Rich Man Poor Man Crowned At The Jockey Club RoR National Championships

After five days of competition, Rich Man Poor Man (Ire) (Robin Des Champs {Fr}) was crowned the 2022 Supreme Champion at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at the Aintree International Equestrian Centre on Saturday, Aug. 27. Ridden by Kristine Douglas, the former Philip Kirby trainee has blossomed since leaving the racecourse. Runner-up and Reserve Champion was last year's winner, Minella Rebellion (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}), with Katie Dashwood aboard.

A total of 280 former racehorses were entered to compete at Aintree over the five days in classes for dressage, arena eventing, show jumping and showing at Europe's largest event exclusively for retrained racehorses. Other showing class winners included Thistlecrack (GB) (Kayf Tara {GB}), Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}), and American (Fr) (Malinas {Ger}), while Goldream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) was runner-up in a dressage class. The Queen's horse, First Receiver (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), won the Tattersalls RoR Novice Showing Series Championship final.

Di Arbuthnot, RoR Chief Executive, said, “The Jockey Club RoR National Championships is a very special event with an atmosphere like no other. It was also notable this year how many fabulous looking older horses we had competing, not least the 20-year-old winner of the Elite Performance Award for dressage, My Diss Sire (GB) (Vettori {Ire}). Our thanks again to The Jockey Club and Aintree for their support and we are already looking forward to next year.”

Racing Showcase on The Hill On Cazoo Oaks and Derby Days

There will be a special interactive display on The Hill at Epsom Downs in recognition of The Queen's passion for the Thoroughbred during the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Cazoo Oaks and Cazoo Derby Days, June 3-4. Billed the Racing Showcase, the display will highlight the care that is shown for racehorses throughout their lives, how the racing industry is engaging and inspiring young people to look at racing as a career, the provisions the industry makes for its people and how racing is looking to reach out to communities it has not engaged with before. Amongst the organisations represented are The Racing Foundation, British Racing School, Racing to School, Epsom Riding for the Disabled, Ebony Horse Club, Retraining of Racehorses, Racing Welfare, Injured Jockeys Fund, Careers in Racing, Discover Newmarket, The National Stud, The National Horse Racing Museum and Great British Racing International.

Simon Durrant, General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said, “As part of the official celebrations for The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we felt that it was important to highlight Her Majesty's passion both for racing and the horse in general.

“Over the 70 years of her reign, The Queen's interest extends far beyond what happens on the track and we feel it is important that this is both recognised and celebrated.

“The Racing Showcase on The Hill will enable the public to engage with and learn more about many aspects of racing and the wider equine world. I am delighted that so many organisations have agreed to participate and hopefully their efforts to educate, inform and inspire will show just what a fantastic industry and sport we work in.”

The Queen’s Former Racehorses To Parade At Epsom On Derby Day

A quintet of Her Majesty The Queen's former racehorses-Barbers Shop (GB) (Saddlers' Hall {Ire}), First Receiver (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), Quadrille (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Prince's Trust (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), and Forth Bridge (GB) (Bernardini)–will parade at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Cazoo Derby Day, June 4. The parade, which is part of a tribute to The Queen's contribution to the horseracing and breeding industry, was organized by Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) and The Jockey Club. The monarch will be in attendance for the G1 Cazoo Derby, which is part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations. This event will be in addition to a Guard of Honour of 40 jockeys who have ridden for The Queen, who will greet her arrival dressed in her famous silks at the track on the day.

Phil White, London Regional Director at The Jockey Club, said, “We're delighted that Retraining of Racehorses will be bringing some of Her Majesty's former racehorses to parade on Cazoo Derby Day.

“We know The Queen is incredibly fond of all of her horses, whether they are racing or involved in other disciplines, so this will be a great way to combine her passion for the Thoroughbred with a chance to educate people about the work RoR do and the lives racehorses live once their careers on the track have come to an end.”
