Hernandez, O’Neill Top Standings at Santa Anita Classic Meet

Juan Hernandez topped the riding standings and Doug O'Neill was the top trainer at Santa Anita's 46-day Classic Meet which concluded Sunday.

For Hernandez, a 32-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico, this was his fifth riding title at Santa Anita. He finished with 53 wins from 245 mounts and also led all jockeys in earnings with $3,683,348.

“I just want to say thank you to everybody for all the support,” Hernandez said. “All the owners, trainers and all the people on the backside. The grooms, the gallop boys, because they do a lot of hard work over there and I only do the easy part. I'm really happy and I'm going to try to keep working hard.”

O'Neill won the trainer's title with 30 wins from 163 starts. He finished one win ahead of Mark Glatt. This was O'Neill's ninth Santa Anita trainer's title and first since the 2021 Autumn Meet.

“It is all the result of just great owners, great horses, great staff and a lot of luck,” said O'Neill. “I'm just grateful to be at the Great Race Place. I'm grateful to work alongside a lot of great men and women that have the same passion that I do. I'm just happy to work alongside horses. It is truly an honor.”

Hronis Racing narrowly won the owner's title with 11 wins at the Classic Meet, one more than Reddam Racing.

GISW Slow Down Andy Retired from Racing

Last fall's GI Awesome Again S. winner Slow Down Andy (Nyquist–Edwina E, by Square Eddie) has reportedly suffered a sesamoid injury and has been retired from racing, according to a report in Daily Racing Form. The announcement was attributed to trainer Doug O'Neill, who also said the 5-year-old could possibly stand at stud this year.

A homebred for Paul and Zillah Reddam's Reddam Racing LLC, Slow Down Andy defeated Defunded (Dialed In) and Senor Buscador (Mineshaft)–both set to contest the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup on Saturday–in the Awesome Again but was sidelined with some filling in his ankle a few days after the race and missed the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

In addition to the Awesome Again, Slow Down Andy also won the GII Del Mar Derby, the GII Los Alamitos Futurity, and the GIII Sunland Park Derby. He also hit the board in another seven black-type events, including the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, the GI Pacific Classic, and the 2022 Awesome Again. The California-bred retires with a record of 14-5-4-3 and earnings of $1,276,600.

Hernandez, D’Amato, Reddam Among Hollywood Meet Leaders

Juan Hernandez, Phil D'Amato and Paul and Zillah Reddam's Reddam Racing emerged as the leaders in the jockey, trainer and owner divisions, respectively, during Santa Anita's Hollywood Meet, which concluded a 28-day run at the Los Angeles area oval Sunday, June 18.

With a Sunday three-timer, emerging talent Hernandez continued his stranglehold on the Southern California jockeys' premiership, as he booted home 42 winners during the meeting. Hernandez, whose closing-day victories included the ride aboard new 'TDN Rising Star' Muth (Good Magic), saluted in 10 added-money events, five more than Hector Berrios.

D'Amato sent out 17 winners at the Hollywood Meet, besting Doug O'Neill (15) and Mark Glatt (14). D'Amato was also the leading conditioner during the Classic meeting at the track and is now the owner of five Santa Anita training titles overall. His five stakes victories were one better than Richard Mandella and Bob Baffert.

Reddam Racing runners posted seven wins from 38 starters–two better than Hronis Racing LLC.

“We certainly want to thank our horseplayers, owners, trainers, jockeys, backstretch workers and the thousands of people that help us put on the show that is live racing,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager Nate Newby. “We are extremely proud of our safety record this year and we want to acknowledge this progress is the result of a true team effort from all stakeholders.”

With the winter and spring meetings in the books, officials at Santa Anita turn their attention to the fall and the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which pay another visit to Arcadia this coming November.

“Looking ahead to the fall, it is indeed a great honor to be able to host the Breeders' Cup for an 11th time and preparations will begin tomorrow,” said Newby. “We'll be offering our on-track fans a number of improvements, including a pair of brand new high resolution big screen televisions in the paddock which among many other things, will help to ensure the Great Race Place continues to look spectacular.”

Hometown Hero Wild On Ice Stuns In Sunland Derby

Once a year, a small track in New Mexico plays host to some big names as everyone chases points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby in the GIII Sunland Park Derby. While Tim Yakteen scratched his transfer in Fort Bragg (Tapit) Saturday, the field still included Bob Baffert's Hard to Figure (Hard Spun) and Steve Asmussen's How Did He Do That (Good Magic), as well as local Mine That Derby winner Henry Q (Blame). But for all the big connections, it was the longest shot on the board that took home the prize –Texas-bred Wild On Ice (Tapizar) at 35-1.

After a brief gate delay caused by One in Vermillion (Army Mule), the speed took off with top choices Hard to Figure and Henry Q taking it to one another from the opening strides. Wild On Ice was three wide with that pair into the first turn but wisely took back under jockey Ken Tohill to race with Low Expectations (Nyquist) in the second flight. The first quarter blitzed by in :20.58 but the top four stayed compact with two rivals distanced out the back.

Kept outside in the clear the whole way, Wild On Ice stayed right off the favorite's flank into the far turn and pounced as the speed began to fade with a quarter to run. Low Expectations kept him honest to the line but Wild On Ice was clearly best to win going away. The gelding, who is not currently nominated to the Triple Crown, picked up 50 points for his effort.

GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar, who we tragically lost in 2020, is best known for siring dual Eclipse champion Monomoy Girl. Wild On Ice becomes the 7th individual graded-stakes winners for his sire who has one more crop of 2-year-olds to race.
