‘TDN Rising Star’ Impel Impresses At Oaklawn To Stay Perfect

4th-Oaklawn, $140,000, Alw (NW1$X)/Opt. Clm ($125,000), 3-3, 3yo, f, 1 1/16m, 1:45.10, ft, 8 1/2 lengths.
IMPEL (f, 3, Quality Road–Your Love {SW & GSP, $335,000}, by Flatter) earned 'TDN Rising Star' honors with a dazzling debut win over a fast six furlongs at Fair Grounds Jan. 1. Entered as an also-eligible for last Friday's Cincinnati Trophy S. at Turfway, the Juddmonte homebred showed up in this spot as the 6-5 favorite instead and made the most of the swap. Always right off the hip of pacesetter Hayek (Cairo Prince), Impel was well in-hand turning for home and drew off with ease against an over-matched field to win by a geared-down 8 1/2 lengths. Another flashy debut winner, Merasol Sugar (Consitution), picked up the pieces in second. Juddmonte purchased stakes winner Your Love, a full-sister to GSW/GISP Economic Model and half to GSW/GISP Happy American (Runhappy) and GSW/MGISP Well Monied (Maria's Mon), for $480,000 out of the 2019 KEENOV sale and Impel is the dam's first foal. After losing her 2022 War Front foal, Your Love reported a filly by Curlin last year and was bred back to Not This Time for 2024. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $115,200. Uncle Mo Colt Gets Rising Star Nod at Fair Grounds

In a field including six first-time starters, Squire Creek (Uncle Mo) proved much the best, scampering home a six-length winner over the well-related 4-5 choice Wicked Again (Gun Runner) in the six-furlong contest at Fair Grounds Thursday. Off the blocks alertly, the 5-2 second choice vied for the early lead with the well-related Wicked Again through opening fractions of :21.65 and :44.92. Head-to-head with that rival turning for home, the $525,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate edged ahead in early stretch and blasted clear late en route to an easy victory.

A half-sister to MGSW & GISP Commissioner (A.P. Indy) and GSW & GISP Laugh Track (Distorted Humor), Covenant is also a half to Mythical Bride (Street Cry {Ire}), the dam of champion older horse and GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso (Curlin). The 9-year-old mare was barren in 2021 but foaled a Constitution colt the following season and was bred back to Curlin.

Tapit Trice Earns ‘Rising Star’ Nod At Gulfstream

Unveiled at Aqueduct Nov. 6, Tapit Trice (Tapit) endured a wide trip throughout and was coming on late but had to settle for third just 2 1/2 lengths off the winner. It would be the only time so far that the grey son of Tapit did not find the winner's circle as he rebounded with a narrow victory over a muddy but sealed track Dec. 17 before flying south to Gulfstream to earn his 'TDN Rising Star' nod with an eight-length romp Saturday.

Racing with Lasix for the first time, the $1,300,000 Keeneland September yearling got away evenly from the inside gate but was outsprinted early and switched outside by jockey Luis Saez to race in the clear up the backstretch. Fourth in a tightly-bunched field, the grey held his ground behind a pair of dueling leaders up front, staying wide out on the track as the opening quarter went in :24.25. Up into third by the time the leaders began to swing around the far turn, Tapit Trice surged forward under a hand ride past the quarter pole to join his stablemate, the 4-5 favorite Shesterkin (Violence), for the lead. The pair matched strides for only a few yards before Tapit Trice went on with it into the final furlong, running up the score late for the clear victory as the 6-5 second choice.

The 51st 'Rising Star' for prolific sire Tapit, Tapit Trice is out of a graded-stakes placed half-sister to MGISW Jaywalk (Cross Traffic). Danzatrice returned to Tapit twice more since producing Tapit Trice, producing back-to-back full-sisters in 2021 and 2022 with the 2-year-old being a $1,100,000 purchase by Whisper Hill Farm at last year's Keeneland September Sale. Danzatrice is due back to Tapit for yet another full-sibling in 2023.

Gun Runner Filly a ‘Rising Star’ at Gulfstream

Bandita (f, 3, Gun Runner–Tricky One, by Unbridled's Song), coming off her first set of works for now-eight-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, cemented her status as a 'TDN Rising Star' at Gulfstream Park on Sunday afternoon. The bay filly, backed down to even-money favoritism, did not disappoint her connections or the bettors in what was a sparkling debut.

Breaking alertly, the Bass Stables colorbearer set the tone early by controlling the pace up front. Despite being challenged by Arrow Bolt (Arrogate) just before the far turn, the $350,000 KEESEP purchase moved professionally, and at the eighth pole poured it on by showcasing a new set of gears as the rest of the field faded into the background. Bandita hit the wire 8 3/4-lengths ahead of 7-2 shot Ocean Club (Curlin) who was second.

Tricky One, who was purchased by International Equities Holdings for $275,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale, is a half-sister to MSW Optionality (Gun Runner) and SW Simple Surprise (Cowboy Cal), whose millionaire son GISW Gunite (Gunite) won Saturday's King Cotton S. at Oaklawn and could be Dubai-bound. The first runner to win at the races for her dam has an unnamed 2-year-old half-sister by Flatter and her mare visited Practical Joke last year. Bandita is the sixth 'TDN Rising Star' for last year's leading sophomore sire.
