be very mature and very professional. Ralph has always liked him. He is a big, imposing colt with a nice attitude.”

He continued, “Mick Kinane rode for Robert Ng and when Mick bought [multiple Group 1 winner] Romantic Warrior, Robert said, 'If Mick could find me something nice I'd really appreciate it'.

“As a general rule, Mr Ng doesn't buy a lot of yearlings, he usually likes to have seen them race. But he was very keen to renew the link with Mick and on this occasion it just seemed the right thing to do. Mick got on to Tatts, and Mr Ng was able to negotiate a settlement with them.”

With two starts and a win for Matters Most, naturally thoughts turn to Royal Ascot, but Pritchard-Gordon advised that the colt's programme will be very much set by his trainer. 

“We'll see what Ralph wants to do with him next,” he said. “Robert Ng is very patient and he's not someone who would put any pressure on a trainer to go somewhere in particular. If Ralph wants to go to Ascot he can go, and if Ralph wants to do something else, Mr Ng wouldn't argue.”

Pritchard-Gordon added, “When Mr Ng bought him, the original idea was that he was going to go to Hong Kong and then he decided to leave him in Europe for the time being. He's a mature and likeable youngster and, with that pedigree, you hope he's a horse you can get straight on with.”

MATTERS MOST (GB) (c, 2, Advertise {GB}–Squash {GB} {MGSP-Eng}, by Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) shaped with promise when third on debut over this trip at Newbury last month and he escaped the early skirmishes to stalk the pace in a close-up second here. Launching his bid passing the quarter-mile marker, the 6-5 favourite inched ahead entering the final furlong and kept on strongly from there to account for Liv My Life (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) by a 1 1/4 lengths, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Showcasing {GB}). Matters Most is the third foal and scorer produced by G3 Nell Gwyn S. runner-up and G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. third Squash (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}). He is a half-brother to GIII San Simoen S. victor Motorious (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) and a yearling colt by Sergei Prokofiev.

Soumillon Rides First Winner Since 60-Day Suspension

Jockey Christophe Soumillon rode his first winner since returning from his 60-day suspension with his very first mount in France. He was aboard Black Milord Tavel (Fr) (Saddex {GB}) on Saturday, who won a two-mile Chantilly handicap by a head for trainer Eric Lecoiffier.

The Belgian earned his suspension for elbowing fellow jockey Rossa Ryan out of the saddle in a race at Saint-Cloud on Sept. 30. Soumillon, who lost his retainer with His Highness The Aga Khan for the elbowing incident, had traveled to South Africa last weekend and he also had a ride at Meydan in Dubai on Friday, but did not record a winner.

His ban covered potentially lucrative international expeditions, including QIPCO British Champions Day, the Breeders' Cup, the G1 Japan Cup, and Longines Hong Kong International Races. Herve Naggar is his current agent.

French Gaming Police Ask For Soumillon’s Licence To Be Withdrawn “Indefinitely” Or That His Ban Be Lengthened

According to information obtained by Jour de Galop, France's Gaming Police mailed a letter to France Galop earlier this week requesting that suspended jockey Christophe Soumillon's licence be withdrawn indefinitely or that his ban be lengthened, the paper writes in its Sunday edition. Soumillion was suspended for two months after elbowing fellow jockey Rossa Ryan out of the saddle during the running of the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon on Sept. 30.

“The fall (of Rossa Ryan) was not accidental, but was caused by Christophe Soumillon. This behavior is voluntary and dangerous,” the Gaming Police writes in the letter, according to the JDG. They report that the letter goes on to say that in May, they had asked Soumillion to modify his behavior, which they described as “risky” for other jockeys. “Instead,” the letter reads, “the deliberate, dangerous behavior of Mr. Soumillon, in the middle of the race and at a high speed in the stretch, presents a serious risk to the public order within horse racing.”

The JDG reports that the letter goes on to say that the incident garnered international attention, which portrayed French racing in a bad light. The police ask that France Galop either increase his suspension to a maximum of six months, or to withdraw his license altogether pending further investigation. The Jour de Galop notes that they have followed the same procedure used to ban jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot this past Tuesday.

Soumillon Handed Two-Month Ban After Elbowing Ryan Out Of Saddle  

Christophe Soumillon, one of the most decorated riders in the world, has been handed a two-month ban after elbowing fellow jockey Rossa Ryan out of the saddle at Saint-Cloud on Friday.

The Belgian native was riding Syros for Francis Graffard in the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon Jockey Club de Turquie when making contact with Ryan, who was aboard the Ralph Beckett-trained Captain Wierzba.

In what looked a deliberate elbow, Soumillon edged Ryan out of the saddle and, while he denied any malice to the incident, apologies on At The Races afterwards by saying it was “not a nice act” and that he had made “a misjudgement”.

Syros went on to finish second but was disqualified by the French stewards who gave Soumillon his lengthy ban. The rider will be free to ride on Arc weekend at ParisLongchamp as the two-month ban does not come into effect until next week.

 

“I received a little bit of pressure from Rossa's mount on my outside trying to get a better position behind Ryan,” Soumillon said. “I was just behind Ryan at the time. And I put my elbow against him just to make him understand I wasn't going to the inside and unfortunately when I asked my horse to stay there and go a little bit to the right, I pushed him for one stride or two and he fell off.

“Straight away, I knew, I'd made a mistake. I'm terribly sad with what happened because I hate seeing stuff like this and when you are doing that it's even more terrible, so I want to apologise to everyone, not just only one person who owns the horse or trains the horse or even the jockey.”

He added: “I just saw him [Ryan] now and he's fine and the horse too so I'm happy for that, but for all the people loving racing it was not a nice act from my side and I am terribly sorry and I want to apologise for what I did today.

“I just received a big suspension from the France-Galop stewards. I'm going to be suspended for two months – 60 days of racing. So that's a very big thing. So unfortunately my end-of-season is now gone. But I accept the sentence for what I did, for the terrible mistake like I said.

“And for sure that sentence is an example to others then that's acceptable but for sure, I shouldn't do that. I didn't do it on purpose to make him fall off his horse. I was just trying to keep my position. But with the ground … I probably did with a little power. It was a misjudgment from my side.

“I wasn't trying to make him fall off his horse. Unfortunately he was side by side with me, his iron goes up and he goes over the horse. I don't really understand what happened in that moment because it's going really fast but it's a terrible thing for what I did. I know a lot of people are not going to excuse me, but I feel really bad at the moment for what happened.”

Ryan reported that he and his mount were fine after the incident. He said, “The horse is fine, I'm fine. That's the main thing. I'm 100 per cent.”
