Dance D’Oro Gets First Stakes Win In Rampart At Gulfstream

Dance d'Oro scored her first stakes victory Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., in the $100,000 Rampart, leading throughout in a non-threatening victory over Don't Get Khozy.

Winning jockey Emisael Jaramillo rode the 4-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro through comfortable early fractions in the one-mile stakes, leaving the filly with plenty of reserve in the stretch to register a two-length victory.

“We were comfortable in the front, good pace,” Jaramillo said. “When I asked her for run, she ran easy, because the first part of the race was easy for her.”

Dance d'Oro, trained by Ralph Nicks for owner Whisper Hill Farm LLC, was making her stakes debut in what was her 11th career race. Following a three-month layoff, the filly romped to a 9 1/4 length victory in a September 24 optional claiming race at Gulfstream, followed by a third-place effort in a handicap on Nov. 21.

“Her first race back was amazing, and maybe she bounced a little bit because she ran so hard,” Nicks said. “Today was another huge effort.”

Dance d'Oro raced to the front up the backstretch, followed by a non-menacing Gran Baby, and opened up on the field when she led the six-horse field into the stretch. Don't Get Khozy made a late run, but was no match for the winner. Allworthy, the 8-5 favorite, ducked in at the start out of the chute and finished third, 2 1/4 lengths behind the runner-up.

“It has to be maturity,” Nicks said of the filly's improvement. “She's always had talent, but it was hit and miss. She's getting a little more consistent.”

Nicks said he would likely keep Dance d'Oro in South Florida throughout Gulfstream's winter Championship Meet before making a decision on upcoming races.

“We'll stay here through the winter and see from there,” Nicks said.

Letruska Responds To Equipment Change With Victory In Rampart

St. George Stable's homebred filly Letruska shook off early pressure from Bajan Girl and opened up through the stretch to notch a popular front-running victory in Saturday's $100,000 Rampart Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The 42nd running of the one-mile Rampart for fillies and mares 3 and up was the first of five stakes, four graded, worth $575,000 in purses on an 11-race program headlined by the $200,000 Fort Lauderdale (G2), local prep for the $1-million Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1).

Ridden by Emisael Jaramillo for trainer Fausto Gutierrez and favored at 3-2 in a field of six, Letruska ($5) completed the distance in 1:35.03 over a fast main track for her 11th career win and second in graded stakes company this year following the 1 1/8-mile Shuvee (G3) Aug. 30 at Saratoga.

Breaking from post 5 and racing without blinkers for the first time in her career, the 4-year-old daughter of Super Saver was hustled to the lead and in front through a quarter-mile in 23.92 seconds and a half in 46.31 chased by Bajan Girl, fourth in last winter's Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) and a winner of her last two starts at Gulfstream Park West.

Letruska remained in command around the turn and gained separation once straightened for home as Delaware Oaks (G3) runner-up Dream Marie came with a run up the rail to edge Bajan Girl for second. Good Credence, 2020 Hurricane Bertie (G3) winner Sally's Curlin and Crumb Bun completed the order of finish.

Following her gate-to-wire win in the Shuvee, Letruska opened up a seven-length lead in the 1 1/8-mile Beldame (G2) Oct. 4 at Belmont Park before fading to fourth in her most recent start. She improved to 3-0 lifetime at Gulfstream, including wins in the June 27 Added Elegance and last December's Copa Invitacional del Caribe going 1 ¼ miles against males.

“I had a big question mark about today because after her last race in New York I decided to remove the blinkers. I came to the conclusion that all the time she runs she never saw the other horses,” Gutierrez said. “It's important how she responds when she feels the competition near her. It was a very good performance.”

Letruska won back-to-back Group 1 stakes in Mexico before making her U.S. debut in the Copa Invitacional. She also won a 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance in April at Oaklawn Park.

“We'll stay here and we'll decide what's possible,” Gutierrez said. “I think we'll stretch her out next time.”

Weekend Lineup: Gulfstream Swings Into Graded Stakes Action

The Gulfstream Park championship meet, whose first Saturday featured the popular Claiming Crown races on Dec. 5, kicks into high gear this weekend with an 11-race Saturday program with five stakes, four of them graded, that could showcase horses competing in the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track's Jan. 23 Pegasus World Cup and World Cup Turf.

Gulfstream is the only track offering American graded stakes this weekend, with all of their races available on TVG and your favorite ADW streaming service. Gulfstream's first post is 12:05 p.m., and remember that the track is sticking to estimated post times this meet whenever possible.

Here's a brief look at the four graded stakes at Gulfstream on Saturday (all times Eastern).

1:35 p.m. – $100,000 G3 Rampart

Rohan Chrichton, who won the training title at the recently concluded Gulfstream Park West meet, sends out Bajan Girl off two wide-margin victories at GP West in allowance/optional claiming company – both at one mile, the distance of the Rampart. Bajan Girl's last foray on the Gulfstream Park main track was in March when the Speightstown filly ran fourth behind Swiss Skydiver in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. Letruska, winner of the G3 Shuvee at Saratoga in August, won the Copa Invitacional del Caribe Stakes for her trainer, Fausto Gutierrez, last December at Gulfstream, after arriving from her home base in Mexico City, Mexico.

2:38 p.m. – Sugar Swirl G3

Cinnabunny will be making her first start for Brad Cox in this six-furlong test for fillies and mares, 3 and up, and that's enough to suggest taking a serious look at this daughter of Golden Lad who is coming off a five-length allowance/optional claiming victory at Parx when trained by Kathleen DeMasi. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be aboard. Golden Ami won her debut at Gulfstream in March for trainer Josie Carroll, then won her only start at Woodbine in Canada on Nov. 14. Red-hot Tyler Gaffalione rides. Lady's Island is always tough at Gulfstream, showing seven wins in 11 starts, and she demolished the field in this race last year, winning by 6 3/4 lengths.

4:09 p.m. – Harlan's Holiday G3

Most of the runners in this seven-horse field are known quantities in stakes races – including 2019 Harlan's Holiday runner-up Phat Man, 2019 G2 Jim Dandy winner Tax and 2019 G1 Pennsylvania Derby winner Math Wizard. The most intriguing entrant might be the Tapit colt Tatweej from the Todd Pletcher barn. Winner of three of four starts at Gulfstream up to one mile, Tatweej will be making his stakes debut and trying two turns for the first time. The Harlan's Holiday winner could have his trainer thinking Pegasus World Cup.

4:40 p.m. – Ft. Lauderdale G2

Halladay is unbeaten in three starts over the Hallandale lawn for Todd Pletcher and figures to be out winging under Luis Saez in this 1 1/8-mile contest as he was in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile last out when leading till inside the furlong pole. Factor This had a troubled trip in that same Breeders' Cup race and will be making his local debut for Brad Cox. Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz Jr. could have a say in the outcome with Delaware, as the son of Frankel looks for his first U.S. win in his fifth start. The Group 3 winner in France is coming off his strongest performance with a close third to Therapist in the Artie Schiller at Aqueduct Nov. 14.
