Dr. Schivel Punches Breeders’ Cup Ticket in Bing Crosby

Sent off the 12-5 second favorite while facing his elders in Saturday's GI Bing Crosby S., a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint over course and distance in November, Dr. Schivel (Violence) jumped fairly from an outside gate and was outsprinted through the early stages, covering favored C Z Rocket (City Zip) from the second flight. Beginning to warm up to the task three-eighths out, Dr. Schivel was flushed four wide outside of Eight Rings (Empire Maker) into the lane, was put to a left-handed drive at the furlong grounds and outfinished Eight Rings for the victory. C Z Rocket raced far back into the final 2 1/2 furlongs and found his best stride too late. The race lost some of its luster when defending champion Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy)–a stablemate of Dr. Schivel's–was scratched, having grabbed a quarter training Friday.

“This is a real racehorse,” said winning trainer Mark Glatt. “He beat the olders today, and hopefully in November he'll be able to do it again.”

A maiden winner at third asking for former trainer Luis Mendez, Dr. Schivel added the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity before being given the balance of the year off. Programmed for a late-season sophomore campaign, he returned to action with a tough neck victory in a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance June 18.

With his Futurity victory late last summer, Dr. Schivel became the third of three Grade I winners in 2020 for his sire, joining 'TDN Rising Star' No Parole and Volatile. One of 31 stakes winners (11 grade) for Violence, he is the only black-type winner from a daughter of former Jeff Bonde trainee Mining for Money (Mining), a half-brother to MGSW Intrusion (Top Command), who was a maiden winner and stakes placed in two trips to the post. A half-sister to GI Clement L. Hirsch S. winner Ultra Blend (Richly Blended), Lil Nugget is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Barsini Red (Midshipman), did not produce a foal in 2020 or this year and was most recently bred to Anthony's Cross.

Maclean’s Music Firster Runs To Her Price Tag at Del Mar

DANCE TO THE MUSIC (f, 2, Maclean's Music–Beautified, by Congrats), apparently chilly-on-the-tote at 6-1, caught a flyer out of the gate and never gave her rivals a chance, streaking to a comfortable debut success Saturday at Del Mar. The scopey chestnut jumped right into the bridle and took them along at a good clip, covering the first couple of furlongs in a sharp :22.19. Galloping along on her own courage on the turn, Dance to the Music cut the corner into the lane, was a touch tardy in switching her legs, but took off when she did to take it by 4 3/4 lengths over Bicameral (Constitution). Walnut Stream Enterprises, a pinhooking partnership led by 2-year-old consignor Paul Sharp, snapped up the filly for a mere $40,000 at Keeneland September last fall. Seven months later, the long-striding chestnut was hammered down to Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal for $575,000 at OBS this past April after breezing in a bullet :10 flat. Dr. Schivel Returns a Winner at Santa Anita

DR. SCHIVEL (c, 3, Violence–Lil Nugget, by Mining for Money), winner of the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity when last seen at the races last September, made a promising return to action Friday afternoon, taking a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance in good style. Off at odds of 6-5 after touching 4-5 in the latter stages of the wagering, the bay colt was away from the one hole without incident and was settled in third position by Flavien Prat, as Canadian Pride (Creative Cause) set the pace inside of Speed Pass (Bodemeister). Going nicely in hand passing the quarter pole, Dr. Schivel was angled off the fence and into the two path in upper stretch, engaged the front-runner at the furlong grounds and fought his way past in the dying strides in an effort that will likely springboard him back into stakes company in the not-too-distant future. “We've actually been hoping he'd come back and run a race like this in his comeback race. There's a couple races for 3-year-olds at Saratoga in August and we've been planning on getting him back there,” the winning trainer said, referring to the GII Amsterdam S. Aug. 1 and the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. Aug. 28. “That kinda keeps us from stretching him out. There will be a time to stretch him out, but if we can take a shot at a Grade I at the end of August for 3-year-olds, that's gonna be right up his alley.”Formerly trained by Luis Mendez for his breeders William Branch and Arnold Hill, Dr. Schivel soundly defeated heavily favored Spielberg (Union Rags) by 5 3/4 lengths at Del Mar last August. Hip No. 381, a son of Quality Road consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Speedway Stables, LLC, for $1.5 million to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat at Tuesday's Under Tack session, is a half brother to stakes placed Coffee Crush out of graded stakes winner Wasted Tears, by Najran.

Hip No. 463, a daughter of Arrogate consigned by Mayberry Farm, Agent, was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $1 million. The gray or roan filly, whose eighth in :10 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Wednesday's under tack session, is out of graded stakes winner Amen Hallelujah by Montbrook, a daughter of stakes winner Sara's Success.

Mike Talla, West Point Thoroughbreds, L.E.B., Agent, paid $750,000 for Hip No. 490, a son of Arrogate consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. Donato Lanni, Agent for Frank Fletcher Racing, paid $490,000 for Hip No. 530, a son of Runhappy consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. The dark bay or brown colt, a half brother to graded stakes placed Hardworkcleanlivin out of Bible Belt, by Pulpit, breezed an eighth in a co-fastest :10 flat on Wednesday.

Hip No. 394, a daughter of Upstart consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was purchased by Spendthrift Farm LLC / Myracehorse.com for $450,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 last Tuesday, is out of Who'sbeeninmybed, by The Daddy, a half sister to graded stakes winner Mr. Bowling.

For the day, 181 horses brought a total of $21,056,500 compared with 158 selling for a total of $15,990,000 at last year's second session. The average price was $116,334, up 15% compared to $101,203 in 2021 while the median price was $47,000, compared with $55,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.5 percent; it was 19 percent last year.
