GSW Prime Attraction to Stand in Ontario

Prime Attraction (Unbridled's Song–Strawberry Sense, by A.P. Indy), winner of the 2017 GIII Native Diver S., has been retired and will stand at Horsepower Racing Stable near Shelburne, Ontario. In addition to his Native Diver win, Prime Attraction placed in an additional five graded stakes, including the 2018 GI Pacific Classic S. and two graded turf events. Out of a half-sister to 2002 juvenile champion Vindication (Seattle Slew), Prime Attraction retires with a record of 23-4-4-2 and earnings of $557,795.

“Prime Attraction is big, attractive, and well bred,” said Horsepower's Tim Orlando. “He had a stellar career. He has no inbreeding in his first five generations and is free of Northern Dancer. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to stand such a remarkable horse in Ontario.”

The introductory fee for Prime Attraction is C$2,500.

Classic Winner Tiz the Law Retired

Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law (Constitution–Tizfiz, by Tiznow), winner of the GI Belmont S. and GI Runhappy Travers S. this summer, has been retired from racing. It was announced shortly after the Belmont that the sophomore colt would stand at Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud upon retirement.

“The entire Tiz The Law team is deeply disappointed that Tiz The Law will be unable to race as a 4-year-old as planned,” stated Jack Knowlton, Operating Manager of Sackatoga Stable. “He has provided the 35 owners a unique opportunity to compete and succeed at the highest level of Thoroughbred racing. His impressive victory in the GI Travers at Saratoga Race Course was particularly rewarding for the Saratoga based stable. Sackatoga Stable is looking forward to the next chapter of his career as a stallion.”

“From day one when he broke his maiden at Saratoga we have been watching him closely and he has everything you look for in a stallion prospect,” said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan. “He has an outstanding race record, he’s a very good-looking individual and he boasts a strong pedigree. [Trainer] Barclay Tagg, [assistant trainer] Robin Smullen and their team have done a fantastic job with him and we are also grateful to Jack Knowlton and his partners in Sackatoga Stable for letting us be a part of him.”

Bred in New York by Twin Creeks Farm, Tiz the Law began his 2-year-old season with a 4 1/4-length maiden special weight win at Saratoga, then came back for another open daylight victory in Belmont’s GI Champagne S. The connections immediately announced the striking bay would skip the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, held that year at Santa Anita, in favor of the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Downs in order to get a start over the track to prepare for the 2020 Kentucky Derby. The track came up sloppy and Tiz the Law finished third in the Kentucky Jockey Club in what would be his only loss in his first seven career starts.

Trainer Barclay Tagg regrouped and Tiz the Law was unstoppable through this spring and summer despite the interrupted racing schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He reeled off consecutive, powerful wins in the GIII Holy Bull S. and GI Curlin Florida Derby, as well as in the aforementioned Belmont and Travers. Tiz the Law was the first New York-bred to win the Belmont since 1882.

Second in the rescheduled GI Kentucky Derby to likely champion Authentic (Into Mischief), Tiz the Law was last seen finishing off the board behind that same foe in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic. He retires with a record of 9-6-1-1 and earnings of $2,735,300.

“While it is unfortunate that Tiz’s racing career has been cut short, we have been extremely fortunate and blessed to have had him in our lives,” said trainer Barclay Tagg. “Robin and I were able to pick him out and train him to win the Grade I Champagne as a 2-year-old and three Grade I races [Florida Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers] as well as run 2nd in the Kentucky Derby this year. He has taken his owners and Barclay Tagg Racing Stable to places that most owners and trainers only dream about. We look forward to his career as a Stallion with Ashford Stud.”

The four-time Grade I winner will now join two other Belmont S. winners from the last five years at Ashford, which also stands Triple Crown winners American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and Justify (Scat Daddy) in Versailles, Kentucky.

Tiz the Law’s dam won the 2009 GII San Gorgonio H. and is a full-sister to 2014 GIII Precisionist S. winner and GISP Fury Kapcori. Her granddam is a half-sister to 1997 Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (Phone Trick).

Tiz the Law’s stud fee will be $40,000 and he will be available for inspection at Ashford starting Jan. 4.

‘She Was A Queen’: Group 1 Winner Magical Retired To Join Broodmare Band At Coolmore

Brilliant seven-time Group 1 winner Magical (Galileo) has been retired and will join the broodmare band at Coolmore Stud, with mating plans yet to be decided.

In September, the Aidan O'Brien-trained mare became the second dual winner of the Irish Champion Stakes and was last seen finishing a close third in the G1 Hong Kong Cup. She retires with an impressive record of 12 wins and 10 placings from 28 starts; her achievements earning connections over £4.8million ($6.4million) in prize money.

“Her mum (Halfway To Heaven) was a queen, she was a queen and she was by Galileo, so I suppose you could call him the king,” O'Brien said of his stable star, adding, “It would be exciting to train her offspring.”

On the highlight of Magical's illustrious career, he said, “The days that stand out are the Champion Stakes. She was amazing, she always turned up. She was tough, she was consistent and had a super mind and was very sound.”

Magical is one of two G1 winners bred by Coolmore out of top-class race mare Halfway To Heaven, herself a daughter of King's Stand Stakes heroine Cassandra Go.

Maximum Security to Stand for $20,000

Eclipse Champion Maximum Security (New Year’s Day–Lil Indy, by Anasheed) has been retired from racing and will stand as Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Central Kentucky for the 2021 breeding season. His fee will be $20,000.

“Maximum Security was an exceptional racehorse and I have no doubt that he will prove very popular with breeders once they see him,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “He’s an extremely impressive-looking individual.”

Named champion 3-year-old colt in 2019, Maximum Security retires with an official record of four Grade I scores, including the Florida Derby, Haskell Invitational S., Cigar Mile H., and Pacific Classic S. He was last seen finishing fifth behind stablemate Authentic (Into Mischief) in Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, the only time in his career he had crossed the wire worse than second. As has been well documented, Maximum Security was disqualified to 17th for interference after crossing the finish line first while undefeated in the 2019 GI Kentucky Derby. In addition, $10 million in prize money from his win in the Feb. 29 Saudi Cup is being withheld pending the outcome of charges against his then-trainer, Jason Servis, who was indicted for using performance-enhancing drugs. Maximum Security was moved to the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert after the Saudi trip to register wins in the Pacific Classic and GII San Diego H.

Bred and raced by Gary and Mary West, Maximum Security retires with a record of 14-10-2-0 and earnings of $12,431,900 (including the Saudi Cup). It was announced at the beginning of 2020 that Coolmore had purchased half-interest in both his racing and breeding rights. He is available for inspection by breeders at Ashford.
