Tattersalls Launches New Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus For Craven Breeze Up Sale

Owners of 2-year-olds bought at the 2021 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale look set to be rewarded with unprecedented bonuses as Tattersalls launches a new £250,000 (US$346,212) Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus in addition to the lucrative and widely acclaimed £15,000 (US$20,773) Craven Breeze Up Bonus scheme.

The new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus will offer a £125,000 (US$173,108) bonus for the first Craven Breeze Up winner of any of the six 2-year-old races at the Royal Meeting, with £100,000 (US$138,488) being paid to the owner and £25,000 (US$34,622) to the vendor of the horse. An additional £125,000 bonus, with the same £100,000/£25,000 split, will also be paid to the first Craven Breeze Up winner of any of the 15 European Group 1 races open to 2-year-olds, including the all-age Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York and the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp.

Commenting on the new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus reinforces our commitment not only to the flagship Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, but also to rewarding owners in as many innovative ways as we can. The £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus immediately captured the imagination of owners and trainers and the new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus further enhances the appeal of a sale which annually produces a consistent flow of high class precocious Royal Ascot two-year-olds as well as Group 1 performers throughout the year. The multiple bonuses will reward numerous owners and in addition, the prospect of an owner winning a £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus, followed by the £125,000 Royal Ascot Bonus and ultimately the £125,000 Group 1 Bonus is also very real.”

Endorsing the new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus, trainer Richard Hannon added;

“We have bought some serious two-year-olds from the Craven Breeze Up with Peter and Ross Doyle over the years and the combination of the new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus with the £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus will make it a compelling prospect for our owners. Mehmas springs to mind, although we will have to do better this time. He finished second in the Coventry at Royal Ascot, second in the Group 1 National Stakes and third in the Group 1 Middle Park.”

The 2021 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale will take place April 12-14, with all 2-year-olds breezing on the morning of Monday, April 12 on the Jockey Club Estates' watered gallop at Newmarket's Rowley Mile Racecourse.

Tattersalls Launches New Craven Bonus

Tattersalls has announced a new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus for graduates of its Craven Breeze Up Sale, which is this year scheduled for Apr. 13 and 14 at Park Paddocks, with the breeze over the Rowley Mile on Apr. 12.

Half of the bonus will be paid out to the connections of the first Craven Breeze Up winner of any 2-year-old race at Royal Ascot, with £100,000 designated for the owner of the horse and £25,000 for the vendor. The second half of the bonus, with the same owner/vendor split, will be paid to the first Craven Breeze Up winner of a European Group 1 for 2-year-olds. The G1 Nunthorpe S. and G1 Prix de l'Abbaye, which are all-age and open to 2-year-olds, also qualify.

The Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus will be run alongside the current £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus, which rewards owners if their purchase wins a Class 2, 3 or 4 maiden or novice race in Britain or an open 2-year-old maiden in Ireland. There is a £1,000 buy in.

“The new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus reinforces our commitment not only to the flagship Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, but also to rewarding owners in as many innovative ways as we can,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “The £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus immediately captured the imagination of owners and trainers and the new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus further enhances the appeal of a sale which annually produces a consistent flow of high class precocious Royal Ascot 2-year-olds as well as Group 1 performers throughout the year. The multiple bonuses will reward numerous owners and in addition, the prospect of an owner winning a £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus, followed by the £125,000 Royal Ascot Bonus and ultimately the £125,000 Group 1 Bonus is also very real.”

Trainer Richard Hannon endorsed the concept, saying, “We have bought some serious 2-year-olds from the Craven Breeze Up with Peter and Ross Doyle over the years and the combination of the new £250,000 Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus with the £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus will make it a compelling prospect for our owners. Mehmas springs to mind, although we will have to do better this time. He finished second in the Coventry at Royal Ascot, second in the G1 National S. and third in the G1 Middle Park.”

Fitri Hay’s Good Listener A Record Breaker For Mehmas

Fresh from matching Iffraaj’s European record of 38 freshman winners on Sunday, Tally-Ho Stud resident Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) stood out on his own–on a magnificent 39–after Fitri Hay’s Good Listener (Ire) shed maiden status in Monday’s Visit attheraces.com Novice Median Auction S., going a shade over five furlongs, at Windsor.

2nd-Royal Windsor, £5,300, Nov, 10-19, 2yo, 5f 21yT, 1:02.40, sf.
GOOD LISTENER (IRE) (c, 2, Mehmas {Ire}–Looks Great {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}), who posted a debut third tackling five furlongs in an Oct. 9 York novices’ heat last time, recovered to race under a tight grip behind the leaders in sixth after sitting back at the break. Tanking ever closer from halfway, the 13-8 pick was switched to the far-side rail for his bid approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under mild rousting in the closing stages to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths from Faustus (GB) (Mayson {GB}), becoming a European record-breaking 39th winner for his Tally-Ho Stud-based freshman sire (by Acclamation {GB}). “I think it might have suited him that he missed the gate, otherwise he might have been a bit too keen,” reflected trainer Richard Hannon. “He sort of had nowhere to go and that would have also suited him, he’s learnt a bit and learnt to take his time. He’s by the magic sire and looks a decent horse going forward.” Good Listener is the first of two foals out of the unraced Looks Great (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and the February-foaled bay is half to a yearling colt by Gutaifan (Ire). Looks Great, once again reported in foal to Mehmas (Ire), is a granddaughter of Sumoto (GB) (Mtoto {GB}), whose descendants also include G1SW sire Compton Admiral (GB) (Suave Dancer), G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero Summoner (GB) (Inchinor {GB}), MG1SW distaffer The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and MG1SW speedster Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}). Sales history: €35,000 Wlg ’18 GOFNOV; £50,000 Ylg ’19 GOFFPR. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, $6,292. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

MGSW Threat to Stand in France

MGSW Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}-Flare of Firelight, by Birdstone) will stand at Haras du Mont Goubert, Jour de Galop reported on Tuesday. He will stand for €6,000,

The Richard Hannon trainee and ‘TDN Rising Star’ captured the G2 Gimcrack S. and the G2 Champagne S. and was runner-up in the G2 Richmond S. and G2 Coventry S., all as a juvenile. Bred by La Lumiere Partnership and a 100,000gns Tattersalls December foal, the Cheveley Park Stud colourbearer’s record stands at 9-3-2-0 and $328,925 in earnings.

“It is rare to see such a 2-year-old start at stud in France, especially afer winning such prestigious group races in England,” Haras du Mont Goubert manager Victor Langlais told JDG. “He’ll be supported by Haras du Mont Goubert, Haras d’Etreham and Coolmore, who are involved in his breeding career. They purchased the horse from Cheveley Park Stud. Twenty shares [of 60] are for sale at the rate of €20,000, with two seasons for life per share.”

Out of a half-sister to French listed winner and G2 Prix Corrida bridesmaid That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality), Threat counts European highweight and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup heroine Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector) as his second dam. She in turn is a half-sister to G1 Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo), who has thrown another European highweight in Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a two-time Group 1 winner. This is also the female family of dual Eclipse Award winner Main Sequence (Aldebaran) and European champion Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).
