Sadler Plans To Work Rock Your World Twice In California Before Shipping To Louisville

Trainer John Sadler plans to keep Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World in California for as long as possible before shipping East for the Kentucky Derby, he told the Thoroughbred Daily News this week. The 3-year-old son of Candy Ride will work this weekend and the next at Santa Anita, then fly to Louisville on the Sunday before the Kentucky Derby.

“I'm very strong about staying in California because we know one thing we have here that they don't have there: We're not going to get rain in April,” Sadler told the TDN. “But maybe the racing gods will knock me down for saying that.”

Bred in Kentucky by California-based trainer Ron McAnally and his wife, Deborah, Rock Your World had won twice on the dirt before trying the main track for the first time in the Santa Anita Derby.

“I also wanted to start on the grass because I thought it would be easier,” Sadler added. “He's a big horse-wanted to give him time to develop, grow up, mature into himself. He's done that.”

Rock Your World put in an impressive front-running performance to win the Derby prep going away, and McAnally bought Sadler a celebratory egg roll the next morning at Clocker's Corner at Santa Anita.

Ron McAnally Could Win His First Derby..as a Breeder

Twenty-four years after he last started a horse in the race, Ron McAnally could achieve as a breeder what he was never accomplished as a trainer–win the GI Kentucky Derby. Along with his wife Deborah, McAnally is the breeder of the GI Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}), who will be among the favorites come Derby day.

It is the latest chapter in a Hall of Fame career that has included wins with superstars like John Henry, Paseana and Bayakoa and three Eclipse Awards as the nation's top trainer but has fizzled out as McAnally has tried to deal with the prejudice owners seem to have when it comes to aging trainers. He is 88 and has been a part of the Southern California circuit since 1948. He has just six horses in his stable, five of which he owns. Since 2012, the most winners he has had in any single year is seven.

“The older you get, people don't want you,” he said. “They want a young trainer even if they don't have any experience. They won't choose an older trainer that has a lot of experience.”

But McAnally has not grown bitter. He is happy to still be training and says he enjoys every minute of it.

“I love being out here,” McAnally said last year. “It put me where I am, and I tell everybody, 'If you love something you're doing, it's not a job. People sit on the freeway five days a week and they can't wait till the weekend comes to get a couple of days off.”

And in Rock Your World he has a horse to follow and root for in this year's Triple Crown races, knowing that his fingerprints are all over this success story. He trained Rock Your World's sire, Candy Ride (Arg) and was the owner, breeder and trainer of his dam, Charm The Maker (Empire Maker). He also trained, owned and bred the colt's second and third dam.

“I give all the credit to the mare, Charm The Maker,” he said. “She has produced nothing but stakes horses and winners.”

McAnally's small stable includes She's Our Charm, the 5-year-old full sister to Rock Your World and the third-place finisher in the 2020 GIII Robert J. Frankel S. With Rock Your World, McAnally let him go through the ring at the 2019 Keeneland September sale, where he was bought for $650,000 and is now owned by the partnership of Hronis Racing LLC and Talla Racing LLC and trained by John Sadler.

“I thought the world of this colt,” McAnally said of Rock Your World. “I was in the stall with him before he sold.”

Looking back, McAnally wishes the horse didn't meet his reserve, which would have meant that he would still be his owner and trainer and, most likely, on his way back to Churchill Downs with a serious Derby contender.

“We didn't get to keep him. That's just the way life goes,” he said.

But he's happy with the way the story turned out.

“I have no regrets,” he said. “I've known John Sadler since he started off here many years ago working for a veterinarian. I've been friends with John for a long time. A couple of days after the Santa Anita Derby he came over to me at Clocker's Corner and I congratulated him and said he deserves a lot of credit because he has done a great job with this horse.”

McAnally's specialty was never young colts. Most of his major wins came with older horses and grass horses, but he did win the Arkansas Derby twice when it was a Grade II race. He won it in 1990 with Silver Ending and the following year with Olympio. He's also had a pair of winners in the GI Hollywood Futurity, with Valiant Nature in 1993 and with Matty G. in 1995. Starting with Super Moment in 1980, he has run 10 horses in the Kentucky Derby, the latest being Hello (Ire) in 1997. None have finished in the top three.

The problem, he says, is that he never came to Churchill Downs with the right horse.

“As I've told Bob Baffert a number of times, 'Just give me the horse.'” he said. “You are supposed to win when you have a horse like John Henry. A hotwalker could train a good horse. Everyone wants to get the credit when they win a big race. But I truly believe and will say for the rest of my life, you will never succeed if you don't have the right horse. If you don't have any good horses, you'll never do well.”

He hopes his next star is already in his barn. He owns and trains Rock Your World's full brother, a 2-year-old colt named He's Our Maker. He's not going to let this one get away and he's not going anywhere. Can he win the 2022 Derby as a trainer? You never know.

Out Of The Weeds: Rock Your World Wins Santa Anita Derby In Main Track Debut

Although he was two for two on grass, Rock Your World had one big question to answer on Saturday at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.:  Would he run as well on dirt?  Question answered, as he dominated nine rivals en route to a rousing 4 ¼-length win in the 84th running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby.  Ridden by Umberto Rispoli and trained by John Sadler, the 3-year-old colt by Candy Ride, who was bred by Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally and his wife Debbie, got a mile and one eighth in 1:49.17.

With longshot Parnelli and favored Medina Spirit gunning for the early lead as expected, Rispoli appeared to take his measure of the competition heading into the clubhouse turn, allowing his mount  to get into stride, which he did, taking command into the turn and from there, dictating terms throughout.

With a three-quarter-length advantage on both Parnelli and Medina Spirit at the half mile pole, Rock Your World got stronger as the race progressed, chugging through splits of :22.42, :46.11, 1:10.64 and 1:36.27.  Although both Parnelli and Medina Spirit were “all-in” a quarter mile out, the Derby was essentially over as none of the others could make up any ground through the lane.

“We have been laying in the weeds,” said Sadler, who bagged his second Runhappy Santa Anita Derby.  “I thought it would be good to start this horse off on the turf, much like Omaha Beach, and develop.  The plan was to run him a couple of times on the turf and now it was time to get the points.  We gotta get the points to get to Kentucky.

“…The post (position) dictated our strategy.  I saw Umberto in the paddock this morning at 8 a.m. and I told him 'Go big or go home.'  We had to get out of there with the scratch inside (of number one Roman Centurian) of us.  It worked out great and I'm very excited.”

A handy winner of the ungraded Pasadena Stakes going a mile on turf Feb. 27, Rock Your World was off at 5-1 and paid $12.40, $4.60 and $3.40.

Owned by Hronis Racing, LLC or Talla Racing, LLC, Rock Your World is out of the McAnally's Empire Maker mare Charm the Maker.  With the winner's share of $450,000, Rock Your World increased his earnings to $546,600 and is now unbeaten in three starts.

Favored at 4-5, Medina Spirit appeared to have a perfect trip while second-best, finishing 2 ¼ lengths in front of Medina Spirit.  Ridden by John Velazquez, Medina Spirit paid $2.80 and $2.20.

“The horse ran well, but the winner took the lead on a fast track and kept running,” said Velazquez. “My horse kept coming and kept coming but couldn't catch up. He did have some left in the tank at the end and he kept coming, but the other horse got away pretty well and opened up again. It was too hard to catch up.”

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Dream Shake was forwardly placed throughout, but never threatened for the win.  Off at 9-2, he paid $2.80 to show.

“We had a good trip and it was a bit, you know, drawing gate side was not the best spot but the horse was travelling well and the race went well,” said Prat.

With 170 Kentucky Derby qualifying points at stake, Rock Your World will receive 100, with 40, 20 and 10 points awarded to the second, third and fourth place finishers.

Rock Your World Packs Stretch Punch To Snare Pasadena Stakes

He may be green as grass, but that's where his promising future lies.  Rock Your World, who stretched out off an impressive debut, rallied powerfully late and left no doubt about who was best in Saturday's $100,000 Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita, as he prevailed by a widening  2 ¼ lengths under Umberto Rispoli at the Arcadia, Calif., track.  Trained by John Sadler, the 3-year-old colt by Candy Ride got a flat mile on turf in 1:34.39.

A joint second with favored Cathkin Peak, about 2 ½ lengths off pacesetter Commander Khai heading into the clubhouse turn, Rock Your World maintained his position up the backside and was one length off the lead three furlongs out with Cathkin Peak shuffled back a bit to his inside.

Turning for home, it appeared it would boil down to Rock Your World with Rispoli and Cathkin Peak with Flavien Prat, as they lined up two and three wide outside Commander Khai, but Rock Your World belatedly kicked into high gear a sixteenth out and the Pasadena was over as Rock Your World hit the wire full of run in an effort that suggests he'll relish added real estate.

“This horse is still really green,” said Sadler.  “It's funny, we schooled him yesterday morning at 9:30 in the paddock, no problem.  Today, when we put the saddle on him, tight as hell!  He's got lessons to learn, but he's got a lot of talent.  He was very game and he galloped out super.  We love that about him.”

A 1 ¾ length maiden winner going six furlongs on turf Jan. 1, Rock Your World was the actual second choice at even money in a field of five sophomores and paid $4.20, $2.40 and $2.20.

“To be honest, I was afraid because the horse couldn't find his stride,” said Rispoli.  “He's so big I was trying to get him ready to switch leads at the top of the stretch, so he missed a couple of strides.  That's the reason Flavien came (inside) and had that little room to come through, (I) just opened the gap for him.”

Owned by Hronis Racing, LLC and David Talla, Rock Your World was bred in Kentucky by Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally and his wife Debra.  Out of their Empire Maker mare Charm the Maker, Rock Your World fetched $650,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

With the winner's share of $60,000, Rock Your World has earnings of $96,600 from his two wins.

Irish-bred Cathkin Peak, who broke his maiden for trainer Phil D'Amato in his Southern California debut Nov. 29 and who came off a one length win in the one mile Eddie Logan Stakes here on Dec. 27, was the actual even money favorite by just $2,990 under Prat and paid $2.20 and $2.10 while finishing one length in front of Red Flag.

A winner of the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes two starts back but a disappointing fourth as the 4-5 favorite in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity, the John Shirreffs-trained Red Flag ran a much improved race and overhauled Commander Khai by a neck on the wire.  Off at 7-1 with Ricardo Gonzalez up, Red Flag paid $2.40 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.08, 46.72, 1:10.41 and 1:22.44.
