147 Horses Nominated To The Dubai World Cup Carnival

A total of 147 horses from 16 countries have been entered in the upcoming Dubai World Cup Carnival that begins at Meydan Racecourse on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. The nine-week Carnival is a preview for the Dubai World Cup night festivities on Mar. 25 next year.

Among the horses that have accepted their Carnival engagements are an 11-strong team from American-based trainer Doug O'Neill, who saddled four winners from just 19 runners in 2022. Grade II scorer Slow Down Andy (Nyquist), third in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, is set for the desert, as is Oud Metha S. winner Get Back Goldie (Goldencents) and GI Pennsylvania Derby sixth B Dawk (Gormley).

Fellow American Dallas Stewart sends Long Range Toddy (Take Charge Indy), hero of the GII Rebel S. Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), from the Charlie Hills barn, is back for a third time and he is joined by stablemate Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Richard Hannon will send group winners Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), the latter second in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night in 2022.

South American is also well represented by Group 1 winners La Validada (Arg) (Valid Stripes {Arg}), Nino Guapo (Arg) (Catcher In The Rye {Ire}) and El Musical (Arg) (Il Campione {Chi), all three from the yard of Juan Saldivia. Uruguayan Group 1 winner Loreley (Brz) (Kentuckian) is also set to participate for trainer Ricardo Colombo.

Stephanie Cooley, International Liaison for Dubai Racing Club, said, “We are delighted with the strength of nominations which we have received from across the world for the Carnival.

“To have nations such as South Korea, who have suffered from Covid restrictions in recent years, returning is gratifying, and it's also superb to welcome back many returning equine stars as well as some new faces from the UK, Ireland and the USA.”

Group 2 Winner Persian Force To Stand For €10K

Group 2 winner Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) will stand for €10,000 at Tally-Ho Stud next year, the stud announced. A winner of the G2 July S., the son of Vida Amorosa (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was also placed three times at the highest level in the Phoenix S., Prix Morny, and the Middle Park S. He ended his career with a close fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland in November. The chestnut was retired last month with a mark of 8-3-3-1 and $350,183 in earnings.

“Persian Force is the toughest 2-year-old I've ever trained,” said Richard Hannon, who trained the colt for Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing. “He competed at the very highest level all his life and he was just so tough. He was our first 2-year-old runner on turf [of 2022] and our last 2-year-old runner on turf [of 2022], which just shows off his steeliness.

“One of his best attributes was his sound of mind. He was so relaxed. You could turn him on. He was like a motorbike, you turn up the throttle a little bit, do a bit of work and then he'd come right back down.

“I can't wait to train his offspring. To think Mehmas has already produced one of our best 2-year-olds–if Persian Force does the same, I'll be in business a long time.”

Persian Force To Stand Alongside His Father Mehmas At Tally-Ho Stud

Less than a week after his owner Kia Joorabchian announced that leading juvenile Persian Force (Ire) would be retired to stud, Roger O'Callaghan confirmed that the Group 2-winning speedster would be heading back home to Tally-Ho Stud, where he will stand alongside his father Mehmas (Ire) in 2023.

Tally-Ho snapped up Persian Force at the November Foal Sales at Goffs in 2020 for €75,000 from Ringfort Stud before selling the colt the following year at the Orby Sale to Peter and Ross Doyle for €225,000.

Last seen finishing a gallant fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, Persian Force won three of his eight starts for Richard Hannon, with the clear highlight coming when he landed the G2 July S. at Newmarket in good style.

That effort came off the back of a smart second to Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot. Persian Force also placed three times at the highest level, including when narrowly beaten by Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the Prix Morny at Deauville.

Confirming the news at Tattersalls, O'Callaghan said, “It will be nice to have Persian Force standing alongside his father Mehmas at Tally-Ho next year. Persian Force was a lovely horse when we bought him as a foal, a lovely horse when we sold him at the Orby and he is still a lovely horse.

“He was bought by a very shrewd judge in Ross Doyle at the Orby and was a very good horse from start to finish with Richard Hannon, who did a brilliant job with him. He showed his class when winning the G2 July S. at Newmarket and I think breeders will be keen to use him. We haven't decided on a fee yet.”

Persian Force retires to stud with £289,012 in career earnings under his belt and a rating of 112. When revealing the news on Sunday that the colt would be retired this season, Joorabchian said that Persian Force compared favourably to Mehmas, who has emerged as one of the leading sires in Europe after beginning his career at Tally-Ho at €12,000. He will stand for €60,000 next year.

Speaking on Luck On Sunday, Joorabchian said, “He's followed the footsteps of his father, he's done everything Mehmas has done.

“Arguably, according to Richard Hannon, who trained both, he's a better looking version of his father and he's got a better pedigree. He started in March and ran in everything.”

He added, “He's never had a bad run, he's followed the footsteps of his father from start to finish and his father retired at the end of his 2-year-old career and has had a fantastic career in stud as a stallion.

“His father will stand at €60,000, so looking at that he can definitely follow in the footsteps of his father, if not better, because your son is always better than you.”

G2 July S. Hero Persian Force Retired For Stallion Duty

Group 2 winner Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}–Vida Amorosa {Ire}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}), placed three times at the highest level, has been retired to stand at stud in 2023, Amo Racing's Tom Pennington confirmed to the TDN on Sunday morning. A stud farm and fee for the precocious juvenile will be announced in the very near future.

“Persian's done an incredible job, to be honest,” Amo Racing's Kia Joorabchian told Nick Luck during Luck On Sunday. “He's done everything that Mehmas has done. Arguably, according to Richard Hannon, who trained both, he's a better-looking version of his father. And he's got a better pedigree.

“He has started in March, running [in] everything, from almost every Group 1 there was, coming second in most of them. He's never had a bad run. He's followed the footsteps of his dad from start to finish. His father retired at the end of his 2-year-old career. [Mehmas] has had a fantastic career as a stallion. His father will stand today at €60,000. [We looked at that] and thought he could follow in the footsteps of his father [at stud].”

Bred by Tom Lacy, the March foal was sold for €75,000 from Ringfort Stud to Tally-Ho Stud during the Goffs November Foal Sale in 2020. He entered the Amo Racing fold after hammering for €225,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2021. Sent to the yard of Richard Hannon, he ran out a 4 3/4-length debut winner at Doncaster in March. Also a winner at Newbury two months later, he was second in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, but returned to winning ways with a 1 1/2-length score in the G2 July S. at Newmarket on July 7. Second in the G1 Phoenix S. at the Curragh in August, he filled that role again in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville later that month. Third in the Sept. 24 G1 Middle Park S., Persian Force was fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in November and retires with a mark of 8-3-3-1 and $350,183 in earnings.

A full-brother to the G2 Richmond S. third Gubbass (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), Persian Force hails from the family of dual Group 3 winner Garrus (Ire), by Mehmas's sire Acclamation (GB), as well as G1 Phoenix S. and G1 National S. hero Danehil Dancer (Ire) (Danehill), who became a successful sire.
