El Kabeir Colt Best in G2 Premio Gran Criterium

Already a listed winner after taking Milan's Premio Giuseppe de Montel on June 30, El Kabeir colt Don Chicco (GB) bounced back from a second versus heavy 2-5 favourite Some Respect (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the Oct. 3 Listed Premio Vittorio Riva with a 1 1/4-length victory in the Premio Gran Criterium in Rome on Sunday.

Second in a local debutante heat over 1000 metres on May 1, the bay graduated by three lengths switched to the all-weather here just eight days later and was making his fifth start in the Gran Criterium. The 7-1 shot was widest of all in a battling fourth through the early stages as Il Sindacalista (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) set the pace with ears pricked. Full of run at the half-way point, Don Chicco had to adjust slightly as Some Respect veered into his lane, and although erratic in the stretch, forged past that foe to win. Some Respect was 2 1/4 lengths ahead of Baghed (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}) at the line, three-quarters of a length in advance of Vincere Insieme (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Il Sindacalista faded to last of five.

Pedigree Notes
Don Chicco is one of three black-type winners for young sire El Kabeir (Scat Daddy) and the first at group level. The Yeomanstown Stud-based stallion's Masekela (Ire) was second in the G2 Superlative S.

The fifth foal and second winner out of the unraced Otrooha, Don Chicco is followed by a yearling filly and a weanling colt both by Massaat (Ire). This is the extended family of dual G2 Hardwicke S. hero Maraahel (Ire) (Alzao), who was also runner-up in the G1 Juddmonte International S., as well as G1 Lockinge S. victor Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}).

First Stakes Winner For Highland Reel, as Atamisque Takes G2 Premio Dormello

Atamisque (Ire) (Highland Reel {Ire}), who was a course-and-distance winner when unveiled on Oct. 3, gave her sire his first black-type winner and group scorer in one fell swoop with a 3 1/2-length success in the G2 Premio Dormello in Rome on Sunday.

The 6-5 crowd's pick tracked the pace in sixth through the early going as Terra Del Sole (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) showed the way. That rival hugged the rail into the home straight as the rest of the field shifted away from the inside and was still clinging to the lead with 400 metres remaining. Asked for her bid out in the centre of the course, the bay drew level with new leader Jacinda at the furlong grounds, dismissed that rival handily and quickened well to win going away. Jacinda was 1 3/4 lengths to the good of a stubborn Terra Del Sole in third.

Pedigree Notes

Atamisque is the first foal out of Aury Touch, who won a pair of Italian listed stakes and was second in another six. After foaling the winner, the daughter of Pounced has since produced a yearling filly named French Fries (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and a weaning colt by Gleneagles (Ire). The dam is a half-sister to the group-placed Amyntas (Ity) (Desert Prince {Ire}), while Atamisque's third dam is three-time U.S. graded winner Nasty Storm (Gulch), who was also second in the GI Spinaway S. The last-named is the dam of dual Group 3 winner and G1 Phoenix S. third Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War).

Churchill Sires First Winner in Rome

3rd-Rome, €13,200, Mdn., 6-2, 2yo, 1400m (AWT).
IL GRANDE GATSBY (IRE), (c, 2, Churchill {Ire}–Irene Watts {GB} {GSP-Ity, $133,610}, by Miswaki Tern), who ran second when unveiled over 1200 metres on the local synthetic on May 9, was the second choice on the board at 2-1 in this step up in trip. Noticeably warm in the preliminaries, he perched in fourth while glued to the fence through the opening furlongs. Shifted out on the bend, he was asked for his bid 400 metres from home and, began to make inroads toward the front. Unleashing a sparkling turn of foot, he dashed past all comers in the closing stages to win going away and defeat pacesetter Raimark (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}) by 1 ½ lengths. He is the first winner of 146 foals for his dual Guineas-winning first-season sire (by Galileo {Ire}) who stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for €30,000. One of seven foals, six to race, and the fifth winner out of his Italian Group 3-placed dam, Il Grande Gatsby is followed by a yearling filly by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire). His winning second dam was a half-sister to Italian Champion Older Mare Russian Lady (Ire) (Stanford {Ire}), who saluted three times at the group level in Italy.
