Combatant Retired To Rockridge Stud In New York For 2022 Season

Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap winner Combatant (Scat Daddy – Border Dispute by Boundary) has been retired and will stand at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, N.Y., beginning with the 2022 breeding season.

The Hronis Racing color-bearer was sold to Brian Levings of Levings Racing in a deal brokered by Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock, Colt Pike, and David Ingordo.

“I've had fun on the racing side and decided to dip a toe in the stallion market,” Levings said. “New York has a strong program and has shown that stallions from the Empire State can have a bright future.”

“A Grade 1 winning son of Scat Daddy is a great complement to the New York stallion market and a perfect fit for our program,” says Rockridge's Lere Visagie.

Combatant is currently being syndicated and will stand for $7,500 LFSN his first year. The stallion will remain in Kentucky through the end of the Keeneland September Sale for any Kentucky breeders interested in the New York program.

Grade 1 Winner Dayoutoftheoffice Retired

Dayoutoftheoffice, a Grade 1 winner who ran second in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, has been retired from racing, Daily Racing Form reports.

The 3-year-old daughter of Into Mischief was being pointed toward the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga, but trainer Tim Hamm said the filly's broodmare value outweighed her racing value at this point in the year. After discussing the matter with co-owner and breeder Siena Farm, the decision was made to retire her.

Dayoutoftheoffice retired with three wins in six starts for earnings of $642,300. She won each of her first three career starts, first breaking her maiden at Gulfstream Park, then she rolled off victories in the G3 Schuylerville Stakes and G1 Frizette Stakes before finishing second to Vequist in the Breeders' cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland.

At three, Dayoutoftheoffice finished second in the G2 Eight Belles Stakes, then ran fourth in the G1 Acorn Stakes in her final career start on June 5.

Grade 1 Winner Charlatan Retired To Hill ‘N’ Dale At Xalapa

Hill 'n' Dale Farms announced today that multiple Grade 1 winner Charlatan has been retired from racing and will take up stud duty at the farm's newly restored stallion complex at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa in Paris, Ky.

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, the imposing son of Eclipse champion and champion sire Speightstown out of Breeders' Cup Distaff-placed Authenticity, he sold as the second-highest-priced colt for his sire at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he was hammered down for $700,000. Purchased by SF Bloodstock / Starlight West, the colt raced for owners SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Hertrich, III, Frederick, Fielding, John D. and Golconda Stables.

The freakishly-talented Charlatan served notice of his brilliance in his first start, drawing off by 5 3/4 lengths in 1:08 and change for the six panels earning TDN Rising Star status. All told, the brilliant chestnut who many compared to Justify, compiled a record of four wins and a second from five starts with career earnings of $4,047,200.

He decimated the field in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, winning by six lengths, in a hand ride. He rounded out his 3-year-old campaign with a devastating and visually impressive performance in the G1 Malibu where he won by 4 1/2 widening lengths. His only defeat came in the $20 million Saudi Cup where he was edged out at the wire, running a gallant second to Mishriff. He won his four races by a combined 26 1/2 lengths.

“Horses with Charlatan's immense ability combined with superior pedigree, conformation, depth of female family and star-quality appeal are a very rare commodity,” said John G. Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale. He is one of the most talented horses I have seen run who combines world class sprinter/miler speed with the ability to carry it around two turns. He is a striking individual who should impart size, substance, balance, and brilliance to his foals. It is an honor to have Charlatan set the standard of excellence as the first stallion whose career we launch here at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa.”

“We're very proud of everything Charlatan accomplished in his brief but brilliant career: He's one of the most perfect physical specimens to come to stud in recent times and there's no doubt he will be supported accordingly. On behalf of the SF racing partners we wish John and the team at Hill 'n' Dale the very best,” said Tom Ryan managing partner.

“Physically he's one of the best physical horses we've ever bred. What sets him apart is the way he moves. He moves like a great horse. He is just a real athlete. He is the epitome of what we've tried to breed up to this point. Charlatan is a perfect combination of the genes meeting the physical. He is an absolute standout,” said Stonestreet Farm bloodstock adviser John Moynihan.

A stud fee will be announced at a later time.

Grade 1-Placed Gouverneur Morris Sold To Enter Stud In Argentina

Gouverneur Morris, a multiple Grade 1-placed son of Constitution, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Haras La Pasion in Argentina for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 4-year-old was purchased by a group of Argentine breeders including Haras La Pasion, Haras Las Racies, and Haras La Nora to stand in the country full-time. He is currently under quarantine in Miami, Fla., as he awaits export.

Gouverneur Morris retired with two wins in five career starts for earnings of $247,500. Todd Pletcher trained the colt for owners Team Valor International and WinStar Farm. He was a $600,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Selected Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The colt quickly generated attention as a juvenile with a nine-length debut win in Saratoga, followed by a runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

He came back at age three to draw off in an allowance optional claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs, setting a new track record for a mile and 40 yards in the process. Then, he moved forward on the Kentucky Derby trail with a fourth in the G1 Florida Derby, and a third in the rescheduled G1 Arkansas Derby, in what would be his final start.

Gouverneur Morris was knocked off the Derby trail last June after battling both a leg infection and colitis. He was tentatively scheduled to return to the races this spring, but it never materialized.

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Craig and Carrie Brogden, and James Miller, Gouverneur Morris is out of the stakes-placed Unbridled's Song mare Addison Run.
