GSW Dennis’ Moment Retired to Leadem Farm in Arkansas

Graded stakes winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Dennis' Moment (Tiznow–Transplendid, by Elusive Quality) has been retired from racing and will stand the upcoming season at Leadem Farm near Leola, Arkansas. Owned by a syndicate led by Glen Hill Farm and brokered by Jay Goodwin, Dennis' Moment will stand for $2,500.

Bred by Tolo Thoroughbreds in Kentucky, the now-5-year-old was a $400,000 yearling purchase by Albaugh Family Racing at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Debuting at Churchill Downs in June at two, the Dale Romans trainee clipped heels and unseated his rider, then reappeared a month later to blow the doors off the competition by 19 1/4 lengths at Ellis Park, resulting in his 'Rising Star' moniker. Dennis' Moment quickly added the GIII Iroquois S. at Churchill and was sent to the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile as the odds-on favorite, only to stumble badly out of the gate and lose all chance. He was raced sparingly the next three seasons, winning an optional allowance at Keeneland at four prior to placing in the GIII Mr. Prospector S. at Gulfstream. Dennis' Moment retires with a record of 14-3-2-3 and earnings of $302,962.

Hailing from the family of French, U.S., and Japanese Grade I/Group 1 winner Golden Pheasant (Caro {Ire}), Dennis' Moment is out a granddaughter of MGSW Seewillo (Pleasant Colony). His own dam, Transplendid, sold for $1.4 million at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Golden Pal to Ashford After Third BC Win Attempt

Dual Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo–Lady Shipman, by Midshipman) will retire to Coolmore America's Ashford Stud after attempting to win his third consecutive Breeders' Cup race next week. The Wesley Ward pupil won the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2021 and the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2020. Owned by the partnership of Westerberg Limited, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Golden Pal will make his final career start in the Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Keeneland before standing alongside his sire at Ashford.

“We've followed Golden Pal's career closely and he's a very welcome addition to our roster,” said Ashford's Dermot Ryan. “He has speed to burn and like many of those by Uncle Mo, he's a very good-looking horse. I don't think any horse has come close to beating him here in the U.S. since he broke his maiden in the Skidmore S. [at two] and Uncle Mo has made a very good start as a sire of sires, so it's all good news!”

In a career spanning three years, Golden Pal is enjoying perhaps his best season yet as he opened the year with a visually impressive 4 3/4-length win in Keeneland's GII Shakertown S. and shipped to England for a rough trip in the G1 Kings Stand S. before returning stateside for back-to-back scores in Saratoga's GIII Troy S. and Keeneland's GII Woodford S., his second consecutive victory in that race. Overall, he's won eight black-type events–seven graded–and placed in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot. His current record stands at 12-8-2-0 with earnings of $1,815,131. All of his wins have come between five and 5 1/2 furlongs.

“This is the fastest of the fast,” said Wesley Ward after the Shakertown. Ward has made no secret about his feeling that Golden Pal is the best he has ever trained.

Medaglia d’Oro Again Tops Darley America’s 2023 Fees; Speaker’s Corner Retired

Perennial top sire Medaglia d'Oro once again heads Darley's Jonabell Farm roster for 2023 with his fee remaining at $100,000, the same amount as 2022.

Darley has also added two new stallions to the now-11 horse roster, including G1SW Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) and GISW Speaker's Corner (Street Sense). Mystic Guide, who won the 2021 G1 Dubai World Cup, was retired earlier this year. He will stand for a fee of $15,000 in his initial season at stud.

Speaker's Corner, a Godolphin homebred out of Tyburn Brook (Bernardini) who is bred on the same cross as fellow Darley stallion Maxfield, won the GI Carter H. in April with a dominating performance and a 114 Beyer Speed Figure. He also won this year's GII Gulfstream Park Mile S. and GIII Fred W. Hooper S. before finishing behind Flightline (Tapit) and Life Is Good (Into Mischief) in the GI Metropolitan H. and GII John A. Nerud S., respectively. He retires with a record of 13-6-2-2 and earnings of $739,963. Speaker's Corner will enter his first season at a fee of $20,000.

“We've been very fortunate in the last two years to have produced five high-level performers [Mystic Guide, Speaker's Corner, Essential Quality, Maxfield, and Cody's Wish] and it's even more gratifying that they are all homebreds,” said Darley Sales Manager Darren Fox. “Following last year's retirement of Essential Quality and Maxfield, to again be able to add more top-caliber horses is very, very exciting.”

Essential Quality and Maxfield, who both await their first foals in the spring, will remain at $75,000 and $40,000, respectively. Both had full books for 2022 in their first seasons. Street Sense will also remain at his 2022 fee of $75,000, while Midshipman will see a fee increase to $20,000.

“Optimism abounds currently in the Thoroughbred industry,” said Fox. “The sales are strong, purses are strong, and close to home, we experienced unprecedented demand during the 2022 booking season. With all these positives, only one of our stallions will see a fee increase for 2023 and that's Midshipman, who continues to go from strength to strength in his stud career.”

The Darley roster is rounded out by Nyquist at $55,000, Hard Spun at $35,000, Frosted at $10,000, and Enticed at $5,000.

Retirement plans for GI Forego S. winner and future Darley stallion Cody's Wish (Curlin) will be made after the Breeders' Cup.

Greatest Honour Retired to Spendthrift

Courtlandt Farm's Greatest Honour (Tapit–Tiffany's Honour, by Street Cry {Ire}), winner of Gulfstream's GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. and GIII Holy Bull S., has retired to stud at Spendthrift Farm and will stand the 2023 breeding season for a fee of $7,500 S&N.

“Greatest Honour has one of the best combinations of pedigree, looks and ability among the sons of Tapit that we've evaluated,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “Unfortunately, he came up with an injury in last year's Florida Derby as the odds-on favorite before the Triple Crown. Prior to that, he was so dominant at Gulfstream that he was in the top three along with Essential Quality and Life Is Good as the favorites for the Kentucky Derby in many of the early wagering pools.

Bred and owned by Don Adam's Courtlandt Farm, Greatest Honour retires with earnings of $446,440. He is out of Tiffany's Honour, a half-sister to Belmont S. winner Jazil and champion and Classic heroine Rags to Riches, in addition to Breeders' Cup victor Man of Iron. Greatest Honour's second dam, Better Than Honour, was the Broodmare of the Year in 2007.

“Greatest Honour's second dam is Better Than Honour who needs no introduction, and he's a big, strong son of Tapit that has 'classic' written all over him,” added Toffey. “Because he did not get to fulfill his tremendous potential on the track, we believe Greatest Honour offers a lot of value and upside now to breeders for $7,500.”

Trained by Shug McGaughey, Greatest Honour broke his maiden as a 2-year-old, to go on a three-race win streak at Gulfstream, including the Holy Bull followed a win in the Fountain of Youth.

Greatest Honour is available for inspection at Spendthrift.
