Kingman’s Kinross Prevails In The City of York

Marc Chan's 5-year-old gelding Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Ceilidh House {GB}, by Selkirk) was a neck shy of Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) in last month's G2 Lennox S. at Goodwood and exacted revenge on that rival with a first since annexing last year's renewal of that contest in Saturday's £400,000 G2 Sky Bet City of York S. on the Knavesmire. Positioned fourth through halfway, the 5-1 chance made smooth headway into contention in the straight and quickened smartly underneath the stands' side rail inside the final furlong to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths from Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}). Sandrine kept on well to finish 1 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

Golden Horn’s Haskoy Leads Home Juddmonte Exacta In The Galtres

Successful in a July 29 extended 12-furlong Wolverhampton novice event in her only prior start, Juddmonte's homebred 3-year-old filly Haskoy (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}–Natavia {GB} {SW-Eng}, by Nathaniel {Ire}) stepped forward to claim a career high on black-type bow in Thursday's Listed British EBF & Sir Henry Cecil Galtres S. at York. The January-foaled bay was positioned at the tail of the field after breaking from an outer gate. Bustled along with a half mile to go, the 13-2 chance made relentless headway racing in isolation on the far side inside the final quarter mile and stayed on in resolute fashion under a Ryan Moore drive to deny Time Lock (GB) (Frankel {GB}), another Juddmonte homebred representative, by a neck in the dying strides.

“That was magic and they are two good fillies,” commented Juddmonte's Barry Mahon. “The winner has always been good, but she had a bad injury last year. Ralph [Beckett] has liked her since he got her, but we didn't think she'd know enough today. Ryan [Moore] said the penny only dropped in the final furlong and William [Buick aboard Time Lock] said his filly didn't see the other one as she had more to give. Neither of them would be troubled by going further, but they've no fancy entries.”

Beckett added, “I'm not sure I've ever had one win a black-type race just 20 days after making its debut. I'm sure I might have as I've trained enough of this type, but I can't think of one. I thought she was very professional and we might have a look at the [G2] Park Hill at Doncaster now.”

Haskoy is the first of three foals produced by Listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies' Trial victrix Natavia (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), herself kin to G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Spinning Queen (GB) (Spinning World). Spinning Queen, in turn, is the dam of the stakes-winning duo Trade Commissioner (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Gallipot (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Another of Natavia's siblings, Amber Queen (Ire) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), produced GIII Jimmy Durante S. victrix Tezzaray (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) while the winner's third dam Lady Blackfoot (Ire) (Prince Tenderfoot) is responsible for three Grade I performers headed by GI Hollywood Derby-winning sire Labeeb (GB) (Lear Fan). Natavia has a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a weanling filly by Siyouni (Fr) to come.

Group 1 Winner Angel Bleu To Miss The Rest Of The Season With Injury

Marc Chan's Group 1 winner Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) will miss the rest of the season having picked up an injury in the G1 Qatar Sussex S., according to trainer Ralph Beckett who tweeted the news this morning. The grey requires surgery on a fetlock but is expected to be back in action in 2023.

Beckett said, “He ran very well at Glorious Goodwood, finishing a running-on fifth in the Sussex S. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury to his fetlock that needs surgery. This means that he is not going to run again in 2022. However, the injury is pretty minor and he should be back next year.”

A winner of the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood last July, the colt scooped a pair of French Group 1s in October of 2021–the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and the Criterium International. He resumed with a third in the G3 Greenham S. at Newbury on Apr. 16, and, although off the board in the June 14 G1 St James's Palace S., he was rounding back into form when fifth to Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the Sussex.

Westover To Have ‘A Good Rest’ Before Coming Back In The Autumn

Classic hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the end of June, will be freshened after his unplaced run in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. on Saturday. A winner of the G3 bet365 Classic Trial in his seasonal debut in April, the Juddmonte colourbearer ran third in the G1 Cazoo Derby for trainer Ralph Beckett. The bay set a contested pace in the King George.

“I think it just wasn't our day,” said Barry Mahon, general manager for Juddmonte. “As we had said prior to the race, we were a little nervous coming into it on the back of being to Epsom and the Curragh and it was a tight enough timescale with such a horse.

“He got a bit warm in the prelims and a little excited and then in the parade ring he got in behind Emily Upjohn (GB (Sea The Stars {Ire}), which wasn't ideal.

“Then the race just didn't pan out in our favour. There wasn't a lot of pace and Westover was a little bit keen so we got left in front. It just wasn't ideal and wasn't our day.

“He'll have a good rest now, I spoke to Ralph this morning and the horse has come out of it fine. He has a couple of little overreaches on his hind leg where maybe in the first furlong or two when he crossed over to the rail something caught him from behind, but all just superficial.”

A G1 St Leger bid at Doncaster is under consideration, as well as possible appearances in the G2 Prix Niel and G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Tromphe, but connections will take a patient approach.

“That's [the St Leger is] definitely on the agenda,” Mahon continued. “And also all the other middle-distance races such as the Prix Niel and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and whatever else, but the horse is going to tell us where and when.

“We'll give him a good rest now and freshen him up for the autumn. We probably won't even talk about a race for probably a month until we've seen how he is and then we'll start working towards something at that stage.

“He's trained great all season and one of his biggest attributes has been his calm, relaxed nature and we saw on Saturday that we'd probably just pushed him far enough and he was beginning to get warm beforehand, he just needs a rest now and we'll regroup for the autumn.”
