The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: What’s The Deal With Zayat?

When attorneys representing Ahmed Zayat asked a U.S. bankruptcy court judge to let them drop out of the case because they allege the Eclipse Award-winning owner and breeder stopped paying them, some wondered why any law firm would represent an individual whose racing stable owed so much money to so many people.

We aren't experts on legal issues, so went to someone who is: Bob Heleringer, a Louisville, Ky., attorney and former state legislator who joins Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to discuss the Zayat case. (Full disclosure: Heleringer said he represents trainer Rudy Rodriguez, one of several trainers to whom Zayat Stables owes money, according to court documents.)

While Heleringer's expertise is in equine regulatory law, he has some interesting comments and observations about the Zayat bankruptcy and the $23-million lawsuit filed against him by MGG Investment Group alleging fraud and breach of contract on a loan.

Joe and Ray review the performance by Jolie Olimpica, the Woodbine Star of the Week who carried the red and white Fox Hill Farm colors of the late Rick Porter to victory in last week's Grade 2 Nassau Stakes.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Another Feather In Billy Koch’s Cap?

It's only week two of the Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss competition at Del Mar and I'm going to violate the first rule of holes: namely, when you're in one, stop digging.

I got myself into a hole last weekend when Rushie, the 3-1 third betting choice in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, ran an uninspiring sixth at the seaside track near San Diego, Calif. My mythical $100 wager ($70 win, $30 show) went up in smoke while my Beach Boss opponent, Scotty McKeever (@ScottyPick6) of Equinedge.com, was all in on the race winner, Express Train, his $100 win wager returning $390.

This week's Beach Boss challenger is Little Red Feather Racing founder Billy Koch, who will attempt to do the unthinkable and defeat me two years in a row.

I'm going to keep digging to get out of that first week hole, so I'm betting against Going Global, who will be gunning for her sixth consecutive win and fifth since being imported into the U.S. and joining Phil D'Amato's barn. She'll be the heavy favorite in a field of 11, draws a favorable inside post position and gets leading rider Flavien Prat.

Watch this week's Beach Boss video, hosted by Michelle Yu, to see where Billy and I land with our wagers.

And it's not too late to sign up, as the Beach Boss contest continues every day of the summer racing season. Bet a mythical $100 each day and at the end of the meet, the player with the largest bankroll will win two VIP tickets to this year's Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Sign up and get all the details here.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Perry Ouzts. Ageless Wonder

Like much of what he's done throughout a riding career that began in 1973, the occasion of jockey Perry Wayne Ouzts' 52,000th mount on July 20 got scant attention. It was just another day in the office for the 67-year-old, who recorded three wins that same afternoon at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ouzts now sits at 7,200 career victories, sixth on the all-time list and first among active riders.

No one has followed Ouzts' career closer than John Engelhardt, a writer, photographer, host of the Winning Ponies podcast and former publicist at River Downs, the Cincinnati track where Arkansas native Ouzts rode for so many years. (Belterra racetrack and casino was built where the old River Downs was located.)

Engelhardt joins publisher Ray Paulick (a 67-year-old who will not be doing any horseback riding) and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth (who got to know Ouzts when she was working at defunct Beulah Park) to share stories and answer some questions about the riding legend who was the subject of the Hennegan Brothers' Eclipse Award-winning documentary, “Ironman Perry Ouzts,”

Ray and Chelsea also review last weekend's Connaught Cup and the winner, Avie's Flatter, who earned Woodbine Star of the Week honors.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Sports Betting And Fixed Odds On Horses

Sports betting has shown steady growth across the United States in the three years since the Supreme Court overturned a federal ban on the activity, with more than $53 billion legally wagered on sports since June 2018.

More and more states are authorizing sports betting, with Canada close to approval as well. New Jersey lawmakers have recently passed legislation that would permit fixed odds wagering on horse racing, allowing bookmakers there to set betting prices on horses as they do on baseball, football and other sports.

Are there opportunities for horse racing to grow, even though the amount already being wagered on sports far exceeds horse racing's annual betting handle? While fixed odds wagering opens up new types of bets and guaranteed payoffs, could it  have unintended consequences on racing's traditional pari-mutuel pools or on the computer-assisted “whales” who get rebates in return for their betting volume?

To discuss these and other issues, Pat Cummings, executive director of the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation (www.racingthinktank.com), joins Ray Paulick and Joe Nevills in this week's edition of the Friday Show. Ray and Joe also review Woodbine's Star of the Week, LNJ Foxwoods' Boardwalk, a Constitution filly who won her first graded stakes last week in the Whimsical Stakes.
