Don’t Leave Me Tops Pin Oak Dispersal At Fasig-Tipton

Nearly 70 years of careful breeding and racing success – a lifelong passion of Pin Oak Stud's Ms. Josephine Abercrombie – were on display Sunday evening at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky. A selection of Pin Oak's remaining broodmares, weanlings, and race fillies were offered without reserve by Denali Stud as agent.

The sale topper came in the form of Don't Leave Me (Hip 18), a 9-year-old graded stakes winning daughter of Lemon Drop Kid. Woodford Thoroughbreds purchased the mare, who was offered in foal to Horse of the Year Authentic, for $650,000 (video).

Don't Leave Me is out of Grade 1 winner See How She Runs, and has produced two foals to date, including I'm So Sorry (Uncle Mo), who is placed in one start this year at two, and a weanling filly by Medaglia d'Oro (Hip 19). The latter preceded her dam into the ring, and was purchased by Rigney Racing for $370,000, the top price paid for a weanling during the sale (video).

“We started showing Saturday morning,” said Denali Stud's Craig Bandoroff. “They were here at quarter to eight, and her 23 horses showed 1,056 times… [w]e were hoping that the community would appreciate the quality of the offerings and the quality of Ms. Abercrombie and Clifford's lifetime work, and they did. It was gratifying.”

Point System (Hip 5), a seven-year-old stakes winner by Pin Oak's own Broken Vow, sold for $420,000 to Shepherd Equine Advisors, agent from Larry Hirsch (video).

The second highest price of the evening, Point System was offered in foal to Eclipse champion Improbable. To date, Point System is represented by a yearling colt by Candy Ride (ARG).

Late in the session, Eaton Sales took home multiple Grade 1 placed stakes winner Gold Medal Dancer (Hip 23) for $400,000 (video). The 11-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro is represented by Dance Recital, a winner this year at 4, as well as an unstarted 2-year-old in Dance Routine, and a weanling colt by Candy Ride (ARG).

“This has been her baby for 60-plus years,” added longtime Pin Oak Stud farm manager Clifford Barry of Abercrombie. “It's kind of nice to coming in tonight and showcase… [T]here are mares here today she's got three, four generations of. Very, very proud of her.”

Of three racing and/or broodmare prospects on offer, Fascination (Hip 20) took the top spot, selling for $185,000 to Harbut Bloodstock. A daughter of two-time and current leading sire Into Mischief, Fascination placed third in her debut this year at three. Her dam, Whimiscality (Hip 10), in foal to Collected, sold earlier in the session to BBA Ireland for $200,000.

All told, 23 horses sold for $3,999,000, good for an average of $173,870 and a median of $130,000.

Brown Trainees Headline Riskaverse At Saratoga

Trainer Chad Brown will send out three fillies against an evenly matched field built for Thursday's 12th running of the $120,000 Riskaverse, a one-mile event over the Saratoga Race Course inner turf for sophomore fillies who have not won a stakes at one mile or over. Saratoga Race Course is located in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The Riskaverse pays homage to Fox Ridge Farm's multiple Grade 1-winning mare, trained by Patrick Kelly, who became the first horse to score back-to-back triumphs in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl [2004-05]. The talented daughter of prominent turf stallion Dynaformer retired with earnings in excess of $2 million and a significant resume which also included triumphs in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., and the Grade 2 Sands Point at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., both in 2002.

Brown captured the Riskaverse with subsequent Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Dayatthespa [2012] and Catch a Bid [2019].

Peter Brant's Rastafara will look to defeat winners for the first time. After two on-the-board efforts, the daughter of Shamardal graduated at third asking against impressive next-out winner Baby Blythe on July 24 going the Riskaverse distance over Saratoga's inner turf.

“She ran really well and finally broke though and got her maiden broken last time,” Brown said. “We've always thought a lot of her. She'll have to step it up again but it seems like the right spot for her.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. will seek a fourth Riskaverse conquest when piloting Rastafara from post 7.

Minaun and Amy C will attempt to make amends after finishing a respective fifth and sixth in the Grade 3 Lake George on July 23 at the Spa, which was won by the Brown-trained Technical Analysis.

Owned by Bradley Thoroughbreds, Iris Smith Stable, and Rigney Racing, Minaun was four lengths back in upper stretch racing three-wide, but finished 3 ½ lengths behind the winner last out. A winner of the Group 3 Marble Hill last July at The Curragh, the Irish-bred daughter of Zoffany won her first start for Brown off a nine-month respite going one mile over the Widener turf course at Belmont Park on April 30 ahead of a close second in the Wild Applause on June 26 at Belmont.

Jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. picks up the mount from post 11.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Robert V. LaPenta's Amy C, a British-bred daughter of Charming Thought, won her North American debut on June 25 at Belmont Park before finishing sixth as the second choice in the Grade 3 Lake George.

Jockey Manny Franco will ride from post 9.

Chiefswood Stables' Third Draft makes her stakes debut off a sharp triumph in an allowance optional claiming tilt over the inner turf for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.

The gray or roan daughter of multiple champion-producing sire Curlin, out of Ontario-bred stakes-winning Malibu Moon mare Original Script, defeated a group of winners last out that included graded stakes placed Magisterium and Amalfi Princess. She trailed the eight-horse field down the backstretch and made a sweeping wide move in upper stretch to get her nose on the wire in the final jumps.

After finishing behind subsequent stakes winners Technical Analysis and Munnyfor Ro at maiden level, fifth time was the charm for Third Draft in a 1 1/16-mile maiden event on May 8 over the Widener turf at Belmont Park.

“She's been pretty consistent, and I've liked her races,” said McGaughey, who won the 2016 Riskaverse with On Leave. “Her last two have been really good and I'm looking forward to running her in the Riskaverse. She wants to run farther than a mile, so hopefully this can set her up for something later on.”

Jockey Jose Ortiz retains the mount from post 4.

[Story Continues Below]

Hoolie Racing Stable and Madaket Stable's Hit the Woah will try to regain winning form for trainer Christophe Clement. The black type earning daughter of Vancouver was a 1 ¼-length winner of an off-the-turf maiden tilt on November 13 at Aqueduct, where she defeated next-out winners Amalfi Princess and Into Vanishing.

Although winless in two starts on grass, Hit the Woah made good showings both times when third in the Sanibel Island on March 27 at Gulfstream Park and seventh beaten 1 ¾ lengths to stablemate Bye Bye in the Grade 3 Soaring Softly on May 15 at Belmont.

She enters from an off-the-board effort in a main-track allowance at Parx in Bensalem, Penn., on June 30.

“She's in very good form and training forwardly,” Clement said. “Last time, we tried the dirt and that didn't work. At the moment this is the right spot for her.”

Jockey Joel Rosario will ride from post 8.

Trainer Brendan Walsh will send out Keeper of Time for her North American debut. The Bradley Thoroughbreds-owned daughter of Mehmas was a last out 80-1 upset winner of the Group 3 1000 Guineas Trial on April 11 at Leopardstown.

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione will ride Keeper of Time from post 2.

Completing the field are Magisterium [post 1, Dylan Davis], Stand By You [post 3, Javier Castellano], Triple Digit [post 5, Jose Lezcano], Designer Ready [post 6, Junior Alvarado] and Love and Money [post 10, Luis Saez].

The Riskaverse is carded as Race 9 on Thursday's 10-race program. First post is 1:05 p.m. Saratoga Live will present daily television coverage of the summer meet on FOX Sports. ‘Matured’ Sylvia Q Could Give Trainer Phil Bauer An Early Birthday Present In Oaklawn’s Fantasy

Trainer Phil Bauer has a chance for an early birthday present when he sends out two horses Saturday at Oaklawn, notably Sylvia Q in the $600,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles.

Bauer turns 36 April 14 and the Fantasy would represent his most lucrative career victory since starting his first horse in 2013.

“I wouldn't mind it,” Bauer said Thursday morning.

Sylvia Q is among seven horses entered in the Fantasy, Oaklawn's final major prep for the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) April 30 at Churchill Downs. The Fantasy will offer 170 points (100-40-20-10, respectively) toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Oaks, the country's biggest prize for 3-year-old fillies. Swiss Skydiver, last year's Fantasy winner, finished third in the rescheduled Kentucky Oaks (COVID-19) behind Honeybee Stakes (G3) winner Shedaresthedevil en route to an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 3-year-old filly for trainer Kenny McPeek, Bauer's former boss.

“Purse-wise and just the significance of the race moving forward, to have a shot at the Oaks or even the Black-Eyed Susan, is something we're excited about,” Bauer said.

Sylvia Q returns to stakes company after coming from just off the pace to capture an entry-level allowance race by three lengths March 11 at Oaklawn under Martin Garcia, who is named to ride Saturday. Sylvia Q was exiting the only poor performance of her five-race career, a fourth-place finish, beaten 12 ½ lengths by local division leader Will's Secret, in the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes Jan. 30. The 1-mile race marked the stakes debut of Sylvia Q, an $80,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate.

“We took a swing at the Martha Washington,” Bauer said. “Her first couple of races, looked like she was wanting to hang. I messed up and put the blinkers on her and it just kind of backfired on us. Just got a little too rank early and didn't have enough at the finish. Took those off and worked to try and get her to relax. Martin gets along with her really well and did a good job in the morning doing it, and she ran to the way she was training. Hopefully, takes another step forward here. Three-year-old filly without an (allowance other-than condition), you're kind of forced to run in stakes until sometime in May. She deserves a shot here.”

Sylvia Q, 5-1 on the morning line, is campaigned by Richard and Tammala Rigney (Rigney Racing LLC). Bauer trains privately for the Rigneys, who reside in Louisville, Ky., and named Sylvia Q, a daughter of Violence, after a “friend of the family,” the trainer said.

“They usually name their horses after people that are close to them, kids, trips they've taken and drinks, stuff like that,” Bauer said.

Overall, Sylvia Q has a 2-2-0 record and earnings of $136,524.

Bauer and Rigney Racing began building their stable by claiming Cookie for $30,000 out of an August 16, 2013, maiden victory at Ellis Park. Cookie – their first starter – became their first winner Sept. 21, 2013, at Churchill Downs.

Bauer and Rigney have since teamed to win the $300,000 Jaipur Invitational (G3) in 2015 at Belmont Park with Channel Marker and the $100,000 Hutchinson Stakes (G3) in 2018 at Gulfstream Park with Madison's Luna. Channel Marker was a $62,500 claim in 2014 at Churchill Downs.

“Very fortunate,” Bauer said.

Tactically, Sylvia Q has been a forward factor throughout her career (all five races have been routes).

“Our filly just has tremendous gate speed,” Bauer said. “She's never been sent, but she's just inherited the lead because she leaves there so well. Maybe the perfect scenario is a horse that wants to go and have a repeat of the allowance race where we just sit on the hip and cruise along that way. I guess the only worry is, is everyone going to have the same plan? But you can't take the race out of them, so I anticipate she'll break sharp and be involved early. How much early I don't know. I'll leave that up to the jock. Don't want a reverse race where she's running off early and fading late, but I think she's matured mentally and understands the process now.”

Sylvia Q and Madison's Luna, who is entered in Saturday's ninth race, an allowance sprint for older horses, are among some 10 horses Bauer has at Oaklawn. The trainer also had around 15 horses at the recently concluded Fair Grounds meeting. Bauer is wintering at Oaklawn for the first time, but before going out on his own did oversee McPeek's Oaklawn division roughly a decade ago.

“Loved my time there when I was there,” Bauer said. “Always wanted to come back, but we just were too small to split. Now this year was kind of our first time that we had enough numbers that, hey, let's give it a shot. It's worked out well.”

Bauer has compiled a 2-3-1 mark from 14 starters at the meet. His horses have collected $174,640 in purses.

Madison's Luna represented Bauer's career first Oaklawn victory, overcoming traffic trouble in a March 4 waiver-claiming sprint. The Tapit gelding returns to the allowance ranks after snapping a nine-race losing streak when running for a $40,000 claiming tag last month. Madison's Luna won his first two career starts, including the Hutchinson by five lengths.

“He's always kind of broken our hearts because we felt like he had the ability to be a top-level horse,” Bauer said. “Showed some brilliance early and then you couldn't get him back to that level. Maybe it was a confidence booster last time. A drop in class is always good. We were joking the other day that this might be his 10th last chance of protecting him. You hope the way he ran last time that maybe he's catching a groove and horses that like that track really like it. We'll give him another shot here at this level. He seems to fit. Obviously, there's a couple in there that look like they're the ones to beat, but if runs the same race back, and doesn't have to wait until the eighth pole to run, he should be a part of it.”

Madison's Luna is the 7-2 second choice in the program.
