Twirling Candy Filly Walks All Over Regret Rivals

Walkathon got the jump on odds-on McKulick and kept finding in the lane to make the grade and stay unbeaten on gras while becoming jockey Julien Leparoux's 1000th winner at Churchill Downs.

Having finished second and fourth in her second and third starts, respectively, sprinting on the main track, Walkathon was runner-up in a rained-onto-Tapeta Gulfstream route Feb. 13. She resurfaced to graduate over the Keeneland turf Apr. 22, and was flattered when the next two finishers came back to earn their own diplomas. The Whitham homebred was coming off a first-level allowance tally going a sixteenth shorter here May 14.

Away on top from the rail, Walkathon was eventually reined in by Leparoux to sit second behind keyed-up longshot Lola Flo (Get Stormy). They crawled down the backside single file through a half in :48.46 and six furlongs in 1:12.91, and as the pacesetter dropped anchor midway around the home bend Walkathon quickly seized command. She was three or four lengths clear at the head of the stretch, and was not for catching from there.

Walkathon becomes the 15th graded stakes winner for her sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}), and the third out of a mare by Stroll, who also sired the dam of talented GISW Ollie's Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}). She traces her lineage back to Janis and Frank Whitham's most noteworthy of many standout runners, with Hall of Famer Bayako (Arg) as her third dam. Fort Larned (E Dubai), these connections' 2012 GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner, is a half to Walkathon's dam, herself a winner of the GIII Matron S. over this main track in 2017. After producing Walkathon in her first mating, Walkabout lost a Mendelssohn foal and was unsuccessfully bred to Omaha Beach thereafter. She produced a colt by Nyquist Apr. 25.

Honey I’m Good Goes Wire To Wire In Regret Stakes At Monmouth

When Honey I'm Good finished a tiring sixth in the Politely Stakes in her season debut on May 30 – just the second time she had failed to hit the board in her first 12 career starts – her connections simply drew a line through the race.

Saturday, it was easy to see why.

Despite breaking through the gate prior to the start, Honey I'm Good sped her way to a gate-to-wire victory in the $75,000 Regret Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., having just enough in reserve to hold off 2-5 favorite Bayerness by a neck.

For the 5-year-old daughter of Shackleford, it marked her sixth career victory and second lifetime stakes win. She flashed under the wire in a sharp 1:09.28 for the six furlongs over a muddy/sealed track.

“I don't think she cared for the track in her last start and she needed to settle in here a little bit to train,” said Mitch Dennison, who oversees Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen's division at Monmouth Park. “She has been working well here, calm and quiet, and that's important with her because she can be a nervous filly – as we saw when she broke through the gate before the start today.

“She was a little more nervous than we'd like her to be but she settled in and handled the track well.”

Honey I'm Good was caught almost immediately after she broke through the gate and then showed why she was so eager to get going.

She took pressure early from Bronx Beauty, with Bayerness sitting off those two, through an opening quarter of :22.29 and a half mile in :44.94. Bayerness passed Bronx Beauty in mid-term and then set her sights on Honey I'm Good.

But Honey I'm Good was able to last, returning $14.40 to win. It was another five lengths back to Bronx Beauty.

“I was worried when she broke through the gate,” said jockey Gerardo Corrales. “I knew I needed to break on top. That's where she is at her best and it was the best way to beat (Bayerness). My horse was very comfortable. I saw (Bayerness) coming at us late but my filly had enough left.”

Owned by Almost Heaven Stables, Honey I'm Good now has a 6-2-3 line from 13 career starts.

Gam’s Mission Gives Trainer Cherie DeVaux First Graded Victory In Regret

Carrying jockey Adam Beschizza and the yellow and black silks of Lazy F Ranch made famous by Hall of Fame gelding Forego in the 1970s, Gam's Mission rallied down the middle of the Churchill Downs turf course in Louisville, Ky., to win Saturday's Grade 3 Regret Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The win gave Cherie DeVaux her initial graded stakes victory since taking out her trainer's license in 2018.

A daughter of the Galileo stallion Noble Mission (a full brother to Frankel), Gam's Mission covered 1 1/8 miles on good turf in 1:51.02, winning by three-quarters of a length. Spanish Loveaffair, the 7-5 favorite, finished second after battling on the front end with Postnup for much of the race. Flown finished third, with Oyster Box fourth in the field of eight, followed by Barista, Munnyfor Ro, Line Dancing and Postnup. Saranya scratched.

Gam's Mission raced in fifth early after being bumped at the start by Postnup, who veered outwardly from the number six post position and then raced to the front to secure an early advantage over Spanish Loveaffair. Postnup went the opening quarter mile in :24.55 and the half in :49.56 under pressure from the favorite, who put Postnup away after six furlongs in 1:14.27.

Beschizza swung Gam's Mission out for a clear run at the top of the stretch, battled with Spanish Loveaffair and Flown inside the eighth pole after a mile in 1:38.90, then gradually edged away approaching the wire. Flown was beaten just a head for second.

The win was the third consecutive triumph for Gam's Mission, whose only defeat came at the hands of eventual G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Aunt Pearl in a Sept. 1, 2020, maiden race at Churchill Downs. She won her 2021 debut in a maiden race at Fair Grounds on March 21, then came back for an allowance victory at Churchill on May 8.

Gam's Mission was produced from the War Pass mare, Auntie Martha, a Lazy F Ranch homebred presumably named after Martha Gerry, who campaigned three-time Horse of the Year Forego and was honored as an Exemplar of Racing at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., just prior to her death in 2007. Gerry was the aunt of William S. Farish, who stood Noble Mission at his Lane's End prior to the horse's export to Japan.

Cornelia Corbett, the daughter of Martha Gerry, continues to race a handful of horses in the name of Lazy F Ranch. Her son, Rick, is a partner in Gam's Mission, the first horse he bought into, according to Bill Farish, son of the Lane's End owner.

Spanish Loveaffair Looks to Secure Graded Glory in Regret

Spanish Loveaffair (Karakontie {Jpn}) seeks her graded stakes badge in Saturday's GIII Regret S. at Churchill Downs. Crossing the line first in her seasonal bow in Gulfstream's GIII Herecomesthebride S. Feb. 27, she was disqualified and placed fourth for interference and finished a non-factor sixth next out in Keeneland's GII Appalachian S. Apr. 3.

Brendan Walsh saddles a live contender in Flown (Kitten's Joy). A third-out graduate at Keeneland in October, the chestnut was fifth in the Appalachian and missed by a neck to Gam's Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) in a Churchill allowance May 8.

Graham Motion sends out the well-bred Oyster Box (Tapit) for Gainesway Stable. Opening her account with a pair of wins, the chestnut was third in the GIII Florida Oaks Mar. 6 and checked in fourth last out in the Memories of Silver S. at Aqueduct Apr. 18.
