The Friday Show: Hall Of Fame Slam Dunks … And One Notable Miss

In a busy news week – the aftermath of Saturday's Kentucky Derby and a look ahead to the May 15 Preakness Stakes – the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame unveiled its 2021 class of inductees: seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and 13-time champion steeplechase trainer Jack FIsher.

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick, news editor Chelsea Hackbarth and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills touch on those inductees and look ahead to the list of potential candidates for the 2022 Hall of Fame ballot – and Ray has a meltdown over one 2021 candidate who did not get enough votes for induction.

In his weekly Toast to Vino Rosso, Joe introduces us to another first-crop foal sired by Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic-winning son of Curlin. Finally, the team congratulates the ageless John Velazquez in our Star of the Week segment for his victories in the Kentucky Oaks and Derby and his ongoing commitment to his fellow riders through his work with the Jockeys' Guild and as a newly appointed member of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's standing committee on racetrack safety.

The Friday Show: AAEP’s 30 Years Of On Call Service To The Derby

It's been 30 years since the American Association of Equine Practitioners first began providing veterinary expertise to nationally televised horse races in the event of injury to a participant or the need to have questions answered relative to a horse's well being.

In this week's edition of The Friday Show, equine surgeon Dr. Alan Ruggles, who will be the AAEP's On Call veterinarian for this year's Kentucky Derby telecast on NBC Sports, provides some perspective on the program and the On Call vet's role in communicating important information to both the television audience and to reporters from around the world who are at Churchill Downs to cover this year's extravaganza. A partner at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., Ruggles also outlines some of the things going on behind the scenes to make racing as safe as possible for equine and human athletes alike. The Friday Show: Delayed Opening At Woodbine

Saturday was supposed to be opening day of the Thoroughbred meet at Woodbine racetrack near Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Instead, just as the 2020 season was halted prematurely by government order in the midst of a spike in the coronavirus pandemic, so too is the 2021 opening.

Jennifer Morrison, a longtime Ontario-based handicapper and turf writer (you can read her at www.canadianthoroughbred.com), joins publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills in this week's Friday Show to discuss how horsepeople are reacting to the latest setback – a lockdown, or stay-at-home order that has temporarily derailed live racing.

The Canadian lockdown comes at a time when more U.S. tracks are able to open to limited attendance and many Americans see light at the end of the dark COVID-19 tunnel.

We've also got our star of the week and a Toast to Vino Rosso that looks at another first-crop foal by the Breeders' Cup Classic-winning son of Curlin standing at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky.

The Friday Show Presented By Diamond B Farm’s Rowayton: Feeling Preppy

The Kentucky Derby is less than one month away and this weekend's Big Three prep races – the G2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, G2 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and G1 Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita – figure to sort out the leading contenders and help fill the Churchill Downs starting gate on May 1, as each race awards 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top four finishers.
