Not This Time Filly Becomes Newest SW for Fast-Starting Freshman

Vacay dominated in her stakes debut Sunday to become her fast-starting freshman sire (by Giant’s Causeway)’s third black-type winner. A 1 3/4-length first up winner in the Belmont slop Oct. 16, she was backed down to favoritism and soon showed why. The dark bay broke with the pack from her outside five post and settled in second last while always off the fence. Scrubbed on to hold her position into the bend, she mounted a wide bid into a :45.89 half and bounded past rivals over the top en route to a convincing success.

“She’s a nice filly,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. “She looks like she can go a little further. I was trying to hold her position and as soon as we were turning for home, I asked her, and she took off.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher added, “I thought it was a very professional performance on her part. She didn’t break great in her first start, but broke better today. She finished up the way you would want one to. She’s a quality filly and it looks like she’ll handle more distance as well.

“We always liked her quite a bit. She gives me the impression she’s going to improve even more when we stretch her out a little bit.”

Pletcher said Vacay would likely remain in New York for the winter: “That’s the most likely plan. I’ll talk it over with the connections but I would like to take advantage of the New York-bred status.”

The winner has a yearling full-brother. Her dam was bred to Khozan for 2021.

‘Such A Great Tribute To The Whole Staff’: Pletcher Records 5,000th Win At Aqueduct

While he was at Keeneland for Friday's first day of the 37th Breeders' Cup World Championships, trainer Todd Pletcher earned the 5,000th victory of his career at Aqueduct when Repole Stable's Microsecond captured the seventh race

“It's such a great tribute to the whole staff, the whole team,” said Pletcher, who has sent out the earners of more than $395 million. “A lot of people are dedicated and put in a lot of hard work. But mainly it's about the horses. We've just been blessed to have so many good clients providing us with horses that are capable of performing well, and I'm proud of our team for developing them the best we can.”

Pletcher had horses entered in five Friday races at Keeneland, including three races in the Breeders' Cup.

“It would have been kind of cool to do it in a Breeders' Cup race,” he said about reaching the milestone. “But we've always said that our goal when we get a horse in is to do the very best we can. So every win counts, and we're happy to get it.”

The 53-year-old Pletcher, a seven-time Eclipse Award-winner, has saddled winners of five American Classics and 11 Breeders' Cup races as part of 161 total Grade 1 wins.

Pennsylvania-Bred Gun Runner Colt Tops Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale concluded Tuesday with figures on par with the 2019 renewal, with eight of the top 10 prices paid for yearlings bred in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York.

Hip 371, a colt from the first crop of Pegasus World Cup winner Gun Runner, sold for $270,000 during Tuesday's session to top the sale (video).

The chestnut colt was purchased by Lambe Bloodstock from the consignment of Becky Davis, agent. Hip 371 out of Stormy Tak, a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Lady Tak, making her a half-sister to Melody Lady, dam of this year's Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt winner Volatile. The sale topper was bred in Pennsylvania by Jon A. Marshall.

A pair of Maryland-bred colts sold for more than $200,000 during the second session to account for the sale's second- and third-highest prices. The first of these was Hip 451, a son of Flatter which sold for $250,000 to Bell Gable Stable from the consignment of Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent (video).

The dark bay or brown colt is out of Apple Cider, a More Than Ready daughter of Grade 2 winner Who Did It and Run, and half-sister to stakes winners Giant Run and American Victory. Hip 451 was bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds.

The third-highest price of the sale was paid for Hip 383, a son of Street Sense sold for $240,000 to West Bloodstock, agent for Repole and St. Elias Stables from the consignment of Chanceland Farm, agent (video). The bay colt is out of the Polish Numbers mare Tanca, who has seven winners from as many to race, including stakes winners Cordmaker, Las Setas, and Corvus. Hip 383 was bred in Maryland by Robert T. Manfuso and Kathryn M. Voss.

The sale's top filly was a daughter of Malibu Moon sold for $140,000 during Tuesday's session (video). Offered as Hip 541, the filly was purchased by Charles J. Zacney from the consignment of Candyland, agent. The bay filly is out of the unraced Street Cry mare Fire of Freedom, who has produced four winners to date, including multiple stakes placed Travel Advisory. Fire of Freedom is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Flat Fleet Feet. The top filly was bred in Maryland by Candyland Farm.

All told, 379 yearlings sold for a total of $9,161,200. The average was $24,172 and the median was $14,000; both figures were nearly identical to last year's results. The RNA rate was 21 percent, also on par with 2019 results.
