Surrender Now New Topper–Privately–of Keeneland’s Digital Sale

Keeneland’s December Digital Sale, held Tuesday, Dec. 15, reportedly has a new topper, but with a wrinkle attached–Surrender Now (Morning Line) was sold after the sale for an undisclosed price. Kim Lloyd, representative for the 5-year-old stakes-winning mare’s owner, Rockingham Ranch, said the buyer, Blue Heaven Farm, requested the final price remain private.

“We put her in for a reserve of $450,000,” said Lloyd. “They made an offer and we got a fair price for both sides, actually.”

Lloyd was asked to verify if the price topped the $250,000 brought by Felicita (More Than Ready) and he said, “Yes, quite a bit over that. It was an opportunity and a fair price for both parties. Gary [Hartunian of Rockingham] made it possible by being reasonable.”

Lloyd, the former general manager of Barretts Sales, is the principal of Sweetwater Trading Company, who manages the horses for Rockingham Ranch. Surrender Now, who won the 2017 Landaluce S. at Santa Anita and placed in two other black-type events, comes from a stakes-laden family as her fourth dam is Broodmare of the Year Glowing Tribute (Graustark).

“We had put her away, booked her to Speightstown,” said Lloyd. “Our original plan was to sell her [next] November, but we decided to take a chance. We stable our horses at Rose Hill Farm. Tony O’Campo [of Rose Hill] does such a wonderful job; he’s a good, caring horseman, so we had him be the consigner.

“We have quite a few horses,” he continued. “We’re into racing. We do breed, but we like to race and it was just an opportunity. The market was right. We’ve built a nice stable and this was a way to keep the cash flow going. We would have never sold our filly without the digital sale, but they came and make an offer and did a fair deal for both of us.

“It’s an interesting new process. Everybody gets a chance to market their horse and play in the game. It’s really something special. I think in the future we’ll see a lot more people utilizing the opportunity with digital sales. They have some wrinkles to work out and they will. We do as sellers too, like how to make our horse more marketable. I like that it is a learning process and new for everybody.”

Brody’s Cause Filly Graduates in Anoakia

Kalypso broke her maiden in stakes company with a front-running score in the Anoakia S. Sunday at Santa Anita. The chestnut filly strode out to the early lead and was in hand through a quarter in :22.17 and a half :45.14. Three lengths in front with furlong to run, Kalypso was never threatened and sailed under the wire 2 1/4 lengths in front to become the second black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Giant’s Causeway).

“When you ride for Bob [Baffert], he just says, ‘Break well and play the break,'” said winning rider Abel Cedillo. “I knew she had speed, so she broke really sharp and I just took that. She finished really strong and she galloped out really strong too. I think she did it pretty well.”

Kalypso was third behind subsequent GI Del Mar Debutante runner-up Forest Caraway (Bodemeister) and Debutante third-place finisher Illumination in her 5 1/2-furlong debut at Del Mar Aug. 15 and had to settle for second behind Queengol after setting the pace over that same track and distance Sept. 5.

“We’ve been wanting to run her long, but we couldn’t get a race to go,” Baffert said. “She got sick after Del Mar, so we took our time with her. She’s been training well and she’s changed a lot. We’ll stretch her out next time.”

Malibu Cove has a yearling filly by Hit it a Bomb who sold for $4,000 at last year’s Keeneland November sale. The mare, a full-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Prospective and to the dam of this year’s GIII Bashford Manor S. third-place finisher Herd Immunity (Union Rags), also has a weanling by Mor Spirit and she was bred back to Jimmy Creed. Spendthrift’s B. Wayne Hughes purchased the winner’s second dam, Spirited Away, for $290,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling in 2005. Two-Time Champion Sprinter Roy H Retired

Roy H (More Than Ready), champion sprinter of 2017 and 2018, has been retired at age eight, trainer Peter Miller said in a statement Thursday.

“It is with some sadness but also great joy that we announce the retirement of Roy H from racing,” Miller said. “What can you say about a horse like this who has given us so many thrilling moments? He is the embodiment of class and we will definitely miss seeing him compete. Fortunately, we will not have to miss him for long as he will be retired as a barn pony and remain a very important part of our team. He is a ‘favorite son’ among our staff and the feeling seems to be mutual as Roy H loves to be around the other horses and loves to train.”

Bought for $310,000 at the 2014 Keeneland April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Roy H campaigned for Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen. He picked up his first stakes win in the 2017 GII True North S. and followed with victories in the GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. and GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He repeated in both of those events in 2018 and last raced when capturing the GII Palos Verdes S. last January.

“He gave Rockingham Ranch and me a tremendous ride,” Miller added. “It was both an honor and a pleasure to train such a magnificent animal. He is sound and healthy and this seemed like the right time to make this change in his career. We’ve had him since he was a 2-year-old, so watching him grow and mature into a world champion has been a great gift.”

Roy H retires with a record of 23/10-5-2 and earnings of $3,139,765.

Trainer Peter Miller announced the retirement of two-time Sprint Champion Roy H on Thursday. The 8-year-old gelding won back-to-back editions of the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2017 and 2018, and retires with $3,139,765 in earnings while winning 10 of 23 starts, including nine of his last 12 races.
