RoR Showcase Returns on Apr. 23

The Retraining of Racehorses Showcase will return live at Hartpury University and College in Gloucestershire on Saturday, Apr. 23. Supported by the Horserace Betting Levy Board, the RoR Showcase is dedicated to displaying the versatility of retrained racehorses. There will be a superb line-up of star former racehorses working with top equestrian experts, trainers and top riders, who will give visitors an inspirational day of live demos, close-up clinics, displays, advice and expertise. Tickets are £15 per ticket (saving £5), or car share special of three tickets for two at £30 (saving £10) until Apr. 22. After that date, tickets are available on the day at £20 per person. Charity Auction to Be Part of RoR Racing to Cricket Day

There will be seven lots, including a share in a racehorse and nominations to stallions Nathaniel (Ire) and Time Test (GB), on offer during the charity auction portion of the Racing to Cricket Day, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) announced on Tuesday.

Other lots include two tickets on Centre Court at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships and accompanying hospitality; four seats for a production of “The Nutcracker” at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden with dinner at the Balconies restaurant; the use of a fully catered private box for 14 people on the finishing line at Ascot Racecourse excluding Royal Ascot; a case of vintage 2013 Grand Vin de Lafite wine; and a quarter-share (25%) in a yearling filly by Twilight Son (GB) with all expenses paid for one year. The auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 5, but RoR is also accepting bids by email at auction@ror.org.uk up to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.

During the Racing to Cricket Day, eight racing teams will compete at Wormsley Cricket Ground, near High Wycombe on Sunday, Sept. 5 to win the 2021 RoR Racing to Cricket Trophy.

Philip Freedman New RoR Chairman

Owner/breeder Philip Freedman has been named the new Chairman of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) charity, the British Horseracing Authority and RoR announced on Tuesday. Freedman, part of the sport’s tripartite Member’s Committee as the Chair of the Horsemen’s Group, succeeds Paul Roy. His term will begin on Jan. 1, 2021.

“I am delighted to be taking over as Chair of Retraining of Racehorses,” said Freedman. “As someone who has spent much of their life working with horses and within the racing and breeding industries, I recognise the importance of ensuring that the horses we breed and train for racing are also provided with a fulfilling second career.

“Under Paul’s stewardship RoR has made considerable progress and become a highly respected organisation throughout the wider equestrian world and with fellow equine welfare charities. I am looking forward to building on that progress and working with the Horse Welfare Board to help them deliver the industry’s welfare strategy.”

“It has been a great honour to chair RoR for the past seven years, and I’m proud of the progress that has been made to improve the welfare and aftercare of thoroughbreds,” said Roy.

“I wish Philip, the trustees and the team the best of luck as they look to ensure that through the work of RoR British racing remains a world leader in the aftercare of retired racehorses.”
