Rock Of Gibraltar’s Big Rock Rallies For Prix La Force Triumph

Yeguada Centurion's 3-year-old colt Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}–Hardiyna {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}), who failed to nose ahead in each of his first three outings, graduated in a Feb. 2 handicap at Chantilly and repeated the dose back there in last month's Mar. 3 Listed Prix Maurice Caillault. Sent forward for a sterner test in Sunday's G3 Prix La Force at ParisLongchamp, he dented a host of lofty reputations with a game performance in the nine-furlong French Derby trial to register a career high. Big Rock was swiftly into stride from the inside stall and dictated proceedings on the front end for the most part. Scrubbed along when headed by 'TDN Rising Star' Padishakh (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) passing the quarter-mile marker, the 19-5 chance rallied gamely to reclaim control approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly in the latter stages to win going away by 2 1/2 lengths. Ballydoyle raider Greenland (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) ran on with gusto inside the final quarter-mile to finish a head adrift of Padishakh at the line.

“It was our intention to take advantage of his inside draw,” revealed trainer Christopher Head. “We knew his ability on the all-weather, but there was a question mark about the turf. We didn't want to complicate matters, so making the running was the sensible option and he handled everything with aplomb. He has that ability to set a lively pace and still find an extra gear, which is what you expect from a good horse. Evidently, the [June 4 G1] Prix du Jockey Club [at Chantilly] is the target, but he is not a horse to remain two months without a race. As long as he is well, he will have one more run before the French Derby. Which one has not yet been decided and we will discuss his programme with the owner.”

Pedigree Notes:

Big Rock is the first foal of two foals produced by an unraced daughter of G3 Silver Flash S. victrix and G1 Moyglare Stud S. third Harasiya (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), herself a half-sister to five black-type performers headed by G1 Derby and G1 Irish Derby-winning sire Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). The February-foaled dark bay, half to a 2-year-old colt by Ten Sovereigns (Ire), is from the family of last term's G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares victrix and G1 Oaks runner-up Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), MG1SW G1 Irish Derby hero Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares winner Seal Of Approval (GB) (Authorized {Ire}).

Rock of Gibraltar’s Rock Boy Wins Djebel Tussle

Team Calas' 3-year-old colt Rock Boy (Fr) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), unbeaten in juvenile starts over a mile at Vichy and nine furlongs at Marseille-Borely last year, maintained his perfect record in Thursday's G3 Prix Djebel at Deauville and went by all six rivals inside the final quarter mile for a career high in the seven-furlong 2000 Guineas trial. Patiently ridden and settled at the tail of the field through halfway, the 15-2 chance inched closer when encouraged forward passing the two pole and kept on strongly under a drive once delivering his challenge with 150 metres remaining to outpoint last month's Listed Prix Montenica victor Loubeisien (Fr) (Kheleyf) by a length.

Rock Boy is the third of four foals and one of two scorers out of a winning half-sister to G3 Prix Thomas Bryon Makaan (Swain {Ire}) and stakes-winning G3 Prix du Lys placegetter Almail (Swain {Ire}). The February-foaled bay is a half-brother to G2 Derby Italiano third Alastor (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) and an unraced 2-year-old colt by Recorder (GB). His second dam Khassah (GB) (Green Desert), herself a full-sister to Listed Prix Casimir Delamarre third Awaamir (GB), ran second in the G1 Fillies' Mile and is a granddaughter of GI Yellow Ribbon Invitational heroine Castilla (Bold Reason).

Rock of Gibraltar Filly Dominant In The Salsabil

Rated no better than a 33-1 shot prior to Sunday's Listed 10-furlong Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil S. at Navan, Catherine Kinane's Rocky Sky (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) turned that logic on its head with a scintillating display to score by 4 1/4 lengths and provide Ross O'Sullivan with a first black-type win in this sphere. Last seen finishing runner-up in the Listed Patton S. over a mile on Dundalk's Polytrack Mar. 5, the dark bay tanked her way to the front after the first two furlongs under Gary Halpin and was clear passing the half-mile marker. While rival jockeys must have been expecting her to come back, she had other ideas and continued her surge to the line to lead fellow 33-1 shot French Fusion (Ire) (Harzand {Ire}) and co a merry dance.

Halpin was also enjoying a first black-type win and said, “She's a grand filly. I knew coming here today that stepping up in trip and getting on to the grass she'd be very competitive. She'll come forward again from today. She's an exciting filly and it's very nice to ride a winner for Mr and Mrs Kinane and all the team at Castlefarm Stud. She has plenty of pace and I'd say a mile-and-a-quarter is okay for now, I wouldn't be in any rush to go a mile-and-a-half with her. She hasn't done anything wrong so far and the world is her oyster at the minute.”

The multiple listed-placed dam is a half to two others in that mould in Global City (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and Sweet Afton (Ire) (Mujadil). With a yearling full-brother to the winner to follow, she is a granddaughter of the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Lypharita (Fr) (Lightning {Fr}).
