Real World Still Possible For World Cup

Although he beat just three home in the G1 Saudi Cup a fortnight ago, trainer Saeed bin Suroor said Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) could still stay on the dirt for the G1 Dubai World Cup on Mar. 26.

Godolphin's 5-year-old came alive in Britain last summer, winning the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot followed by three straight black-type races culminating in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein in October, and he kicked off his campaign with victory in the G2 Zabeel Mile at Meydan on Jan. 28. Real World ran on the dirt four times during last year's carnival and while he didn't win, he was placed three times, and bin Suroor said his Saudi Cup performance wasn't about an inability to handle dirt.

“He missed the break and from the start it did not look like he was going to win,” the trainer said. “That was clear to me and everyone else who saw it. He has come back after the race very good and he has exercised well. He is happy and healthy.

“He looks good, we will keep options open for him now. He will either go to the Dubai World Cup or the [G1] Dubai Turf, the nine-furlong race. I think we will make that decision a week before the race. I have to talk to Sheikh Mohammed about that.

Bin Suroor's Storm Damage (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) was the winner of the only non black-type race on Meydan's Super Saturday card last weekend, and the 4-year-old gelding looks ready to step up to pattern level.

“He is a nice horse,” said bin Suroor. “Last time Frankie [Dettori] rode him, he won over seven furlongs at Meydan on Super Saturday. He is a horse who could go over sprint trips or over a mile and could go for the Dubai Turf. The options are open for him.”

Real World Returns A Winner At Meydan

Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) enjoyed an unbeaten European summer campaign last year for Godolphin and trainer Saeed bin Suroor, and he made a seamless transition into his 4-year-old season on Friday with a comfortable win in Meydan's featured G2 Zabeel Mile.

A five-length debut winner at Chelmsford City at the back end of his 2-year-old season in 2020, Real World finished second in a Meydan conditions race just before the turn of the calendar before going on to run with credit at the carnival, finishing third at the handicap and listed levels before wrapping up that campaign with a fourth in a 2000-metre turf handicap.

Resurfacing at Royal Ascot, Real World won the one-mile Royal Hunt Cup and backed up four weeks later to take Newbury's Listed Steventon S. It was on to York for Real World after that to win the G3 Strensall S. over Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper), and the bay made it four on the bounce when beating Group 1 winner The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein over very soft ground at ParisLongchamp.

With Danny Tudhope deputizing for the Covid-stricken Frankie Dettori, Real World was swiftly away on the fence and soon took up a stalking position about a length and a half off the pacesetting Ajwad (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Real World appeared poised while in a pocket as they rounded the bend, but Ajwad soon peeled off the rail as he began to tire passing the quarter pole, leaving Real World room to roll up to the lead. At last put to a drive by Tudhope, Real World sprinted clear and hit the line 2 1/2-lengths the best as Alfareeq (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and One Ruler (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) put in mild rallies late.

Bin Suroor said post-race, “we'll keep the options open for the Group 1 races,” but that doesn't necessarily mean Real World will stay on the turf.

“He was about 90% ready,” the trainer added. “He ran well and finished his race well and we'll see how he goes in the future. He's entered in Saudi, Super Saturday and Dubai World Cup night between the dirt and turf. The reason we ran him on turf tonight was just to make him ready for the dirt races coming. It's unfair sometimes to run a horse who is not ready and run him on dirt and he gets beat and they say 'oh, he is not a dirt horse.' Sheikh Mohammed will decide [which race to go for].”

Pedigree Notes

Real World is the lone stakes winner thus far from 15 foals bred on the Dark Angel over Dubawi cross, which is also responsible for the G2 Norfolk S. third Silver Line (Ire). Real World is out of Nafura (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a dual-winning half-sister to the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin- winning sire Librettist (Danzig); the G1 Queen Anne S.-winning sire Dubai Destination (Kingmambo) and the multiple group winner Secret Number (GB) (Raven's Pass). It is the further family of G1 Prix Jean Luc Lagardere winner Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven's Pass) and multiple Group 1-winning sprinter Agnes World (Danzig). The Godolphin homebred Nafura is also the dam of last year's Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was placed in the prior year's G2 May Hill S. and G3 Sweet Solera S. Nafura's 3-year-old is the Saeed bin Suroor-trained colt Home City (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}), who won last year and was second in a conditions race during last week's carnival card. Nafura's 2021 foal died.

Dettori Positive For Covid

Frankie Dettori has tested positive for Covid-19 and will therefore miss his rides at Meydan on Friday as he self isolates.

“I won't be riding this weekend, as I've tested positive for Covid,” the jockey said in a video posted to Twitter. “I'm restricted in my room for a few days. I'm feeling a bit under the weather, but I've had my vaccine so we should survive. I'll keep you posted, but I'm not going to be doing much anyway.”

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G2 Zabeel Mile was among the highlights of Dettori's rides at Friday's carnival meeting. Danny Tudhope has now been named on last year's G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein winner.

Dubai Carnival: Pair Of Unbeaten Fillies Top Friday’s UAE 1,000 Guineas

Godolphin's Real World is just one of several stars on the third evening of the Dubai World Cup Carnival on Friday, Jan. 28. The card features Group 2 and four Listed races.

Saeed Bin Suroor's 5-year-old heads a strong field for the Group 2 Zabeel Mile over a mile on turf. Beaten in four starts on dirt here last season, the son of Dark Angel was a revelation when returning to Europe, winning four races on the bounce, culminating in the Gr2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Paris Longchamp in October.

“He's a different horse to the one we saw finishing placed three times last Carnival,” said Bin Suroor, who won the Zabeel Mile in 2008 with Third Set and 2012 with Do It All. “He really strengthened up and matured over the summer, progressing from handicaps to Group company. He's been off the track since October, but we always planned to start him here, before looking at the Neom Turf Cup or the Saudi Cup. The G1 Jebel Hatta on Super Saturday could also be an option.”

Real World, the mount of Frankie Dettori, is joined in the race by two other Godolphin trainees; Path Of Thunder and One Ruler, both trained by Charlie Appleby, who has won this race five times.

They finished first and sixth in the Zabeel Trophy three weeks ago and Appleby is confident of another big run from Path Of Thunder, saying: “He kicked off his Carnival by winning a Conditions race over a mile, so now he's forced himself into Group company. He should be competitive in the Zabeel Mile.”

Of One Ruler, whose classy European form saw him finish sixth in the Derby at Epsom, Appleby said: “He had an interrupted run when finishing sixth [behind Path Of Thunder], but he's come out of the race well.”

First Classic of season

The card also features the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas, in which the unbeaten Shahama has scared off much of the opposition. Trained by Fawzi Nass for owner KHK Racing, the daughter of Munnings overcame a muddy track in the Guineas Trial on New Year's Day to win by 2 1/2 lengths and looks hard to catch here.

However, Swedish-based Irish trainer Kahlil De Burca sends out his highly-regarded Uchcaihshravas, winner of her only start to date at Bro Park in Stockholm, Sweden.

“Fawzi's filly will be hard to beat, but we think our filly is special,” said De Burca, who will be saddling just his second runner in Dubai. “There isn't much between them on the times of the races they've won.”

Race eight, the Listed Dubai Sprint over six furlongs on the straight track, looks like one of the toughest races of the night for Pick Six players.

It features a raider from Australia, with Adelaide-based Will Clarken sending runners to the UAE for the first time. He saddles Parsifal here, who will be ridden by Caitlin Jones, seven races after she partners He's A Balter for the same trainer in the opening six-furlong Emaar Dubai Sprint Consolation race.

Among Parsifal's rivals is Man Of Promise, winner of this race a year ago for Appleby, who also runs G3 scorer Lazuli.

“He missed his intended start a couple of weeks ago after spiking a temperature”, said Appleby of Man Of Promise. “I didn't want to run him at less than 100 percent as he's a horse we think can be competitive at the Carnival. He's back on song now.”

On Lazuli, last seen finishing seventh in the G3 Troy Stakes at Saratoga in New York, he added: “Lazuli has a proper sprint profile. We're starting him over six on Friday to see whether he can book himself a slot in Saudi or go for one of the later sprints in Dubai.”

Competitive renewal of Zabeel Turf

The 1 1/4-mile Listed Zabeel Turf, race five, looks very competitive and features G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes winner Star Safari for Appleby. The 6-year-old warmed up for this assignment with a good second over 1 1/2 miles to Dubai Future in the Listed DRC Classic two weeks ago and will be happier back in distance.

The card is completed by two more dirt races. The seven-furlong Downtown Dubai Cup looks like a good opportunity for Doug Watson's Mubakker to follow up his six-furlong win here last month, while recent course winner Law Of Peace looks to have strong claims in the Graduate Stakes.
