Tapit Leads Gainesway’s 2022 Stallion Roster At $185,000

Gainesway's 2022 stallion roster will be led by the world-renowned sire Tapit who will remain at $185,000.

Three-time Champion Sire Tapit is North America's leading sire of Grade 1 winners (27), Grade 1 performers (58), graded stakes winners (92), graded stakes horses (177), and stakes performers (284). Tapit continued to add to his historical resume throughout this past year.

Only months after Essential Quality won the Belmont Stakes to make Tapit the first stallion to sire four Belmont Stakes winners in over 100 years, Tapit took over as the all-time leading North American sire by progeny earnings. As a sire-of-sires, his top sons at stud include Constitution, Frosted and promising young sire Tapwrit. As a broodmare sire Tapit's daughters added another 3 Grade 1 winners in 2021, adding to an expanding list that already numbers 25 graded stakes winners.

The brilliantly fast McKinzie will stand for $30,000 in his second season at stud. Well supported in in his initial season the four-time Grade 1 winner bred 214 mares. Street Sense's best son McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in a career that saw him win top level races at two, three, and four. Included in those Grade 1 victories was registering an impressive ¼ Ragozin in the G1 Whitney Stakes.

He is joined by Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run as Gainesway stallions expecting their first foals in 2022. Hailing from the influential Danzig sire line, Spun to Run showed remarkable speed during his 3-year-old campaign, collecting three consecutive triple digit Beyers and five times ran a “0” on his Thoro-Graph chart. Spun to Run will stand for $10,000 in 2022.

A $1.2 million yearling himself, Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit has proven to be popular in the auction ring with nearly 20 percent of his first crop of yearlings bringing over 10 times his 2021 stud fee. Also having the most six-figure yearlings of any freshman sire at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale, Tapwrit's first crop is set to hit the track in 2022. A 2-year-old stakes winner out of the juvenile Grade 1 winner Appealing Zophie, Tapwrit will stand for $10,000.

Karakontie, standing for $10,000 in 2022, has continued to prove that he's one of the top third crop sires by percentage of stakes winners and graded stakes winners. A three-time Grade 1-winner, Karakontie's runners this year include dual-surface and multiple graded stakes winner Princess Grace and G2 Del Mar Derby winner None Above The Law, who has won four stakes on three different surfaces this year.

Anchor Down will stand for $5,000 in 2022. From limited books, the son of Tapit boasts 14 percent stakes horses in his first two crops of racing age. His top performers in 2021 include Grade 2-placed Captured Prize and stakes performers Lionessofbrittany, Swot Analysis, and Tesoro.

The Gainesway roster gains multiple Grade 1 winner Raging Bull in 2022 with the talented son of top international sire Dark Angel standing for $10,000 LFSN.

A $1.6-million earner, Raging Bull proved to be a consistently talented racehorse who competed at the top of his division over four racing seasons. He has made 18 consecutive graded stakes starts, winning or placing in nine of 14 Grade 1 events, including victories in the G1 Hollywood Derby, G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes, and this year's G1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes. Raging will be making his final career start in the Breeders' Cup Mile next month at Del Mar.

Gainesway’s 2022 Roster Led by Tapit

Gainesway's perennial leading sire Tapit (Pulpit–Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled) will once again head the farm's stallion roster and stud fees for the upcoming 2022 season. Tapit will remain at $185,000 live foal, stands and nurses. Currently among the top five North American stallions on the leading sires list of 2021, Tapit has three year-end leading sire titles and is North America's leading sire of Grade I winners with 27, Grade I performers with 58, graded stakes winners with 92, graded stakes horses with 177, and stakes performers with 284. Tapit leads all active sires in nearly every category, including progeny earnings of more than $175 million, which makes him the richest American stallion in history. He continues to scale new heights, with a record-tying fourth GI Belmont S. win this summer by 'TDN Rising Star' Essential Quality, who will be among the favorites in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

Four-time Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense–Runway Model, by Petionville), who bred 214 mares in his first book in 2021, will also hold at his fee of $30,000 for 2022. McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures–more than 60% of his career starts-and won Grade I races at two, three, and four.

Also slated to see his first foals in 2022 is GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run (Hard Spun–Yawkey Way, by Grand Slam), who gets a fee reduction from $12,500 in 2021 to $10,000 in 2022.

Previously announced as new to Gainesway for 2022 is MGISW Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley), who will make his final career start in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Mile. He will stand for $10,000.

Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein–Sun Is Up, by Sunday Silence), one of the top third-crop sires by percentage of stakes winners and graded stakes winners, will stand for $10,000 and will be joined in the Gainesway barn by two sons of Tapit in Tapwrit (Tapit–Appealing Zophie, by Successful Appeal) and Anchor Down (Tapit–Successful Outlook, by Orientate). Tapwrit, a $1.2-million yearling and GI Belmont S. winner, will have his first crop of 2-year-olds in 2022. Nearly 20% of his first-crop yearlings brought 10x his 2021 stud fee. Tapwrit will stand for $10,000. With his first crop of 3-year-olds this year, Anchor Down has 14% stakes horses and will stand for $5,000. Veteran Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet–Maggy Hawk, by Hawkster), who stands for a private fee, rounds out the Gainesway roster.

Raging Bull To Join Gainesway Stallion Roster In 2022

Gainesway Farm announced today they will stand multiple Grade 1 winner Raging Bull for the 2022 breeding season upon his retirement from racing. The son of Dark Angel, a perennial leading European sire of Sprinters and Milers, has earned over $1.6 million on the track and is pointed towards the Breeders' Cup Mile.

“Raging Bull is a knockout physically,” said Gainesway general manager Brian Graves. “His six triple digit Beyer speed figures and his performances over 14 Grade 1 events are impressive. His sire, Dark Angel, has become one of the most influential sires in international racing.”

A multiple Grade 1 winner, Raging Bull dominated the turf at three after winning his debut at Keeneland. From there, he scored victories in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes and G3 Saranac Stakes at Saratoga before capping his 3-year-old campaign with a determined victory in the G1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar.

At four, he made five starts, all in Grade 1 company, where he placed in the G1 Manhattan Stakes, G1 Fourstardave Handicap and Woodbine Mile.

Raging Bull returned at five to capture the G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes going away, while earning a 105 Beyer and stopping the clock in 1:32.73. He also placed in the G1 Maker's Mark Mile and G1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland.

This year, Raging Bull kicked off his season with a heroic victory in Keeneland's G1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes posting a 106 Beyer in a final time of 1:33.86.

“Raging Bull is the best looking horse I have ever trained,” said trainer Chad Brown. “He has run fast numbers at many different tracks, winning Grade 1s in three different years, the ultimate confirmation of incredible soundness.”

Out of the Mr. Greeley mare Rosa Bonheur, Raging Bull was bred by Dayton Investments Limited and foaled in France.

Raced by Peter M. Brant, Raging Bull has seven wins in 21 lifetime starts, his career spans 18 consecutive starts in graded stakes company, and has won or placed in nine of 14 Grade 1 events.

“I am extremely 'bullish' on his chances at stud. We are excited to be partnering with Gainesway on Raging Bull and will be supporting him strongly with our mares,” said Brant.

Raging Bull will enter stud in 2022 with an advertised fee of $10,000 LFSN.

Brown’s Bevy Of Breeders’ Cup Hopefuls Work At Belmont

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown breezed a number of his Breeders' Cup contenders Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., including Grade 1 Champagne-winner Jack Christopher, who worked a half-mile in :49.05 over Big Sandy.

Brown, a 15-time Breeders' Cup winner, said Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud, and Peter Brant's well-regarded Munnings chestnut is on target for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile on November 5 at Del Mar.

“He was great. He was in control the entire way and galloped out super. He came back good,” Brown said.

Brown said he's feeling good about his Breeders' Cup contingent, a number of which breezed over the inner turf Saturday at Belmont.

“A lot of them are coming into the race well,” Brown said. “These are tough races we're going in. The Breeders' Cup races are always that way but we have some shots in a number of races, so we'll see.”

Klaravich Stables' multiple Grade 1-winner Domestic Spending breezed five-eighths in 1:01.85 in company with Peter Brant's multiple Grade 1-winner Raging Bull.

“They went excellent this morning. Both horses are on target for the Breeders' Cup,” Brown said.

Domestic Spending, a 4-year-old Kingman gelding pointed to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf, completed his sophomore season with a win in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby in November at Del Mar in Del Mar, Calif.

He returned on May 1 to dead heat for victory with Colonel Liam in the Grade 1 Bourbon Turf Classic at Churchill Downs and completed a Grade 1 triple with a 2 3/4-length score over stablemate Tribhuvan in the Manhattan ahead of a closing second in the Grade 1 Mr. D on August 14 at Arlington Park.

“He breezed great today and galloped out strong. He's very fit,” Brown said.

Domestic Spending is one of three Breeders' Cup Turf contenders for Brown along with Tribhuvan and recent Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic-winner Rockemperor.

Brown said Tribhuvan [1:00.50] worked well this morning, traveling in company with Group 2-placed filly Nazuna [1:00.40].

Raging Bull, a 6-year-old son of Dark Angel, is pointed to the Breeders' Cup Mile following a closing third in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on September 18 which was contested over good going.

“He's looking for really fast ground and I expect to get that at Del Mar,” Brown said.

Brown noted that he would pre-enter Blowout, recent winner of the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., to the Mile.

Peter Brant's My Sister Nat [:49.23] and Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Wonder Stables, and Michael J. Caruso's Orglandes [:49.26] worked a half-mile in company over the inner turf.

My Sister Nat captured the 11-furlong Grade 3 Waya last out on October 3 at Belmont and will travel the same distance at Del Mar on November 6 in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

“The mile and three-eighths is a good trip for her,” Brown said.

Juddmonte's Pocket Square [1:02.02], also on target for the Filly and Mare Turf, worked five-eighths in company with Swift Thoroughbreds', Madaket Stables, and Wonder Stables Tamahere [1:02.11] over the inner turf.

Pocket Square, a winner of 5-of-9 starts, captured the Grade 3 Athenia at nine furlongs over good Belmont turf on September 25.

“The filly is training pretty good. I'm going to pre-enter her in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and see what it looks like,” Brown said. “Her last race really changed my mind about her. I thought she ran good at that distance and the way she galloped out steady.

“If she's good enough or not, I'm not sure,” he added. “It's not a definite she's going but I want to take a look at it and see.”

Tamahere, last-out winner of the Violet over yielding Monmouth Park turf on September 25, is pointed to next Saturday's Grade 2 Noble Damsel.

Klaravich Stables' Portfolio Company, a 2-year-old Kitten's Joy bay, breezed a half-mile in :49.41 in company with General Ken, a recent private purchase for an ownership group led by Louis Lazzinnaro.

A maiden winner, Portfolio Company finished second in both the Grade 3 With Anticipation in September at Saratoga and the Grade 2 Pilgrim last out on October 3 at Belmont. He is targeting the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

General Ken, a Violence juvenile, earned a 74 Beyer for a front-running 7 1/4-length maiden score traveling a mile and seventy yards over good Delaware Park turf.

Brown said General Ken will target the $100,000 Awad, a 1 1/16-mile turf test on October 31 at Belmont.

“The horse has settled in nicely and is training along well,” Brown said. “His one win looked impressive. He came to us in good shape, so we'll see. I liked his breeze on the turf today.”

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf contender Consumer Spending, last-out winner of the Selima at Laurel Park, worked a half-mile in :50 flat over the Belmont main track.

Brown also confirmed that Royal Flag, last-out winner of the Grade 2 Beldame, will target the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Brown will send out a trio of contenders for Sunday's Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine, led by defending champ Etoile along with Kalifornia Queen and Great Island.

Last year, a prominent Etoile captured the 10-furlong test over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course by a neck. The 5-year-old Siyouni mare has made just two starts this season, finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley in April at Keeneland ahead of a closing second to returning rival Mutamakina in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly at Woodbine.

“She seems to like it up there and it made a lot of sense to let her defend her title there,” Brown said. “She made a nice run last time. She's training well and she's fresh. I expect her to run well.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. will pilot Etoile from post 2.

Brown said that Kalifornia Queen, a closing third last out in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga, is training well ahead of her first Grade 1 appearance in North America.

“She certainly is [improving]. I think she's sitting on her best race,” Brown said.

Flavien Prat retains the mount from post 4.

Brown will also be represented by Great Island [post 8, Rafael Hernandez], who captured the Grade 3 Matchmaker two starts back over firm Monmouth turf.

The E.P. Taylor, slated as Race 8 at 4:37 p.m., also features a pair of starters for Belmont-based trainer Christophe Clement in Mutamakina [post 6, Dylan Davis] and La Dragontea [post 10, Joel Rosario].
