Maclean’s Music’s Top of the Charts Lives Up to His Name With Rising Star Win

Top of the Charts (Maclean's Music) proved his impressive debut was no fluke with another good-looking score against winners at Churchill Downs Saturday. He wired a six-panel maiden special weight at this oval in his May 28 career bow, graduating by 2 3/4 lengths and earning an 87 Beyer Speed Figure. Gelded after that debut, the bay was the slight second choice at 9-5 ($1.90) behind another son of Maclean's Music named Favorite Outlaw ($1.80), who earned a whopping 95 Beyer Speed Figure for his second-out graduation at Oaklawn in January (click here for story).

The top two choices hustled right to the front and, when Favorite Outlaw insisted on leading the way, Top of the Charts settled right on his heels through a :22.87 opening quarter. The gelding turned up the heat on the pacesetter through a :45.96 half-mile and the two turned for home on even terms. Top of the Charts kicked it into high gear at the top of the lane, bounding clear for a four-length score.

Top of the Charts is the third 'TDN Rising Star' for his sire Maclean's Music. The winner's dam Tiz Ro is a half to two-time Grade I winner Jambalaya (Langfuhr) and SW Riley Ripasso (Johannesburg). The 12-year-old mare is also responsible for the juvenile colt Canboulay (Honor Code) and a yearling filly named Destiny Ro (Lookin At Lucky).

New Rising Star at Santa Anita for Quality Road

Baoma Corp.'s Ganadora (Quality Road), installed the 6-5 choice in this first go, slugged it out early with So It Would Seem (Honor Code), but was peerless in the stretch, running away to win by an impressive 6 1/2-length margin over 2-1 second choice Lady T (Into Mischief). Mixing it up through a sharp opening pace in :21.58 and :44.74, the $1-million KEESEP buy kicked clear turning for home and proved much the best late to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors. So It Would Seem faded to second last. Ganadora is the 11th 'Rising Star' for her sire Quality Road and the fifth for that stallion hailing from the Bob Baffert barn. Three of the previous four Baffert-trained Quality Road 'Rising Stars', Corniche, Roadster and Klimt, have gone on to be Grade I winners.

The filly is out of Grade III-placed Beloveda (Ghostzapper), who began her racing career in Poland before being imported to the States. Gainesway originally secured the mare in partnership with Michael Hernon for $205,000 at the 2013 FTKFEB sale. Her 2016 Scat Daddy filly, SP Mistress of Love, summoned $1-million at KEESEP and her 2018 filly Hana Road (Quality Road) was a $450,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad before Ganadora gave the mare her second seven-figure sale. Gainesway bought out Hernon at the 2021 FTKFEB sale, where the mare hammered for $510,000. Beloveda is also responsible for a juvenile filly by Empire Maker and a yearling filly by Street Sense. She was bred back to Nyquist.

Bombdiggity Becomes 30th Rising Star for Into Mischief

Stonestreet Stables' Bombdiggity became the 30th 'TDN Rising Stars' for her super sire Into Mischief with an impressive score at Fair Grounds. Bumped at the start of her unveiling at Churchill Downs Nov. 6, the $600,000 KEESEP purchase faded to be sixth after setting the early pace. Receiving Lasix for the first time in this sophomore bow, Bombdiggity broke much better this time around, jumping up to take immediate control. Coasting through a :22.66 first quarter, the bay was well within herself as she turned for home in front after a half in :46.28. Opening up with ease in the lane, Bombdiggity sailed home to a dominant 6 3/4-length graduation. Ride the Plan (Candy Ride {Arg}) filled the place spot.

The winner is a half to 'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper (Speightstown), GSW, $345,595. Their stakes-placed dam Checkupfromzneckup summoned $825,000 from WinStar at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. She aborted her first foal, making Carribean Caper her first live produce, followed by Bombdiggity. Her 2020 filly, now named Dixie Tap (Tapit), brought $990,000 from West Point, Scarlet Oak Racing and NBS Stable at last term's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. The 11-year-old mare had a Quality Road colt Apr. 27 of last year and is back in foal to that stallion

Kitten’s Joy Filly Catapults to Rising Stardom

Marc Detampel's New Year's Eve (Kitten's Joy) was overlooked at 11-1 in this career bow, but that won't happen in her next start after a good-looking graduation at Fair Grounds Friday. Squeezed out by her neighbors at the start, the chestnut raced near the back of the pack through opening splits of :24.41 and :50.24. Swung out to the center of the course in the stretch, New Year's Eve unleashed a furious late rally, sling-shotting past her competition to win going away by 1 1/2 lengths. Missoni (Flintshire {GB}) filled the place spot.

Awesome Rafaela also has a yearling colt named Will Take Cash (Will Take Charge). She visited Volatile earlier this year. The winner's second dam is Brazilian Group 1 winner Linda Rafaela (Brz) (Bin Ajwaad {Ire}), who also produced G1 Brazilian Oaks winner Viva Rafaela (Brz) (Know Heights {Ire}).
