Frequent Flier: John Velazquez Named Jockey Of The Week After Graded Wins At Keeneland, Aqueduct

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez shuttled between Keeneland Race Course and Belmont at the Big A for racing engagements winning Grade 2 and Grade 3 stakes races which led to Jockey of the Week honors for October 10 through October 16. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, honors jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Logging frequent flyer miles is not unusual this time of year for Velazquez with major stakes races around the country and last week was an example. The week started at Keeneland Race Course on Wednesday with an allowance win for trainer H. Graham Motion. On Thursday, Velazquez rode for trainers Wesley Ward and Brendan Walsh.

On Friday at Keeneland, trainer H. Graham Motion gave a leg up to Velazquez on Highland Chief (IRE) in the G3 Sycamore Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Breaking from post position four in the field of 12, Highland Chief (IRE) raced close to the pace before slipping through an opening on the rail to take command as the field straightened for home, posting a one-length win over Temple in 2:28.87 and returning $15.32 for the win. The connections are considering the Breeders' Cup Turf as Highland Chief's next start.

“I just tried to stay right behind horses, save some ground and hope he would come running,” said Velazquez. “I was just looking for some sort of space down at the quarter pole and once I got it, he was there for me.”

Next, it was off to Belmont at the Big A on Saturday for the mount on Skims for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey in the G2 Sands Point for 3-year-old fillies. Breaking from the inside post in the field of eight, Skims sat just behind the leaders in third and outside of rival Vergara. Skims took over into the final turn while being chased by Vergara but there was no catching Skims who posted a one-length victory in 1:51.14 for the 1 1/8-mile turf test, returning $11.20 for the win.

It was a record-equaling third Sands Point win for Velazquez who won the inaugural running with Perfect Sting (1999) and six years later on Melhor Ainda.

It was back to Keeneland for mounts on Sunday's card and a win for trainer Wesley Ward in an allowance race.

Weekly statistics for Velazquez included five wins and $490,510 in total purse earnings.

Other contenders for Jockey of the Week were Jeiron Barbosa who won 10 races during the week, Hector I. Berrios who won a stakes race at Santa Anita, Tyler Gaffalione with a graded stakes win at Keeneland, and Flavien Prat who won the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge at Keeneland aboard Gina Romantica.

Remington Oaks Winner Faces Two-Time Title Defender In Oklahoma Classics Distaff

The $145,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff on Friday, Oct. 21 will feature a field of seven with the recent winner of the Grade 3 Remington Park Oaks, returning to Oklahoma-bred company to battle the two-time champion in the race.

Hits Pricey Legacy, an 11-1 upset winner of the Remington Park Oaks on Sept. 25, knocking off Grade 1 winner Juju's Map and seven others by two lengths, is back against Oklahoma-breds in the Distaff. Owned, trained and bred by C.R. Trout of Edmond, Okla., Hits Pricey Legacy is the even-money morning-line favorite coming off her graded stakes triumph. She is a perfect two-for-two this season at Remington Park, winning the restricted Oklahoma Stallion Stakes (filly division) on Sept. 9. The talented 3-year-old filly has never finished worse than third in her career with seven starts, four wins, two runner-up efforts and one third. She will face six others, including She's All Wolfe, the two-time defending champ in the Distaff.

Donnie Von Hemel has more wins in the Oklahoma Classics series than any other trainer with 29. He'll saddle She's All Wolfe for owner Dr. Robert Zoellner of Tulsa, trying to gain the 5-year-old mare her third consecutive win in the race. Only her mother, millionaire She's All In managed to win the Distaff at least that many times, finishing her career with four straight scores in the event. She's All Wolfe is a very close second in the morning-line odds at 6-5.

Like Hits Pricey Legacy, She's All Wolfe will come into the Distaff off a victory. She returned for her first action of the Remington Park season, in allowance company, beating Oklahoma-bred females going one mile, scoring by a 1-1/4 length. The win was her sixth career win over the Remington Park main track where she also has two seconds and one third. Her lifetime record of nine wins from 27 starts with six seconds and a pair of thirds has pocketed $638,860 into her bank account.

She's All Wolfe won the $200,000 Shawnee Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. on July 2. She has competed primarily in graded stakes events against older females throughout the year with her best effort a second in the Grade 3, $250,000 Bayakoa at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. in early February.

Other past winners of Classics races in the Distaff on Friday include She's Shiney, winner of the 2018 Lassie and Gotta See Red, winner of the 2020 Lassie.

The Distaff field, by post position and program order, with trainer, jockey and morning-line odds:

  1. She's Shiney: Alan Williams, Jose Medina, 12-1
  2. Canada Candy: Scott Young, Floyd Wethey, Jr., 20-1
  3. Gotta See Red: Kari Craddock, Leandro Goncalves, 10-1
  4. Hits Pricey Legacy: C.R. Trout, Jose Alvarez, 1-1 (morning-line favorite)
  5. Kachina: Kari Craddock, Jansen Melancon, 15-1
  6. Tesuque: Allen Dupuy, Gerardo Mora, 30-1
  7. She's All Wolfe: Donnie Von Hemel, Richard Eramia, 6-5

Total purses for Oklahoma Classics night reach $1,120,000 with seven other stakes events and two solid starter allowance stakes. The first race of the evening is 7:07pm with the Distaff set for race six at 9:32pm. The Distaff will begin an all-stakes Pick 5 that will conclude the program on Friday. All times are Central.

Tracked by more than 171,000 fans on Facebook and 10,600 Twitter followers, Remington Park has provided more than $304 Million to the State of Oklahoma general education fund since the opening of the casino in 2005. Located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District, Remington Park features the top Oklahoma-breds in racing on Oklahoma Classics Night, a million-dollar evening of stakes events on Friday, October 21. Thoroughbred racing continues through December 17 with simulcast racing daily, and a casino that is always open! Visit remingtonpark.com for more information.

Oklahoma Classics: Four Previous Winners Among Nine Entered In Classics Cup

The 30th edition of the Oklahoma Classics, the million-dollar night of stakes racing for the top Oklahoma-breds, is Friday, Oct. 21 at Remington Park. The richest event, the $175,000 Classics Cup, powered by FanDuel TV, has a field of nine and could be a wide-open affair.

Past Cup winners Dont Tell Noobody (2020) and Absaroka (2021) will test the 1-1/16 miles with others who have won Classics stakes events. Number One Dude, second in the Cup last year, won the Juvenile in 2020. Cowboy Mischief, winner of the Turf in 2019, tries the Cup this year. However, it is a horse returning to the main track surface that has a slight edge in the morning-line odds for the main event of the night.

That's Something finished second behind Number One Dude in the Red Earth Stakes here on Sept. 23, beaten just a neck in the race for Oklahoma-breds going 7-1/2 furlongs. While he handled the turf well, he moves back to the main track where 16 of his 18 career attempts have taken place, including three of his four lifetime wins. Owned, trained and bred in Oklahoma by Lynn Chleborad, That's Something has enjoyed nothing but wins or seconds since April. He has been tabbed the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the Cup while Number One Dude and Absaroka share the second morning-line spot, each with odds of 3-1.

“Really a tough race for making a morning line,” said Remington Park odds-maker Jerry Shottenkirk. “That's Something has won three of his last five and is two photo finishes away from having five straight Ws. He was pretty powerful on dirt two races back and just missed last time against Number One Dude on the turf. This race is back on the main track and those two should finish right together again. Defending champ Absaroka, despite being fifth last out, can be right there.”

Absaroka has only had one start this season, finishing fifth in an open-company allowance on Sept. 7. However, that was the first start for the 6-year-old since Dec. 17, 2021. Trainer C.R. Trout is confident the gelding by Flat Out will show up on Classics night.

“I like Absaroka,” said Trout of Edmond, Okla. “He's training well. We gave him a bunch of time off this summer. (In his opener), we had him fit but not quite tight enough to run.”

Number One Dude was second to Absaroka in the Cup last year and rallied to gain the close victory in the Red Earth Stakes in his first attempt over turf a few weeks ago. This will be just his fifth start of the year for owner Terry Westemeir and trainer Kari Craddock. He sandwiched two Oklahoma-bred company stakes wins in 2021, around his second in the Cup, scoring in the Oklahoma Stallion Stakes (colts and geldings division) and the Jim Thorpe Stakes.

The talent is deep for the Cup as past winner Dont Tell Noobody is 10-1 in the morning-line odds. The 5-year-old won the biggest race of the night in 2020 but has no victories since that effort. He was recently claimed back to the barn of Federico Villafranco for owner Danny Caldwell who campaigned him to the Cup win in 2020.

Cowboy Mischief finished fourth behind Number One Dude, That's Something and Tommyhawk in the Red Earth Stakes in September. Trained by Kenny Nolen for owner Kelly Thiesing, Cowboy Mischief will be making just his second start of the year and is 12-1 in the morning line. He has finished in the top three in eight of his nine attempts over the Remington Park main track in his career with three of his five lifetime wins on that surface.

The Classics Cup is set as the ninth of 10 races on Friday. The first race is 7:07pm while the Cup leaves the gate at 11:05pm. All times are Central. Here is the field by post position and program number, with trainer, jockey and morning-line odds:

  1. Beckett's Luckyday: Pat Swan, Alfredo Triana, Jr., 8-1
  2. Cherokee Legacy: Scott Young, Floyd Wethey, Jr. 15-1
  3. Number One Dude: Kari Craddock, Leandro Goncalves, 3-1
  4. Frigerator: Sue Hunt, Stewart Elliott, 20-1
  5. Absaroka: C.R. Trout, David Cabrera, 3-1
  6. That's Something: Lynn Chleborad, Luis Quinonez, 5-2 (morning-line favorite)
  7. Dont Tell Noobody: Federico Villafranco, Weston Hamilton, 10-1
  8. Cowboy Mischief: Kenny Nolen, Richard Eramia, 12-1
  9. Cruisin Cue: Carlos Padilla, Gerardo Mora, 10-1

Total purses for Oklahoma Classics night reach $1,120,000 with seven other stakes events and two solid starter allowance stakes.

Richiesgotgame Upsets The Pizza Man Stakes; Block To Send Out Another Favorite In Powerless

Despite a rainy week at Hawthorne that saw Friday's races taken off the turf as well as a portion of the Saturday races, The Pizza Man Stakes remained on the turf course and produced a thriller. The $75,000 race for Illinois-bred turf runners was contested at 1 1/16 miles over a course listed as yielding as all seven entrants stayed in to run.

Following the Illini Princess Stakes the week prior, which was won by Chris Block trained Trail Ridge Road, Block was looking for back to back weekends of stakes wins at Hawthorne as Another Mystery was sent off as the 3-5 favorite in The Pizza Man.

A tightly bunched field raced through the opening turn as Readthecliffnotes was pushed through a quick opening quarter of :23.59 by Power Through and Temper Tantrum. Richiesgotgame sat just off the early pace while Another Mystery settled at the rear of the field, only four lengths off the lead. After backing down the pace a bit to pass the half in :48.09 and three quarters in 1:12.22, the field stacked up to challenge Readthecliffnotes at the top of stretch.  Mid-stretch, Readthecliffnotes was all out to hold on as Temper Tantrum and Power Through kept things tight upfront. Just behind the leaders, both Jareth Loveberry and Richiesgotgame, along with Orlando Mojica aboard Another Mystery, desperately looked for racing room.

Late in the lane a small hole opened as Loveberry pushed Richiesgotgame through. Mojica waited and angled Another Mystery out late but Richiesgotgame got the jump and held off Another Mystery to win by a head. Another Mystery was a neck in front of a game Readthecliffnotes. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:42.63.

Owned by Patricia's Hope LLC and Richard Ravin and trained by Larry Rivelli, Richiesgotgame returned $10.00, $3.20 and $2.60. Another Mystery came back $2.10 and $2.10, while Readthecliffnotes returned $5.20 to show.  The win in The Pizza Man Stakes was the second stakes victory for Richiesgotgame and seventh lifetime win from 19 starts. He earned $45,000 for the win, boosting his lifetime earnings to $292,144.

This Saturday, Illinois-bred female sprinters take to the main track in the 6 ½ furlong Powerless Stakes. A field of seven has been entered as Chris Block once again sends out the likely favorite. Owned and bred by Richard Perkins, Oeuvre is the 8-5 morning line choice in the Powerless. A winner of six of 12 lifetime starts, Oeuvre has never been worse than second in seven starts at Hawthorne. Breaking her maiden over the track by 12 lengths as a two-year-old, Oeuvre was second to Purr Sea in a pair of juvenile stakes at Hawthorne to close out 2021. Away from the track for six months, Ouevre returned in May to easily defeat state-bred allowance runners on May 15 and did so again on June 11. Oeuvre showed her versatility in June 24, moving to the turf and taking an open turf sprint to close out the spring Hawthorne season. Following a win at Colonial, Ouevre battled to a solid third-place finish in the $500,000 Music City at Kentucky Downs on September 13. She comes into the Powerless off another strong open allowance win at Hawthorne on October 2.

The top threat to Oeuvre in the Powerless is Purr Sea from the barn of trainer Michele Boyce. After breaking her maiden at first asking last summer, Purr Sea ran a game third in the Arlington Washington Lassie last August. She got the best of Oeuvre twice last fall at Hawthorne, defeating her in the Showtime Deb and the Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante. Much like Oeuvre, Purr Sea took six months away from the races before returning at Horseshoe Indianapolis in May. Grabbing a victory and pair of runner-up efforts in five starts in Indiana, Purr Sea comes into the Powerless off a strong victory against open allowance runners at Hawthorne on October 8.

The field for the Powerless Stakes:
