Dr. Schivel Returns a Winner at Santa Anita

DR. SCHIVEL (c, 3, Violence–Lil Nugget, by Mining for Money), winner of the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity when last seen at the races last September, made a promising return to action Friday afternoon, taking a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance in good style. Off at odds of 6-5 after touching 4-5 in the latter stages of the wagering, the bay colt was away from the one hole without incident and was settled in third position by Flavien Prat, as Canadian Pride (Creative Cause) set the pace inside of Speed Pass (Bodemeister). Going nicely in hand passing the quarter pole, Dr. Schivel was angled off the fence and into the two path in upper stretch, engaged the front-runner at the furlong grounds and fought his way past in the dying strides in an effort that will likely springboard him back into stakes company in the not-too-distant future. “We've actually been hoping he'd come back and run a race like this in his comeback race. There's a couple races for 3-year-olds at Saratoga in August and we've been planning on getting him back there,” the winning trainer said, referring to the GII Amsterdam S. Aug. 1 and the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. Aug. 28. “That kinda keeps us from stretching him out. There will be a time to stretch him out, but if we can take a shot at a Grade I at the end of August for 3-year-olds, that's gonna be right up his alley.”Formerly trained by Luis Mendez for his breeders William Branch and Arnold Hill, Dr. Schivel soundly defeated heavily favored Spielberg (Union Rags) by 5 3/4 lengths at Del Mar last August. Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal and Dean Reeves, but not Hill, were part of the new ownership group when Dr. Schivel validated 7-5 favoritism in the Futurity, but he was put away for the season thereafter and was having his first start for the Mark Glatt barn Friday afternoon. Lil Nugget, a half-sister to GISW Ultra Blend (Richly Blended), is the dam of Dr. Schivel's 2-year-old half-brother Barsini Red (Midshipman), third in a Cal-bred maiden allowance May 30 for Branch and Hill and Mendez. Quality Road Colt Tops OBS Spring Sale’s Second Session

Hip No. 381, a son of Quality Road consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Speedway Stables, LLC, for $1.5 million to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat at Tuesday's Under Tack session, is a half brother to stakes placed Coffee Crush out of graded stakes winner Wasted Tears, by Najran.

Hip No. 463, a daughter of Arrogate consigned by Mayberry Farm, Agent, was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $1 million. The gray or roan filly, whose eighth in :10 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Wednesday's under tack session, is out of graded stakes winner Amen Hallelujah by Montbrook, a daughter of stakes winner Sara's Success.

Mike Talla, West Point Thoroughbreds, L.E.B., Agent, paid $750,000 for Hip No. 490, a son of Arrogate consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in a co-fastest :10 flat on Wednesday, is a half brother to millionaire grade one stakes winner Heart to Heart out of Ask the Question, by Silver Deputy.

Hip No. 605, a son of Union Rags consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, went to Repole Stable, Inc. for $750,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked a quarter on Wednesday in :20 4/5, is a half brother to stakes placed Champagne Humor out of Champagne Ice, by Roman Ruler, a full sister to Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice.

Hip No. 594, a daughter of Curlin consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold to Norman W. Casse for $600,000. The chestnut filly, who worked a co-fastest eighth in :10 flat on Wednesday, is a half sister to stakes winner Checkered Past out of Catch the Flag, by A.P. Hip No. 512, a daughter of Maclean's Music consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, was purchased for $575,000 by Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal. The chestnut filly, whose eighth in :10 flat was Wednesday's co-fastest, is out of Beautified, by Congrats, a daughter of graded stakes winner Makeup Artist.

Hip No. 365, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Mike Ryan, Agent, for $500,000. The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is out of Versailles Song, by Unbridled's Song, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Versailles Treaty.

Donato Lanni, Agent for Frank Fletcher Racing, paid $490,000 for Hip No. 530, a son of Runhappy consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. The dark bay or brown colt, a half brother to graded stakes placed Hardworkcleanlivin out of Bible Belt, by Pulpit, breezed an eighth in a co-fastest :10 flat on Wednesday.

Hip No. 394, a daughter of Upstart consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was purchased by Spendthrift Farm LLC / Myracehorse.com for $450,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 last Tuesday, is out of Who'sbeeninmybed, by The Daddy, a half sister to graded stakes winner Mr. Bowling.

For the day, 181 horses brought a total of $21,056,500 compared with 158 selling for a total of $15,990,000 at last year's second session. The average price was $116,334, up 15% compared to $101,203 in 2021 while the median price was $47,000, compared with $55,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.5 percent; it was 19 percent last year.

Thoroughbred Owners Of California Announces 2020 Leading Owners

The Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) has announced the winners of its 2020 statistical awards for leading California owners. Hronis Racing LLC was leading owner in total purse earnings; Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC led all owners by number of California wins; Reddam Racing takes the award for most California starts; and Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC share the honor for most California stakes wins with LNJ Foxwoods – each garnering 7 stakes wins in 2020.

Hronis Racing runners earned a total of $1,783,800 in California last year, with 23 wins from 168 starts, including three stakes wins. Their top stakes runners included Santa Anita Handicap winner Combatant, Cistron, Chaos Theory, Higher Power, and Heywood's Beach.

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds had 34 wins from 171 California starts, for total earnings of $1,192,288. Their top runners included Keeper Ofthe Stars, Dynasty of Her Own, No Longer Silent, and Praise and Honor.

Reddam Racing runners made an impressive 199 starts in 2020, with 27 wins and total earnings of $1,719,181. Top Reddam runners included Play Chicken, An Eddie Surprise, Ambivalent, and Rookie Mistake.

Co-recipients of the award for most California stakes wins with 7 each, Red Baron's Barn LLC/Rancho Temescal LLC had many impressive stakes runners including River Boyne, Hariboux, Big Sweep, and Quattroelle. Co-recipient LNJ Foxwoods stakes winners included United, Astute, Dogtag, and Nasty.

All winners will be recognized at TOC's Annual Meetings at Del Mar Racetrack on Saturday, August 14th and at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday, October 23rd.

Grade 2 Winner Sharp Samurai Retired To Old Friends

Multiple Grade 2 winner Sharp Samurai has been retired from racing, and he will take up residence at Old Friends Equine Retirement in Georgetown, Ky., BloodHorse reports.

The 7-year-old First Samurai gelding finished his on-track career with earnings of $1,111,270, winning eight of 23 starts. A west-coast mainstay, his most notable triumphs came in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby, Twilight Derby, and City of Hope Mile Stakes, as well as the G3 La Jolla Handicap.

Sharp Samurai finished in the money in nine additional graded stakes races, including all five of his starts in 2020. Among them was a runner-up effort in last year's G1 Pacific Classic and a third in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland, his first race away from California.

Sharp Samurai was trained and co-owned by Mark Glatt for the partnership of Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal. The gelding was bred in Kentucky by Cudney Stables.
