Straightforward Return For Lord North In Winter Derby

Meydan's G1 Dubai Turf calls again for the now-veteran Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) as HH Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing's pride and joy marked his 2023 debut with a comfortable success in Saturday's G3 BetUK Winter Derby at Lingfield. Reported by jockey Robert Havlin to be further ahead than 12 months ago when he came up against the formidable presence of Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in this, the 8-11 favourite travelled with gusto anchored behind the early leaders. Taking time to wind up approaching the home straight, the Gosdens' flagbearer overpowered Tyrrhenian Sea (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) 150 yards out en route to an authoritative 3 1/4-length success.

Havlin said of the winner, who along with his 2021 Dubai Turf and 2022 dead-heat in the same race also boasts the 2020 G1 Prince of Wales's S. on his resume, “That was like clockwork. His work has been a lot brighter and I think that was a better performance than last year, even though today did not have the depth of last year's race. He was a bit laboured through the final furlong and a half here last year, whereas today I was always confident he was going to pick up. He is better on galloping tracks, coming off a strong pace, but his class shone through. He has been showing us a bit of that at home–it was as if he was back to being a four or five-year-old. Hopefully he can get back on song and win the Dubai Turf outright this year.”

Pedigree Notes
Lord North's pedigree is a decorated one, with his dam Najoum (Giant's Causeway) being a granddaughter of the GI Santa Anita Oaks heroine Hail Atlantis (Seattle Slew). Responsible for the sires Stormy Atlantic and Mr. Katowice, her stakes-placed daughter Divine Dixie (Dixieland Band) produced the GI Blue Grass S.-winning sire Bandini and is the second dam of the GI Ashland S. scorer Out For A Spin (Hard Spun). Also related to the GI Summer S. winner Decorated Invader (Declaration Of War) and that sire's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Fire At Will, Najoum has a 2-year-old filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) and a yearling full-brother to Lord North.

Newcastle's Monday card featured the It's Time To Turn To Talksport Novice S., a juvenile novices' heat annexed in 2020 by Godolphin's subsequent dual Group 1 winner Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), and this year's renewal has yielded another capable of striking at a higher level after Imad Al Sagar's 2-year-old colt Intinso (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Rose Of Miracles {GB}, by Dalakhani {Ire}), a homebred John and Thady Gosden trainee, powered to an impressive 3 1/4-length debut victory and a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette.

The well-backed 1-2 favourite settled under cover behind the leaders in third through sedate early fractions. Tanking forward when angled into the open approaching the quarter-mile marker, he quickened clear in taking fashion once shaken up for control entering the final furlong to easily outclass Alumnus (GB) (Kendargent {Ire}) by daylight.

Reach For The Moon Returns At Saint-Cloud

One-time Derby favourite Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) will return to action at Saint-Cloud on Saturday.

Connections of the John and Thady Gosden-trained colt opted to sidestep the Derby after he picked up a mid-season setback.

Instead, Reach For The Moon was aimed at Royal Ascot, where he was beaten as a 2-5 favourite behind Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) in the Hampton Court S.

Now owned by the King, he is back in action over a mile in Paris for the Group 3 Prix Perth, with Robert Havlin in the saddle.

The King's racing manager John Warren said, “We think the ground and trip should be just what we have been looking for. He needs to get back racing again and it's a shame we are nearly at the end of the season as John Gosden is very happy with him.

“We are hopeful of showing his best form, especially as his form with Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) looks very solid.”

Isa Salman and Abdulla Al Khalifa's homebred 2-year-old filly Commissioning (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Sovereign Parade {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) backed up a July 30 debut victory at Newmarket's July course with a taking score in last month's G2 Rockfel S. and stepped forward to provide rider Rab Havlin with a first Group 1 triumph in Friday's G1 bet365 Fillies' Mile back at the town's Rowley Mile venue. Commissioning, half to a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by a winning full-sister to G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger hero Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G3 Stanerra S.-winning G1 Irish Oaks and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares third Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Loughbrown S. victor Cypress Creek (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam Dialafara (Fr) (Anabaa), herself a half-sister to G3 Prix de Conde runner-up Diaghan (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), is a daughter of G2 Prix de Malleret and G3 Prix de la Nonette victrix and G1 Prix Vermeille runner-up Diamilina (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).
