Grade 1 Winner Basin Retired To Spendthrift Farm For 2022

Basin, the dominant winner of the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, has been retired from racing and will stand stud at Spendthrift Farm for the 2022 breeding season.

The Grade 1-winning juvenile by Liam's Map will stand for a fee of $7,500 S&N and is available for inspection. He also becomes the newest stallion that will participate in Spendthrift's renowned “Share The Upside” program.

“We are excited to add Basin to the Spendthrift stallion ranks and to be able to offer breeders a horse of his caliber through our Share The Upside program,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “We pride ourselves on being able to offer quality at all levels, and we believe there's a lot to like with this dominant Grade 1-winning 2-year-old by Liam's Map.”

The Share The Upside fee for Basin will be $8,500 for one year. Additionally, breeders must breed one mare in 2023 on a complimentary basis. After the breeder has a live foal in 2023, pays the stud fee, and breeds a mare back, he or she will earn a lifetime breeding right beginning in 2024.

Campaigned by Jackpot Farm, Basin impressively broke his maiden at Saratoga before going on to score a runaway 6 1/2-length victory in the meet's premier race for 2-year-old colts – the G1 Hopeful – in his next start. He stopped the clock in 1:23.48 for the seven furlongs, closing out a juvenile campaign that saw him garner some Eclipse Award votes.

As a 3-year-old, Basin began the year on the Kentucky Derby trail, finishing runner-up to Charlatan in the G1 Arkansas Derby after hitting the board behind Nadal in the G2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn. He turned back to one turn to be runner-up to Grade 1 winner Yaupon in the G2 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga. In 2021, Basin captured the Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream.

The first Grade 1 winner by promising young sire Liam's Map, Basin retires to Spendthrift with earnings of $573,640. He hails from the multiple stakes-producing Johannesburg mare, Appenzell.

Cistron Retired To Harris Farms In California

Hronis Racing's Cistron, a Grade 1 winner of $768,719, has been retired from racing and will enter stud next year at John Harris' Harris Farms outside Coalinga, Calif.

The versatile multiple graded stakes winner won or placed in 13 black-type events from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on dirt and turf including victories in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar, the G2 Kona Gold Stakes and G3 San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita, and the Northern Spur Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

His sire The Factor, a multiple Grade 1 winner of $922,180, set Santa Anita's current six-furlong track record of 1:06.98 as a 2-year-old in 2010. He is the sire of 29 stakes winners and has amassed six-crop progeny earnings approaching $35 million.

Cistron is now available for inspection at the farm. A stud fee will be announced later this fall.

Sadler’s Joy Retired To Stand In Turkey

Grade 1-winning turf specialist Sadler's Joy has been retired from racing and sold to stand in Turkey for breeder Arif Kurtel, the Turkish publication Yaris Dergisi reports.

The 8-year-old son of Kitten's Joy finished his career with seven wins in 37 career starts, with earnings of $2,679,910.

A homebred for Woodslane Farm and trained by Tom Albertrani, Sadler's Joy's career took off at age three, when he Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes and G2 Pan American Stakes, and finished in the money in two additional Grade 1 races. He came back at four to win the G2 Mac Diarmida Stakes and the G3 Red Smith Stakes, and hit the board in four Grade 1s, including a third in the 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs.

Sadler's Joy raced for two more seasons, and notched three more in-the-money finishes.

Sadler's Joy is out of the the unraced Dynaformer mare Dynaire, who is the dam of five winners from seven foals to race, also including stakes-placed Lunaire and Dyna Passer. His second dam is the German-born Binya, who was a Grade 3 winner in the U.S., and a Group 3-placed stakes winner in France. His extended family includes Grade 1 winner Sabin.

Kitten's Joy has has seen his influence grow among Turkish breeders. Sadler's Joy joins fellow Kitten's Joy son Catapult among Kurtel's stallion holdings, the latter of which was purchased as a stallion prospect at the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

In recent years, Kurtel has also imported stallions to Turkey including Bluegrass Cat, Air Vice Marshal, Tizway, Avery Island, and War Correspondent.

Grade 1 Winner Known Agenda Retired To Spendthrift Farm For 2022 Season

Known Agenda, the dominant winner of this year's Grade 1 Florida Derby, has been retired from racing and will take up stud duty at Spendthrift Farm in 2022.

The son of leading sire Curlin will stand for an introductory fee of $10,000 S&N and will be offered through the farm's renowned “Share The Upside” program on a limited basis. He is available for inspection by appointment.

“Any time you can add a Florida Derby winner by Curlin with his looks and pedigree, you jump at the opportunity. Known Agenda ticks an awful lot of boxes, and the Florida Derby has produced a lot of very good sires, especially in recent history,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “We are delighted to partner again with Vinnie Viola, who bred and raced this colt out of his Grade 1-winning mare. Known Agenda is one of those rare classic-type Grade 1 winners that is by a Grade 1 winner and out of a Grade 1 winner. He reminded us quite a bit of Vino Rosso, another son of Curlin that we stand that Vinnie co-owned and campaigned with Todd Pletcher. If Known Agenda's foals look anything like what we have seen from Vino Rosso, then the sky's the limit.”

A homebred for Vinnie Viola's St. Elias Stables, Known Agenda broke his maiden as a 2-year-old last fall at Aqueduct, defeating eventual G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes winner Greatest Honour. At three, he won a Gulfstream allowance race by 11 lengths before capturing the prestigious $750,000 Florida Derby going away by 2 3/4 lengths, stamping himself as a leading sophomore.

“We are excited to be standing Known Agenda, our first homebred to go to stud, at Spendthrift Farm,” said Viola. “This colt showed early promise at two and continued to move forward at three with a dominant victory in the Florida Derby. We are looking for him to continue the great tradition of Florida Derby winners going on to successful stud careers, and we plan on supporting him heavily in that mission.”

Known Agenda joined champion Essential Quality and Medina Spirit as the only Kentucky Derby contenders to run a 6 on the Ragozin Sheets heading into the Run for the Roses, where he would encounter a troubled trip breaking from the vaunted post No. 1.

An earner of $641,700, Known Agenda became the first Florida Derby winner for his sire Curlin. He is also a Grade 1 winner by a Grade 1 winner and out of a Grade 1 winner, as his dam Byrama captured the 2013 Vanity S. (G1) on the main track at Hollywood Park.

“Known Agenda reminded me a great deal of Vino Rosso. He possessed the qualities of some of the better Curlins we've had. He's a good-sized, athletic, very well-balanced horse,” said trainer Todd Pletcher. “His Florida Derby win was ultra-impressive, and, obviously, that's been a great race for us when you think of the colts that have gone on to become top sires like Scat Daddy and Constitution.”
