GISW and BC Runner-Up Smooth Like Strait to War Horse Place

Grade I winner Smooth Like Straight (Midnight Lute–Smooth as Usual, by Flower Alley), retired sound from racing in March, will stand in 2024 at War Horse Place near Lexington, where his fee will be $3,500 live foal. Blood-Horse was the first with the story.

A Cannon Thoroughbreds, LLC homebred trained by Michael McCarthy, Smooth Like Strait campaigned for five seasons and won five graded events, including the 2021 GI Shoemaker Mile S, the 2020 GII Twilight Derby, and the 2020 GII Mathis Brothers Mile S. He was also runner-up to Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Mile and placed in six other Grade I races. The 6-year-old retires with a record of 26-7-9-3 and earnings of $1,813,863.

MGISW Modern Games Retired

MGISW Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Modern Ideals {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}), a winner at the Group 1/Grade I level at two, three and four, has been retired from racing. Stud plans for Modern Games will be announced at a later date.

A half-brother to 2023 Classic heroine Mawj (Ire), the Godolphin homebred won four of six starts at two, including the G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.

At three, he added victories in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp, the GI Woodbine Mile in Canada before recording his second Breeders' Cup success in the GI Mile at Keeneland.

He recorded his first Group 1 win on home soil at four, taking Newbury's May 20 Lockinge S. by 1 1/2 lengths before rounding out his career with a fourth in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot June 20.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said, “Modern Games was a brilliant horse to train and such a great advert for Godolphin. To win at two Breeders' Cups, to be part of our trio of Guineas winners in 2022, and to land the Lockinge Stakes this season, shows his class, toughness and durability.

“He answered every call we asked of him, and we will miss him at Moulton Paddocks. I'm sure he will be a huge success in his next career as a stallion.”

WinStar to Stand Two Phil’s

Three-time graded winner and runner-up in the 2023 GI Kentucky Derby Two Phil's (Hard Spun-Mia Torri, by General Quarters) will stand the 2024 season at WinStar Farm near Lexington. His retirement was previously announced after the chestnut suffered an ankle injury during his win in the June 24 GIII Ohio Derby. A fee will be revealed later.

“We have been looking for a Danzig-line horse that meets our standard of physicality, pedigree, and race record for some time now,” said Elliott Walden, president, CEO, and racing manager of WinStar Farm. “I think Two Phil's could have been the best 3-year-old in the country if his career had not been cut short after his dominant win in the Ohio Derby with a 5 Ragozin, 105 Beyer, and a negative 3/4 on Thorograph. However you look at it, he is top class.”

After a solid 2-year-old season which was highlighted by a win in Churchill's GIII Street Sense S., Two Phil's burst onto the national scene with placings in the GII Risen Star S. and GIII Lecomte S. prior to a dominant victory in the GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway in March, which propelled him to the Kentucky Derby. Bred by Phillip Sagan and campaigned by Sagan, Patricia's Hope LLC, and Madaket Stables, Two Phil's just missed to Mage (Good Magic) in the Derby. Skipping the rest of the Triple Crown races, he was routed to the Ohio Derby at Thistledown, where he attained a third consecutive triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure (105). His Beyers in the Jeff Ruby and Kentucky Derby were 101 and 105, respectively.

“From the time he came into my barn at two, Two Phil's was a standout,” said trainer Larry Rivelli. “He is the best horse I have ever trained, and I look forward to his babies.”

Two Phil's retires with a record of 10-5-2-1 and earnings of $1,583,450.

Order Of Australia Retired And Will Stand In India

Breeders' Cup winner Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Senta's Dream {GB}, by Danehill) has been sold privately and will stand at Manjri Stud in India beginning in 2024 according to published reports. A fee will be announced later.

Bred by Aidan and Annemarie O'Brien's Whisperview Trading, the Coolmore partners-owned bay had been entered in the Tattersalls July Sale, but had been withdrawn. Trained by O'Brien for five seasons, the son of three-time Group/Grade 1 producer Senta's Dream won six of his 25 starts and earned over $2.25 million.

Besides his 2020 GI Breeders' Cup Mile score, he also triumphed in two editions of the G2 Minstrel S. (2021/22) and was placed in another five top-level races across England, France, and the U.S. A half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) and the late GI Belmont Oaks/Beverly D. S. heroine Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), the 6-year-old will stand alongside Group 3 winner Phoenix Tower and the Group 1-placed Fiero (Jpn).
