Emily Upjohn Out Of Yorkshire Oaks As Raclette Joins The Fray

The Andre Fabre-trained 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who represents Juddmonte, has been added to the Aug. 18 G1 Yorkshire Oaks field, bringing the total number of entries at this stage to 12. A homebred, the daughter of Grade I winner Emollient (Empire Maker) won the G2 Prix de Malleret on Bastille Day last out. John and Thady Gosden's Oaks runner-up Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is the latest defection.

Raclette will face the accomplished Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is riding a six-race winning streak–the last four at Group 1 level–for breeder Kirsten Rausing and trainer Sir Mark Prescott. The grey mare most recently captured the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on July 3.

“I see there is a little bit of rain forecast in Yorkshire but the fast ground wouldn't inconvenience me, so I would prefer it if it didn't rain,” said Prescott.

“She did win her German Group 1s with plenty of cut in the ground so she's very versatile. What doesn't suit the others will suit me.

“It's a real privilege to be allowed to train her as a 5-year-old, but Miss Rausing is in a very unusual position that she has so many of the family, that while one of them is doing so well on the racecourse, she can afford to keep racing.

“She is adding value to the other horse whereas most people couldn't do that.”

Rausing could also have another runner in her colours in the Knavesmire race, the Ralph Beckett-trained Albaflora (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}).

Some of the other possibles at this stage include G1 Irish Oaks heroine Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for Jessica Harrington, G1 Pretty Polly S. victress La Petite Coco (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) from the Paddy Twomey yard, and three from Ballydoyle led by G1 Oaks scorer Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Raclette Joins Yorkshire Oaks Cast

Group 2 winner Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) has been supplemented to the Aug. 18 G1 Yorkshire Oaks, according to trainer Andre Fabre. Named a 'TDN Rising Star' at Deauville last August, the bay won the Listed Prix Melisande at ParisLongchamp two starts back in June, and triumphed in the G2 Prix de Malleret in the colours of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah on July 14.

“She will be supplemented for the Yorkshire Oaks,” said Fabre. “She is beginning to mature now and the step up to 12 furlongs suited her last time out, she really stays well.

“I think she wants good ground–good to firm, fast ground is what she wants. Hopefully it will stay dry in August because sometimes for that meeting it can go soft.

“I don't think she will be a filly for the Arc this year as she is still a little bit weak. Perhaps next year when she is stronger.”

The trainer also had an update on Group 1 winner Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who was unplaced in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

“He had a valid excuse, he became unbalanced on the track and was pushed out of the race and another horse galloped into his heels,” said Fabre. “Saying that, he's been to Saint-Cloud before and disappointed, so he might just not like the course.

“He'll go for an Arc prep and then the Arc, he likes Longchamp so it makes sense to run him there.”

Frankel’s Raclette Edges Ahead In Thrilling Malleret

Fresh off a confidence-boosting triumph in last month's Listed Prix Melisande at ParisLongchamp, Juddmonte's homebred 3-year-old filly Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Emollient, by Empire Maker) continued her resurgence with a narrow victory, back at the Bois de Boulogne venue, in Thursday's G2 Prix de Malleret (Prix Le Bonbon) to set the stakes action rolling on Bastille Day. The April-foaled bay debuted with a 'TDN Rising Star' display at Deauville last August, closing her juvenile campaign with another win at Chantilly in September, but was off the board in her first two starts this term. She ran eighth in April's G3 Prix de la Grotte and fourth in May's Listed Prix Finlande, regaining her winning thread last time, and was usurped in the betting market as the holiday crowd marked G3 Prix de Royaumont victrix Baiykara (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) as the 4-5 pick. The eventual winner found a smooth rhythm stalking the tempo in second after the initial exchanges of the 12-furlong contest. Nudged along to challenge passing the quarter-mile marker, Raclette gained a slender advantage entering the final furlong and was ridden out to bravely hold the challenges on both sides for a career high. At the line, she was a head too good for the fast-closing Listed Prix de Thiberville winner Lastotchka (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), with Baiykara contributing to a thriller and finishing a short neck adrift in third.

“The Family will be delighted with this result,” commented Juddmonte's on-course representative after the win elevated the old guard of Andre Fabre and Olivier Peslier to a combined tally of 16 in the contest, Fabre extending his record haul to a round 10 and Peslier collecting a sixth edition. “Raclette is a smart filly and we have to congratulate Andre Fabre for the fantastic job he has done with this filly. Ever since she ran that first day, he always said the further she went the better she would be and all has gone as he predicted. We will see how she comes out of the race and Mr Fabre will discuss the future with the Family and [racing manager] Barry Mahon. There are plenty of opportunities for her both in France and abroad.”

Pedigree Notes

The best foal of her four-time Grade I-winning dam Emollient, Raclette is a full-sister to the stakes-placed Licence (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and a half-sister to War Front filly Peace Charter (GB), who was second in the G3 Juvenile Fillies Sprint S. at Naas and third in the G2 Balanchine S. The 'TDN Rising Star's juvenile full-sister has been named Ardent and has yet to race. Emollient was barren to Quality Road last year and her 2022 Into Mischief foal died. She returned to Claiborne sire War Front this spring.

The Classic-placed Hofburg (Tapit) is under the second dam, while the third dam, Glia (A.P. Indy), is a daughter of the outstanding blue hen Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector). Her black-type descendants are legion, with Group 1 winners Denebola (Storm Cat), Bago (Fr) (Nashwan) and Maxios (GB) part of her brood. The last two both found places at stud and currently make their homes in Japan and Ireland, respectively.

German 1000 Guineas The Focus On Sunday

All eyes are already on Royal Ascot, but before that catalogue of high-class encounters unfolds there is Classic action on Sunday with Dusseldorf hosting the G2 Wempe 102nd German 1000 Guineas. Tried in the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen, or German 2000 Guineas, Gestut Karlshof's Apr. 24 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial winner Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) was disappointing when only eighth in that May 22 Cologne feature and is back among her own sex with a point to prove. That will not be easy against the British raiders Jumbly (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Fast Attack (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), with the latter making her seasonal debut having last been seen winning the G3 Oh So Sharp S. at Newmarket in October.

Fabre Takes Aim

At ParisLongchamp, the 10-furlong G3 La Coupe sees some usual suspects and one not so much in the Wertheimers' progressive Kertez (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who is unbeaten in three starts at Saint-Cloud for the Andre Fabre yard in 2022. Fabre also pitches Juddmonte's 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) back into action in the card's Listed Prix Melisande over the same trip, with hope that the extra distance will prompt a revival of the sort of form that saw her inflict a heavy defeat on Welwal (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}) at Chantilly in September. In the Listed Prix Volterra also for fillies over a mile, the maestro of Chantilly unleashes Godolphin's unbeaten Sun Flare (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) who like Kertez has been confined to Saint-Cloud so far this term and she has to deal with Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani's 'TDN Rising Star' Osmose (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) from the Rouget stable.
