Kentucky Derby Contenders Major Fed, Necker Island Among Nominees To Oklahoma Derby

Trainer Michael Maker has given a nod to Remington Park for Mo Mosa to run in the Grade 3, $200,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sunday, Sept. 27.

He joins likely possibilities that include a couple of Kentucky Derby competitors – Major Fed and Necker Island – for this field looking for an Oklahoma Derby crown. A couple of other Kentucky Derby horses were nominated – Mr. Big News (third in Kentucky Derby) and NY Traffic (eighth in Kentucky Derby) – but it appears those two are working toward the Preakness, the final leg of this year's Triple Crown.

Dean Martini is expected to fly into Oklahoma City on Sunday, Sept. 20, to prepare for his run at the Oklahoma Derby. He, Shared Sense and Rowdy Yates are three horses that show an official workout since the Kentucky Derby and likely for the derby. The Oklahoma-bred Rowdy Yates has been stabled at Remington Park since late August.

Dean Martini, winner of the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown on June 27, breezed a half mile at Churchill Downs on Thursday, Sept. 17 and covered the distance in :48.4 seconds, the eighth fastest of 37 that day. Shared Sense, the winner of the Grade 3, $300,000 Indiana Derby at Indiana Grand on July 8, went five furlongs at Churchill Downs on Sept. 13, breezing in 1:00.4, the sixth fastest of 32 that worked the distance.

Rowdy Yates, with Oklahoma ties (L and N Racing, owners from Tulsa, Okla.) and the winner of the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile and $75,000 Don McNeill Stakes at Remington Park last year, got the bullet work at Remington on Sept. 13, going five furlongs in 1:01, the fastest of 12 that morning.

Here's a look at those most possible for the Oklahoma Derby of the 22 nominees:

Major Fed

Owned by Lloyd Madson Farms IV, trained by Gregory Foley. Went off 43-1 in the Kentucky Derby and had a troubled trip. He ran second to Shared Sense in the Indiana Derby, a strong closing fourth to Wells Bayou in the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby on March 21 at Fair Grounds and second in the Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds. Was ridden by James Graham in the Kentucky Derby. Graham rode Lone Sailor to an Oklahoma Derby win in 2018.

Necker Island

Owned by Raymond Daniels, Wayne Scherr and Will Harbut Racing, trained by Chris Hartman. Went off 49-1 in the Kentucky Derby and finished ninth after an eight-wide trip down the lane. Prior to the Kentucky Derby, he had finished third in the Indiana Derby to Shared Sense and third in the $200,000 Ellis Park Derby to Art Collector, who figured to be one of the favorites in the Kentucky Derby, but was scratched.

Shared Sense

Owned by Godolphin Racing, and trained by Brad Cox. This colt by Street Sense, out of the Bernardini mare Collective, won the Indiana Derby and has been first or second in five-of-nine starts lifetime. Has not been out since running fifth to Art Collector in the Ellis Park Derby.

Dean Martini

Owned by Raise the BAR Racing and David Bernsen, who also owns a computer wagering business in Point Loma, California. Trained by Tom Amoss. This 3-year-old gelding by Cairo Prince, out of the Friends Lake mare Soundwave, won the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown on June 27 with jockey James Graham aboard. He followed that with a sixth place run in the Ellis Park Derby.

Avant Garde

Owned by Gelfenstein Farm of Ocala, Fla., trained by Jesus Lander. This gelded son of Tonalist, out of the Afleet Alex mare Dancing Afleet, is riding a four-race win streak at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., but all four victories have come in lesser company than he would face in a stakes race.

Mo Mosa

Owned by Perry and Denise Martin, trained by Michael Maker. This colt by Uncle Mo, out of the Eskendereya mare Roughing, competed in both the Grade 2, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby and the Grade 1, $500,000 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark. He did not fare well in those two huge races, but would get into this race off a win by 4-1/4 lengths in first-level allowance-company Aug. 22 at Ellis Park in his last start.

Rowdy Yates

Owned by L and N of Tulsa, trained by Steve Asmussen, this colt by Morning Line, out of the Yes It's True mare Spring Station, has won 5-of-11 starts lifetime, four of those in stakes races. Other than his Oklahoma stakes wins, he also took home the $100,000 Ellis Park Juvenile in 2019 and the $100,000 Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park in January.

Remington Park features a five-date racing week, culminating with the Oklahoma Derby Day, Wednesday-Sunday, Sept. 23-27. The first race Wednesday through Saturday is at 7:07pm. The special Oklahoma Derby Day on Sunday, Sept. 27 begins at 3pm. All times are Central.

Floyd Wethey Rides 1,000th Winner Thursday At Remington Park

Jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr. won for the 1,000th time in his career Thursday night, winning the fourth race in wire-to-wire fashion aboard Elijah Anet at Remington Park.

Wethey gives credit for reaching the milestone to the support of those around him and riding for 14 years, relatively without injury.

“I started riding when I was 17 and I had always hoped to reach milestones like this,” said Wethey, who calls both Bluejacket, Okla. and Oklahoma City his homes. “It's a great milestone and not a whole lot of people do it. I've had a lot of help. I thank the good Lord that I have so many friends and family that support me.”

Wethey went straight to the lead in the irons of Elijah Anet and made every pole a winning one in the 5 1/2-furlong race for claiming $7,500 Oklahoma-bred horses, 3-years-old and older. They covered the distance with fractions of :21.98 seconds for the first quarter-mile, :45.48 for the half-mile and :57.93 for five furlongs before winning in a time of 1:04.64. The betting public sent the 4-year-old gelding by Silver City, out of the Anet mare Sister Anet, off at 5-2 odds and he paid $7.80 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.80 to show.

“I've ridden a lot of great horses that gave me thrills, winning Oklahoma Classics races and other stakes,” said Wethey. “I had Reel Chrome, Steal Your Face and Okie Ride and they all are very special. Hey, I even get attached to the claimers. Reel Chrome, she was tough as nails.”

He will certainly always remember one claimer, Elijah Anet.

“The meet has been great so far; (agent) Bubba (Wood) has gotten me on some good horses and I've been lucky enough to win a few,” he said. “Looking back, I've won two or three riding titles at Claremore (Will Rogers Downs) and three or four in Tulsa (Fair Meadows. I'm just going to keep on keeping on.”

Wethey began riding in 2007, winning 21 races his first year and $198,195. He quickly boosted that to 83 wins the next year with his horses winning $1,342,941. Twelve of the 14 years of riding his horses have surpassed $1 million in earnings. His biggest year came in 2018 when they banked $2,040,568. He has surpassed 100 wins in a year twice – 109 in 2009 and 103 in 2017.

Vic Padilla Named Full-Time Starter At Remington Park

A life in horse racing has allowed Vic Padilla to work in many capacities at the racetrack. Padilla can now add a new position to his resume as he has become only the third full-time starter in Remington Park history.

A mainstay as an assistant starter at Remington Park since 1998, Padilla has also worked as a valet in the jockeys' quarters, groomed horses, served as a jockey's agent and has also trained horses during his career. Growing up in Phoenix, Ariz., Padilla's parents trained horses at Turf Paradise. As a teenager, Padilla hoped to become a jockey. That plan was dashed by a growth spurt.

“I grew nine inches when I was 16, so that ended. Plus, my parents wanted me to finish high school, something they didn't do. I continued to gallop horses into my 30s before moving to the starting gate.”

Padilla was first an assistant starter, working in the gate with the horses to ensure the best beginning of a race possible, in 1980 at Turf Paradise. He has also worked at Canterbury Park in Minnesota, Oaklawn Park in Arkansas, Sam Houston Race Park in Houston and Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Becoming a starter was something Padilla was ready to accept. He also worked this summer's Lone Star Park season, his first as the full-time person hitting the button to open the starting gate doors.

Padilla, 58, resides in Edmond, Okla. with his wife Jodi.

Remington Park's 2020 Thoroughbred Season continues Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28 & 29, with the first race nightly at 7pm-Central.

Remington: 2020 Stakes Schedule To See Purse Reduction Of $820,000

The 2020 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season is set to begin a 67-date run on Friday, Aug. 21. The 32-race stakes schedule will also start on opening night with the $75,000 Governor's Cup, for older runners at 1-1/8 miles, serving as the feature.

The total purse money for the stakes schedule is $2,880,000, a reduction of $820,000 from the 2019 stakes. The lower structure is due to two-months of inactivity from mid-March to late-May this spring when Remington Park halted simulcast racing and casino gaming for health and safety measures at the height of Covid-19.

Remington Park's lone graded events top the billing for Oklahoma Derby Day on Sunday, Sept. 27. The Grade 3, $200,000 Oklahoma Derby and the Grade 3, $100,000 Remington Park Oaks head the lineup of eight stakes races on one of just two Sunday afternoon programs this season. Won in 2019 by Owendale, the Oklahoma Derby shares richest race honors at Remington Park. The Springboard Mile, the track's top event for 2-year-olds, also carries a $200,000 purse.

The marquee night for state-breds falls on Friday, Oct. 16 with the annual Oklahoma Classics. The series of divisional stakes races, worth more than $1,000,000, for Oklahoma-breds has been contested every year since 1993. The $175,000 Classics Cup tops the night and for the first time since 2016 will be won by a horse not named Shotgun Kowboy. A record-holding four-time winner of the Cup, millionaire Shotgun Kowboy has been retired to the farm of his breeder-owner-trainer, C.R. Trout, in Edmond, Okla.

The Springboard Mile leads a loaded afternoon of stakes racing on the final day of the season, Sunday, Dec. 20. The Springboard carries valuable qualifying points for the 2021 Kentucky Derby and has drawn quality fields, sending runners into the two most recent “Runs for the Roses” in 2018 (Combatant) and 2019 (Long Range Toddy).

The Remington Park turf course will be ready for action from opening night into November. There are seven stakes races slated over the grass with the $60,000 Remington Green and the $60,000 Ricks Memorial as the top open stakes races, both on the undercard on Oklahoma Derby Day. A pair of events on Oklahoma Classics night share the honors for richest turf stakes this season with the OKC Turf Classic and the Classics Distaff Turf both checking in at $130,000.

A total of 16 stakes are slated for Oklahoma-bred runners, beginning with a trio of events for state-breds over turf on Friday, Sept. 25. The Red Earth Stakes, the Bob Barry Memorial and the Remington Park Turf Sprint, all worth $70,000, start the run for Oklahoma-breds. The Jim Thorpe Stakes and Useeit Stakes, also worth $70,000, wrap up the state-bred stakes on the Springboard Mile undercard, Dec. 20.
