Gainesway Stable homebred Easy to Love (Empire Maker) debuts on a packed Saturday undercard at Gulfstream, and the half to Grade I winner Lukes Alley (Flower Alley) will be facing a field made up of mostly fellow firsters. Given half-siblings' successes on both surfaces–'TDN Rising Star' Arrifana (Curlin) was GSP and a stakes winner on dirt; Lukes Alley had graded wins on both turf and all-weather–plus a swift series of morning drills, the dirt shouldn't be a hindering factor. Todd Pletcher sends out $390,000 KEESEP buy Inventing (Union Rags) for the partnership of Repole Stables and Woodford Racing. She hails from the female family of good two-turn dirt females in GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Status (A.P. Indy), GISW and last year's GI Breeders' Cup Distaff runner-up Dunbar Road (Quality Road), and Private Mission (Into Mischief), who took last year's GIII Torrey Pines S. and GII Zenyatta S. Nest Much The Best In Demoiselle Stakes At Aqueduct

Nest overcame a wide trip on both turns to bid for the lead in the stretch of the Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. The 2-year-old daughter of Curlin took over inside the last sixteenth to win the Grade 2 stakes by a neck over Venti Valentine.

Sitting midpack early, Nest bided her time on the outside of horses as Magic Circle held a one-length lead, with Full Court Felicia and Venti Valentine in second and third down the backstretch at the Ozone Park, N.Y., racetrack. Through a first quarter in :25.05 and a half mile in :50.72, Magic Circle held on to that one-length lead heading into the far turn, as Irad Ortiz Jr. on Nest went four-wide into the stretch.

In the Aqueduct straight, Magic Circle, Venti Valentine, and Nest were three across, as Magic Circle tried to hold on under pressure from her challengers. Ortiz Jr. set Nest down for a drive, taking the lead inside the last sixteenth of a mile. At the wire, Nest was a neck in front of Venti Valentine, with Magic Circle holding on for third.

Nest paid$5.50, $3.10, and $2.20. Venti Valentine paid $5.40 and $3.70. Magic Circle paid $3.30.

“There have been some tight finishes and a little drama to go along with it, but I'm thankful to be on the right side of it all. She [Nest] was never able to take over and save much ground, but she got the job done. I'm obviously very happy to be on the winning end,” trainer Todd Pletcher said after the race. “We'll take her to Palm Beach Downs and map out a game plan with Mike [Repole] and the rest of the owners, but she'll get a freshening after this win.”

“She ran a good race today, we were looking forward to the distance and she got the job done today,” Irad Ortiz Jr. told the NYRA Press Office after the Demoiselle. “I knew the seven horse [Magic Circle] was inside and came out. I was just surprised that they claimed foul on me, honestly. I grabbed a hold of my filly, corrected her, went to the left hand and went straight. I didn't do anything to the other horse so I don't know why they claimed foul, but it is what it is.”

Bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables, Nest is out of the A.P. Indy mare Marion Ravenwood. She is trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Repole Stables, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, and Michael House. Consigned by Ashview Farm, Nest was purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Repole Stables for $350,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With her win in the G2 Demoiselle, the filly has two wins in three starts, for career earnings of $205,000. The victory earns the 2-year-old filly 10 points toward the 2022 Kentucky Oaks, with Venti Valentine receiving four points, Magic Circle two points, and Nostalgic one point.

Public Sector Gets Second Saratoga Turf Win In Saranac

Klaravich Stables' Public Sector followed up his win in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes with a one-length win over Repole Stable's Never Surprised in the Grade 3 Saranac Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Four weeks after his one-length win on the Saratoga turf, Public Sector broke sharply from the first post, Irad Ortiz, Jr. taking up position on the hedge as Never Surprised took the head in the opening furlong. Content to sit back in fourth, Public Sector moved off the hedge on the backstretch, as Never Surprised set fractions of :24.73 for the first quarter and :49.19 for the half-mile. On the far turn, Ortiz angled Public Sector through an opening between horses, going two wide entering the stretch.

Never Surprised maintained his lead into the Saratoga straight, but Public Sector made his bid for the front to his outside, easily passing the former frontrunner in the final furlong to win the G3 stakes by a length. Like the King was third.

Public Sector paid $4.40, $2.30, and $2.10. Never Surprised paid $2.80 and $2.40. Like the King paid $3.00.

“He broke well and Irad let them run a way a little bit. I thought maybe he would run on to the turn and make them go a little bit more, but he decided to take that first eighth of a mile that way where he just let them get a way a little bit, but quickly he scooted up into the pocket not too far away. From there, I thought we at least had a fair chance to win the race without knowing how he would do when he would draw alongside a really good horse” trainer Chad Brown said after the race.

“I got a perfect trip. We broke well from the one-hole and two horses had speed, so I sat off of them. When it was time to roll, I asked my horse and he was loaded. When he switched leads, he gave me a good turn-of-foot. He responded really well,” Irad Ortiz, Jr. told the NYRA Press Office after the Saranac.

Bred in England by The Kathryn Stud, the 3-year-old colt is by Kingman (GB) out of the Montjeu (IRE) mare Parle Moi (IRE). Public Sector was purchased by owner Klaravich Stables from consigner Clearwater Stud for $217,822 at the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. His win in the Saranac brings Public Sector to three wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of four wins in eight starts and career earnings of $378,600.

Practical Joke Colt Romps to Rising Star Debut

Practical Joke (Into Mischief) came into the juvenile sales season with plenty of hype and the first-crop Coolmore stallion has not disappointed in the sales ring or on the racetrack where his second winner romped home to a 'TDN Rising Star' debut at Belmont Park Saturday.

Sent off the 2-5 favorite, Wit was away a half-step slowly and trailed the field in the early going. But the dark bay colt made a powerful, sustained rally on the far turn and came four wide into the stretch, where he idled for a moment before bounding clear in the final furlong to graduate by six lengths. Keepcalmcarryon (Union Rags) was second.

Wit, a $575,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, is a half-brother to Barkley (Munnings), GSW, $368,425. His unraced dam Numero d'Oro (Afleet), who sold for $175,000 while in foal to Frosted at the 2017 Keeneland November sale, was not bred in 2020, but was bred to City of Light last year. She is a daughter of multiple stakes winner and multiple graded placed Numero Uno (Afleet) and is a half-sister to the dam of graded stakes winner and multiple Grade I placed Ivy Bell (Archarcharch).

Fillies by Practical Joke sold for $800,000 and $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale and for $750,000 at the OBS March sale. His first winner was Catchusifyoucan, a homebred for Tom Durant who graduated on debut at Lone Star Park May 22.
