Gulfstream Park: Mandatory Payout Spurs $5.3 Million Into Rainbow 6 Pool

Multiple winning tickets on Gulfstream Park's mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 Saturday were each worth $14,626.86.

There was $5,353.843 of new money bet into the pool at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

The Rainbow 6 begins anew Sunday with a $100,000 guaranteed pool beginning with the sixth race, an allowance optional claiming event at 1 1/16 miles on the turf featuring a field of six. The first race in the sequence is followed by a maiden special weight event at five furlongs on the turf for 3-year-old fillies. There were four turf races in Sunday's Rainbow 6.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover Sunday of $8,740.12.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory-payout days, the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

WHO'S HOT: Jockey Tyler Gaffalione had three winners on the afternoon, capping the day with his victory aboard Ride a Comet in the Tropical Park (G3).  Gaffalione also won the third race with Shadwell Stable's first-time starter, Lamutanaatty, a 3-year-old son of Into Mischief, and the allowance optional claimer fourth race with Bluegrass Parkway…Trainer Bill Mott had a pair of 3-year-olds break their maidens Saturday. Frank Fletcher Racing Operations, Inc.'s Candy Man Rocket, a son of Candy Ride making his second start, ran away from eight others to win over six furlongs by 9 ¼ lengths in 1:11.28. Donald Dizney's homebred Simovitch won going a mile by 3 ½ lengths while covering the distance in 1:39.04.

Ride A Comet Continues ‘Amazing’ Comeback With Tropical Turf Score

John Oxley and My Meadowview Farm LLC's Ride a Comet made a triumph return to turf for the first time in more than two years to capture Saturday's $100,000 Tropical Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Tropical Turf headlined an 11-race program that also featured a mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 pool that had swelled to more than $1 million and generated $5.5 million in handle Saturday.

Mark Casse-trained Ride a Comet stamped himself as a turf star of the future when he captured the Del Mar Derby (G2) Sept. 2, 2018, but immediately went to the sidelines. The 5-year-old son of Candy Ride returned to action over Woodbine's synthetic surface with a two-length victory in an Oct. 16 optional claiming allowance before capturing the Nov. 21 Kennedy Road (G2).

“He came down well-prepared from Woodbine from our crew up there. The story behind this horse is just truly amazing. A lot of the credit goes to our team in Ocala and to the owners, especially, for having the patience with him,” Casse's assistant trainer Nick Tomlinson said. “He's rewarding us every time he goes out there.”

Ride a Comet ($6.20) saved ground while settling a few lengths behind pacesetter Frostmourne, who was pressed by defending champion Tusk past fractions of 24.09 and 47.78 seconds for the first mile of the mile event from 4-year-olds and up. Frostmourne continued to show the way under John Velazquez into the turn entering the homestretch while meeting a new challenge from Casa Creed who slipped off the rail under Junior Alvarado for the stretch run. Tyler Gaffalione guided Ride a Comet off the rail entering the stretch, making a three-wide drive that carried his mount to victory by a half-length over Casa Creed.

“He's push-button. He's all class. Mark was very excited about this race,” Gaffalione said. “When I got to the paddock, Nick said, 'This is a good one.' They knew what they had. I just rode him with a lot of confidence, and he got the job done.”

Casa Creed finished second, 2 ½ lengths ahead of Frostmourne. Ride a Comet ran a mile over a firm turf in 1:33.62.

“We were very confident in him. His last work was just unbelievable. It takes a really good horse to do what he does. He goes out there and shows it every morning,” Tomlinson said. “He's such a class act. Just to be around him every day is truly a blessing.”

Ride a Comet, who was a slight favorite over Casa Creed, has won eight of 13 career starts.

Admission Office Returns in Tropical Park

Amerman Racing LLC’s Admission Office (Point of Entry) will return from a six-month layoff in Saturday’s GIII Tropical Turf S. at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Brian Lynch, the 6-year-old finished in the top three on four occasions in 2019, including in the GII Fort Lauderdale S. at Gulfstream in December. Eighth in the Pegasus Turf, he rebounded to finish second in the 11-furlong GII Mac Diarmida S. at the Hallandale oval last February before coming home fourth in the 8 1/2-furlong Sunshine Forever S. in May. Most recently, he came from off the pace to score in Churchill’s Louisville S. June 13.

“We would have loved to run in the Pegasus Turf again, but he hasn’t run since June,” explained Lynch. “He needed some time off after his last race and the Pegasus Turf comes up too soon.”

He added, “He’s coming back at a distance that isn’t really ideal for him, but it’s a good starting point. The good thing about this race is there’s plenty of pace, which ideally suits

Gulfstream..He’s his own worst enemy. He gives himself too much to do. He needs the ideal trip and the heavens to open up. He needs a clean path. He’s such a big horse, when you get him stopped, it’s hard to get him started again. He can be his own worst enemy the way he takes himself out of it, but we’ve been seeing a lot of maturity in him.”

Ride a Comet (Candy Ride {Arg}) is undefeated in two starts in 2020, both over Woodbine’s Tapeta surface. A come-from-behind victor in a seven furlong optional claimer in October, the John Oxley and My Meadowview runner took the GII Kennedy Road S. at six furlongs Nov. 21. The Mark Casse trainee has won at distances ranging from six to nine furlongs throughout his career, including the 2018 GII Del Mar Derby. Tyler Gaffalione gets the call.

William Lawrence’s Analyze It (Point of Entry), favored at 2-1 on the morning line, will scratch due to a quarter crack issue per Daily Racing Form’s Mike Welsch.

Ride A Comet Ends Pink Lloyd’s Winning Streak In Kennedy Road

Mark Casse trainees Ride a Comet and Souper Stonehenge swept the Kennedy Road Stakes exacta on Saturday at Woodbine in Toronto, Ontario, ending the win streak of reigning three-time champion male sprinter Pink Lloyd.

Patrick Husbands engineered the winning trip aboard the 5-2 second choice, Ride a Comet, who is now two-for-two since returning to action last month after a two-year layoff.

Multiple graded stakes winner Silent Poet sprinted out to lead the talented field of seven in the six-furlong Grade 2 stakes with Eskiminzin pressing through fractions of :22.77 and :44.79, while Souper Stonehenge and Dixie's Gamble stalked the pace.

Riding a 10-race win streak, even-money favorite Pink Lloyd raced outside of foes and staged a late rally from the four-path on the turn, but early trailer Ride a Comet gained ground along the rail and shot outside the front-runners in the stretch en route to a 1 1/4-length victory, with Live Oak Plantation's Souper Stonehenge finishing second under Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Owned by breeder My Meadowview Farm and John Oxley, the 5-year-old son of Candy Ride and Appealing Zophie came within one-fifth of a second of Pink Lloyd's track record, winning in 1:08.25.

Ride a Comet paid $6.90 to win and combined with 9-1 shot Souper Stonehenge for a 2-1 exacta worth $50.30 for a $2 ticket. Pink Lloyd was a game third, finishing two lengths behind the runner-up and just ahead of Silent Poet. Eskiminzin, Roaring Forties and Dixie's Gamble completed the field.

“He's my favorite horse of all time…He went a good race, he showed he's all class,” said Husbands, who was aboard for all four of Ride a Comet's Woodbine starts including his impressive two-length comeback victory here on October 16.

“The last time I rode him, it was the first time we sprint and his first time in two years going seven-eighths. And he broke sharp, you know, and I eased him back because it was his first time in a long time so after the race I said to Mark, 'he left there running and I eased him back.' He said 'alright, we're going against Pink Lloyd next start.'

“Pink Lloyd, you have to respect him. He's a legend at Woodbine, and it's a great honor to run against him and try to beat him. When you beat him, you've got to be really happy, but you have to respect him.”

Ride a Comet, who also won the Charlie Barley Stakes over one-mile of turf at Woodbine in 2018 with Husbands and the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby over 1  1/8 miles later that year, now has seven wins from a dozen lifetime starts.
