Mehmas’s Persian Force To The Fore At Newmarket

Amo Racing's €225,000 Goffs Orby yearling Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}–Vida Amorosa {Ire}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}) ran second to 'TDN Rising Star' Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) in Royal Ascot's G2 Coventry S. last month and, in the absence of late scratching Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never), justified odds-on favouritism to claim a first stakes success in Thursday's G2 Close Brothers July S. at Newmarket. He had previously debuted with a win in a stellar renewal of Doncaster's Mar. 26 Brocklesby S. and doubled up in a May 14 Newbury conditions heat. Positioned in a handy third through halfway in this six-furlong test, the crowd's 1-2 pick was sent to the front underneath the stands' side rail passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly under continued urging up the hill to comfortably outpoint Show Respect (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) by 1 1/2 lengths for a career high. In so doing, he emulated his sire (by Acclamation {GB}), who ran second in the Coventry before landing this contest in 2016.

“I'm delighted that Rossa [Ryan] put the race to bed when he needed to and we deserved that,” said Richard Hannon after claiming a fourth edition of the contest. “He's done exactly the same as [sire] Mehmas in finishing second in the Coventry and then winning the July. I do think he will get seven furlongs. We don't have to go there immediately, but at the end of the year he will. His temperament is exemplary and he behaves as very good 2-year-olds do and I'm sure a step up would benefit. We might look at the [G1 Vincent O'Brien] National S. in Ireland and the [G1] Prix Morny next. My dad rang me after the Coventry and said he's a Guineas horse and I thought that was a little bit out of the blue, but that was the first thing he said to me. If a horse has a lot of speed he doesn't want to do that, but because he's so sensible he gives himself every chance of getting that [one-mile] trip. He has always given me a tingle, he got his just rewards today and I'm sure he's a Group 1 winner waiting to happen. He's an ideal horse to make a sire, he's a gorgeous looker and has everything that good horses do have. This fellow is probably one of the best 2-year-olds we've had in a long time.”

“It's brilliant for Mr Hannon and all the team because we were unlucky at Ascot and we got repayment for the horse here,” added Rossa Ryan. “Going forward, we have our black-type race under our belts now and a lot of the pressure is off, so it's a job well done. He's so straightforward and is a relaxed character, he takes you through the race and fills you with confidence. It was probably the smoothest run I've got in a Group race for a long time and it all fell into place today. A lot of credit has to go to the lads at home, I do the easy job and they put in all the hard work, so I couldn't be more grateful to the team. Richard is a master of 2-year-olds and, when this lad was building up to Royal Ascot, there was talk that he was as good as Canford Cliffs, so I was getting excited. It's great to have a horse with a proper engine underneath like he does and it's a good feeling.”

Runner-up Show Respect bounced back after running 11th in the Coventry to finish second at odds of 33-1 and trainer Brian Meehan reflected, “That is much of what we expected to happen in the Coventry. He got stopped in the gate at [Royal] Ascot and in these sort of races you need a clean break. He has been able to show today what I always thought of and what James Doyle thought of him at Leicester. He is in the [G2] Gimcrack [at York], the [G2] Richmond [at Goodwood] is there, and there is also the [G1] Prix Morny [at Deauville]. I'm really pleased and all these races will be on his radar now.”

Persian Force, from the family of dual Group 1-winning sire Danehill Dancer (Ire), is the second foal and stakes performer produced by an unraced half-sister to the dam of G3 Prix de Meautry victor Garrus (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}). The April-foaled chestnut if a full-brother to last term's G2 Richmond S. third Gubbass (Ire) and half to a yearling colt by Inns Of Court (Ire).

Freshman Sire Expert Eye Off The Mark At Leicester

Banstead Manor Stud's first-crop sire Expert Eye (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) notched his first winner when the Ralph Beckett-trained debutant Sunny Orange (Ire) raced to an ultimately snug victory in Saturday's Madri Excepcional Maiden S. over five furlongs at Leicester. Juddmonte's 70,000gns Tattersalls December Foals acquisition went postward as the well-backed 2-1 second choice for the straight dash and was well away from an outer gate to track the leaders in fifth through the initial fractions. Making smooth headway from halfway, he was ridden to launch his challenge approaching the final furlong and driven out in the latter stages to defeat Al Khazneh (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) by 1 1/4 lengths.

Mehmas Colt Tops Final Goffs Foal Session

KILDARE, Ireland–The fourth and final day of the Goffs Foal Sale saw prices return to a more affordable level for the average working man or woman, and while there were no dizzying highs there was a decent level of trade for those present. With an extra day of foals compared to last year, Thursday was always going to test the resilience of the market and not surprisingly the clearance rate dropped a couple of points from the day before to 79% while the session topper, a Mehmas (Ire) colt, fetched €70,000.

Taken as a whole, the Goffs November Foal Sale returned a solid set of results with €25,560,300 worth of foals sold over the four days at an average of €34,966 and a median of €22,000. The overall clearance rate came in at a very respectable 82%. Last year's three-day foal sale saw 482 of 637 offered (75.6%) change hands for €17,578,600. The average was €36,470, and the median 20,000.

Speaking after the sale, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “What an amazing business. As we progress through this depressing pandemic it is so uplifting to be involved in an industry that is always looking forward with positivity. And there is no better example of planning for the future than buying foals so, once again, we salute all the mighty foal pinhookers who have driven a trade of strength, depth and vibrancy over the last four days as they look for the next touch. The strong home team have been joined by a multitude of English and overseas speculators along with several end users, and the result has been intense competition and often frenzied bidding especially for those that stood out. Of course they have flocked to Goffs as our vendors have provided us with the cream of the Irish foal crop and we thank every one of them for their ongoing support of the Irish National Foal Sale. As ever our mantra is proven-'we can't do it without you'–and it is only with such a strong catalogue that we can deliver the kind of sustained demand that has clearly been in evidence from Lot 1 right through to the close of business today.”

He continued, “The top of the market proved robust with the new star Frankel leading the way for the second year in succession but bidding has been as keen on each day and at all levels to vindicate so many Irish breeders' choice of Goffs for their best. Indeed, a clearance rate of 82%, up from 76% despite a far bigger catalogue, makes the point and we are so pleased to have received so much positive feedback from so many about so much. We now turn our attention to our two day Breeding Stock catalogue, which reads better than for many a year following yet more wonderful support from breeders.”

Mehmas Magic Continues

Breeders who have supported Mehmas (Ire) since his retirement to Tally-Ho Stud have by and large been well rewarded, especially considering his 2020 covering fee was just €7,500, and lot 813 provided his breeder Golden Vale Stud with a great return when selling to Tally-Ho Stud for €70,000. The colt, consigned by Meadagh Stud, is a half-brother to five winners out of Ishimagic (GB) (Ishiguru) who is a half-sister to the U.S. multiple graded stakes winner Foxysox (GB) (Foxhound). Another son of Mehmas that proved popular was lot 947 from the McEnery's Vinesgrove Stud that sold to Paula Flannery for €56,000. The colt, bred by Billy & Paul McEnery, is out of Zambezi Queen (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}), who was bought by Billy four years ago for 16,000gns.

In what has been a fairly hectic week for the Tally-Ho team between purchasing, selling and monitoring the progeny of their stallions, the O'Callaghans also added a filly on Thursday by their own young stallion Kessaar (Ire) to the team. Lot 931 cost €44,000 and is a granddaughter of the G3 Dance Design S. winner Obama Rule (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and the dam, Trump Alexander (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), is a half-sister to this year's G2 Kilboy Estate S. winner Insinuendo (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}).

Derek Veitch's Ringfort Stud offered a Churchill (Ire) colt on behalf of breeder Rory O'Brien and lot 846 was snapped up by John Cullinan and Roger Marley for €68,000. The colt is out of the dual winner Mistime (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) who was bought by O'Brien for 32,000gns three years ago and is proving a sound investment.

While many of these foals are bought as pinhook investments, many are offered as a result of a recent mare investment such as the above lot and another that reaped a very good return for a shrewd breeder was lot 960 from Ardrums Stud. The farm bought the dual winner Amber Spark (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}), a half-sister to stakes winner Ventura Diamond (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), two years ago for only 16,000 gns and sent her to Dandy Man (Ire) soon after for her first cover at an advertised fee of €15,000. The resulting colt went the way of Whiteoaks for €52,000 on Thursday.

As the session continued, Tom Monaghan gave €41,000 for a son of New Bay (GB) from Albany Stud, lot 899, a half-brother to this year's winning Kevin Ryan-trained juvenile Lady Raeburn (Ire) (Mehmas {GB}). Fifteen minutes later, Mark McStay gave €40,000 for lot 904, a son of Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) from Derrymore Farm. Michael Fitzpatrick of JC Bloodstock will be hoping his early purchase of lot 805, a colt by Profitable (Ire), will prove just that when he no doubt returns to a sale ring next year. The colt out of the unraced Iffa Red (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) cost Fitzpatrick €36,000 and was offered by Skara Stud.

Paul and Marie McCartan have honed their craft in both breeding and unearthing future stars, and their Ballyphilip Stud took home a son of US Navy Flag for €32,000. Lot 783 is the second produce out of the unraced Fascinated (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) from the family of G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Saffron Walden (Fr).

The focus switches to breeding stock on Friday with a 10 a.m. start featuring exciting and sizeable drafts from several global breeding operations in addition to the dam of a triple Group 1 winner.

Dark Angel’s Indie Angel Springs A Surprise In the Duke of Cambridge

In hindsight, a starting price of 22-1 on a Cheveley Park Stud-owned filly trained by the Gosdens and ridden by Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot was bordering on the ludicrous and despite her form deficiencies Indie Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) stepped up to make a mockery of those odds in Wednesday's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. Since Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) exited the stall closest to the stand's side in the meeting's opening G1 Queen Anne S. the day before, all bar one of the races staged on the straight track had fallen to horses also drawn highest with the other winner only three off that fence. Whether there is a genuine bias near the stand's rail remains to be seen, but Indie Angel likes her space and so exiting from stall 12 of 12 was a real benefit here. Freshened up since finishing fourth behind Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the nine-furlong G2 Dahlia S. at Newmarket May 2, the winner whose portfolio boasted just a listed win in the Fleur de Lys Fillies' S. over a mile on Lingfield's Polytrack in October was steadied in rear early. Allowed to coast into contention approaching two out, the grey was in front soon after and able to dominate the closing stages to score by 2 1/2 lengths. Lady Bowthorpe, who came up the centre along with the 11-4 favourite Queen Power (Ire) (Shamardal), won the tussle for the bridesmaid's role by a short head but was always fighting a losing battle overall. “I'll be honest with you, that was unexpected,” Dettori said after his 75th Royal winner. “She's got ability, but everything has to fall right for her. She needs cover, a fast pace and plenty of room. She was too free with me at Newmarket last time, so I didn't know what to expect but today was a good day and she just took off.”

Initially restricted to handicaps over seven furlongs and a mile last term, Indie Angel garnered a brace of wins at Newmarket in July and at Salisbury the following month before being tried in Sandown's G3 Atalanta S. in late August. Eighth there, she was disappointing with no obvious excuses when subsequently seventh in a competitive course-and-distance handicap in September. By the time she tackled the Fleur de Lys, connections had found the key to her and with Frankie keeping her separate from the rest and looping the field she was able to gain a breakthrough black-type success. Penned against the rail for most of her return to the Polytrack for that venue's seven-furlong All-Weather Fillies' and Mares' Championships Conditions S. Apr. 2, she flopped when fifth as the 4-5 favourite there and despite being kept isolated in the Dahlia was still a soundly-beaten 3 1/4-lengths fourth.

While it is easy to see why the punters had given up on her, she was able to make a step forward as older fillies from this yard can do in what amounted to a perfect storm of draw, ground, pace and the fact that both Lady Bowthorpe and the Dahlia runner-up Queen Power were racing under penalties. Solid yardstick Lavender's Blue (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who had beaten her by 2 3/4 lengths when third in the Dahlia, was four lengths behind her in this and the way she tracked and brushed aside Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) suggests it would be naive to put this down to mere track bias. She was the second of three winners for her sire in two days at the meeting, sandwiched in between Berkshire Shadow (GB) and Real World (GB), as the Dark Angel success story gathers further momentum.

Gosden, who won this 12 months ago with Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), commented, “In fairness, she won very well last backend but it went a little wrong and I probably ran her before she had come to herself in the spring. She had a little complication in her last race, but we knew she could be competitive with the top fillies. To say that she'd win by two-and-a-half lengths would have been wishful thinking, but she relaxed beautifully and she's bloomed. She looked a different filly today than when we last ran her back in May.”

Looking ahead, the senior member of the Clarehaven partnership added, “She's now won a group two, so maybe you start trying to climb even higher up the ladder. We won it last year and there are nice races like the [G1] Sun Chariot and the nice fillies' race [the G1 Falmouth S.] at the July meeting for her, so those are possibilities. Right now, we're savouring this moment.”

Lady Bowthorpe's trainer William Jarvis was inclined to blame the fast surface for her eclipse. “All credit to the winner, who was very impressive, but I feel easier ground would have suited us better,” he said of the runner-up. “When a filly is running as well as she is, my inclination is not to give her a break. She's in the [July 9] Falmouth, but ideally I would love her to try at a mile and a quarter on decent ground in the [July 29 G1] Nassau [at Goodwood], with the [G1] Sun Chariot a possibility longer term.” Sir Michael Stoute said of Queen Power, “She's a model of consistency, that's for sure, and I guess the trip was a little short of her best.”

Indie Angel, who was a 600,000gns purchase at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, is out of the Listed Silver S. winner and G3 Prix d'Aumale third Indigo Lady (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), who is kin to the Listed Rockingham S. winner Prism (GB) (Spectrum {Ire}). The third dam Simply Gorgeous (GB) (Hello Gorgeous) is also the ancestress of the G1 Premio Roma hero Imperial Dancer (GB) (Primo Dominie {GB}) and the G3 Blue Wind S. winner and G1 Nassau S. runner-up One Voice (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}), as well as being a half-sister to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Give Thanks (GB) (Relko {GB}) whose own descendants are headed by the G1 1000 Guineas winner Harayir (Gulch). Also hailing from the family of the G1 Epsom Derby hero and sire Teenoso (Youth), Indigo Lady has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Churchill (Ire) named Miss Clementine (Ire) who was bought by BBA Ireland and Ed Dunlop Racing for 90,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.
