Faiza Stays Perfect In Santa Ysabel

Michael Lund Peterson's Faiza (Girvin) kept her record perfect in tact–and gave her sire his second graded win of the weekend–with a stylish victory in the GIII Santa Ysabel S. at Santa Anita Sunday. Sent off the 4-5 favorite, the bay filly tracked pacesetting longshot Blessed Touch (Girvin) through moderate fractions of :24.00 and :48.32. She stuck a head in front into the far turn, but Blessed Touch, proving surprisingly determined, battled back and those two rivals turned for home together with And Tell Me Nolies (Arrogate) joining the fray with a three-wide move at the top of the lane. Blessed Touch finally gave way with a furlong to run and Faiza strode clear as And Tell Me Nolies never threatened the winner while coming home second best. In addition to his one-three in the Santa Ysabel, Girven was represented over the weekend by Dorth Vader, who captured the GII Davona Dale S. at Gulfstream Park Saturday.

“She was travelling well all the way around,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “I felt that the pace was quite easy, so I could get myself going around the turn and she stretched her legs down the lane really well.”

With the Santa Ysabel and Starlet victories, Faiza now has two victories at 1 1/16 miles.

“It seems like she is getting better, race after race,” Prat said. “I think the distance is not a problem for her. She's a filly that has stamina so there is definitely improvement.”

While trained by Bob Baffert, Faiza was ineligible to earn the Santa Ysabel's 50 qualifying points to the GI Kentucky Oaks, but race's second through fifth-place finishers received 20, 15, 10 and five points.

The second-highest priced offering at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale after selling to Peterson for $725,000, Faiza was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following her 3 1/2-length debut victory going six furlongs at Del Mar Nov. 12. She had a head in front of Pride of the Nile (Pioneerof the Nile) while winning the Dec. 10 GI Starlet S. and defeated that rival by a half-length to win the Jan. 28 GIII Las Virgenes S. last time out.

“She's got a great mind and she's by one of the hottest sires Girvin who is just unbelievable,” said Baffert. “We are just lucky and fortunate to have her. Michael Lund Petersen has been very excited about her. She wins but she is still learning how to win. Flavien told me that she wasn't going to win by a lot. She does just enough. All the jockeys that have ridden her have said that there's more in the tank and she gets it done. She's got a beautiful mind, nothing bothers her and she's sweet. She's got a great personality.”

Peterson's success buying out of the Midlantic May sale includes champion Gamine (Into Mischief), who he picked up for $1.8 million in Timonium in 2019.

Pedigree Notes:

From his first crop to race, Girvin now has three graded winners. In addition to Faiza and Dorth Vader, he was represented last year by GII Saratoga Special winner Damon's Mound. His daughter Atomically was third in the Feb. 4 GIII Forward Gal S.

Sweet Pistol, a daughter of multiple graded stakes winner Pomeroy's Pistol (Pomeroy) and half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile), has a 2-year-old filly by Cairo Prince–who sold to Bill Parcell's August Dawn Farm for $160,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale–and a yearling filly by Complexity. She was bred back to Complexity last year.

Pomeroy's Pistol, who sold not in foal for $475,000 at the 2020 Keeneland January sale, produced a colt by Authentic last year and was bred back to Curlin.

Wet Paint Provides Thrilling Finish To Honeybee

Since breaking her maiden two starts back over a sloppy track at Horseshoe Indy last fall and parlaying that into a win last time out in the Martha Washington S. over a wet-fast track at Oaklawn, Wet Paint (Blame) proved that her fondness for the off going was no fluke Saturday with a rousing win in the GIII Honeybee S.

The new leader on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks with the 50 points earned Saturday giving her a total of 70 points, the Godolphin homebred broke a beat slow from the middle of the gate and trailed the field as they passed by the wire for the first time. Paced up front by 21-1 shot Condensation (Frosted), Wet Paint stayed relaxed under an expert ride by Flavien Prat and stayed glued to the rail for the backstretch run as the opening quarter went in :23.54. Despite making up some ground past the half-mile pole, Wet Paint still found herself with only a pair of horses behind her as dueling longshots Condensation and Taxed (Collected) continued their slugfest.

Still stuck along the inside as the field swung around the far turn, the bay needed racing room and got it, tipping outside a tiring rival before ducking between horses with a sixteenth to run to finally find clear sailing. With plenty left from there, Wet Paint cruised the final yards to pick up the dominant win.

“Going into the first turn, I was little concerned. She was pretty far back and taking a lot of dirt,” said winning trainer Brad Cox. “She showed a lot of heart to be able to handle these conditions today. She showed she liked the wet track and I think as the distances get longer, she'll keep improving. The Kentucky Oaks is our goal and I think timing wise the Fantasy or the Ashland is the next logical goal.”

Pedigree Note:

Her dam's first winner, Wet Paint is from the same family as MGSW Piexlate (City Zip). She is the 21st graded-stakes winner for Claiborne Farm's Blame.

Connect’s The Alys Look Steals Silverbulletday S. Win

After romping by seven lengths to break her maiden at third asking over this same track and distance Dec. 1, The Alys Look checked in second behind 'TDN Rising Star' Pretty Mischievous in the Untapable S. Dec. 26. Going for her third straight effort at a mile and 70 yards Saturday, the Brad Cox trainee hung a length back outside of pacesetter Hayunevano through fractions of :24.37 and :48.08. As that leader began to fade past the quarter pole, The Alys Look got the first jump to take command as her stablemate, favored Chop Chop challenged from the outside. The pair dueled the length of the stretch with The Alys Look digging in gamely to repel her rival despite drifting out close to home to lead in a Brad Cox exacta. With the win, The Alys Look received 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Out of a half-sister to GSP Top of Mind (Curlin), The Alys Look has a 2-year-old half-sister by Mr. Speaker still to race behind her. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Occult Leaves No Doubt In Busanda

Picked up for $625,000 by Alpha Delta Stables LLC out of the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Occult missed out in fourth on her debut at Belmont's Aqueduct meeting Sept. 17 but returned at one mile to break her maiden in style by 4 1/4 lengths to finish her juvenile season Dec. 18. The 7-5 choice for her first try against stakes company, Occult had a sharp beginning but was outrun into the first turn by Sweetest Princess (Cairo Prince) to her outside. Patiently handled by jockey Dylan Davis in second, Occult settled nicely and held that position up the backstretch even as the field began to bunch up around her in pursuit of Sweetest Princess.  Asked for her run as she passed the quarter pole just outside of the leader, Occult drove by with over a furlong to run and was much the best late, winning geared down by a clear margin. The win gives the filly 20 points on the road to the Kentucky Oaks.

“She had a beautiful trip,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “I thought we were maybe the lone speed in race, and I talked to Dylan [Davis] this morning and thought we could come out of there and get the lead, but that other horse [No. 4, Sweetest Princess] showed so much interest and was adamant up there on the lead. I thought Dylan used great judgement to just secure that second stalking spot out in the clear. From there, it seemed like she was always traveling well and she had the jump on the other two main competition in the race right behind her. I was really pleased with the filly's effort and Dylan's heads-up ride.”
