Churchill’s Stars Of Tomorrow: Graded Stakes-Placed Jace’s Road Tops Sunday’s Street Sense

Albaugh Family Stables and West Point Thoroughbreds' Jace's Road, an impressive debut winner and recent third-place finisher in the $300,000 Iroquois Stakes (Grade 3), tops a competitive field of 11 colts that were entered in Sunday's featured 10th running of the $200,000 Street Sense (G3) as part of “Stars of Tomorrow I” at Churchill Downs.

Sunday's opening day of the 19-day Fall Meet stand will get underway at 1 p.m. (all times Eastern) and showcase all 2-year-old races. The 11-race program also features the $200,000 Rags to Riches for fillies run at 1 1/16 miles in Race 6. The Street Sense will go as Race 10 at 5:35 p.m.

Inaugurated in 2005, Churchill Downs' Stars of Tomorrow programs have helped launch the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, including more than 50 Grade I winners led by Horse of the Year champions Gun Runner (2017) and Rachel Alexandra (2009); Kentucky Derby winners Super Saver (2010) and Mandaloun (2021); and Longines Kentucky Oaks winners Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012), Monomoy Girl (2018) and Secret Oath (2022). Many of the horses running Sunday will be prepping for “Stars of Tomorrow II” which will be staged four weeks later on Saturday, Nov. 26.

Jace's Road won his career debut at Ellis Park by 6 ¼ lengths for trainer Brad Cox. He returned in the Iroquois where he was defeated 1 ½ lengths by $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) contender Curly Jack and 54-1 longshot and fellow Street Sense rival Honed. Since the Iroquois, Jace's Road has worked three times at Churchill Downs with Florent Geroux in the saddle. Jace's Road's co-owner, Albaugh Family Stables, won last year's Street Sense with the Dale Romans-trained Howling Time.

Geroux will have the mount on Jace's Road in the Street Sense and the duo will break from post No. 3.

There were 10 rivals that entered to face Jace's Road in the Street Sense including With Anticipation Stakes (G3) winner Boppy O, Ellis Park Juvenile winner Top Recruit, and Shakopee Juvenile winner Two Phil's.

Here is the complete field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

War At Sea Heads Wide-Open Field Of Nine In Twilight Derby

With four consecutive top efforts going two turns on grass to his credit, War At Sea heads a wide-open field of nine sophomores going a mile and one eighth on turf in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita.

Third, beaten one length in the G2 Del Mar Derby under the same conditions Sept. 3, War At Sea had a three-game winning streak snapped dating back to a one mile maiden turf win here on March 5. A three quarter length winner over well regarded Cabo Spirit in the ungraded Cinema Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on grass two starts back June 4, War At Sea, a Kentucky-bred colt by War Front out of the Street Cry mare Serene Melody, has three wins and as many thirds from six starts this year as he seeks his first graded stakes victory.

Trained by Ron Ellis and owned by Doubledown Stables, Inc., War At Sea will be ridden for the fifth consecutive time by Mike Smith. With an overall mark of 9-3-0-4, War At Sea, who was purchased out of a Florida 2-year-old in training sale a year ago March for $525,000, has earnings of $206,780.

Trained by George Papaprodromou, Cabo Spirit, who took the G3 La Jolla Handicap two starts back at 1 1/16 miles on turf, finished a disappointing fifth in the Del Mar Derby as he flattened out to be beaten by 2 ½ lengths.

Owned by Kretz Racing, LLC, Cabo Spirit, a 3-year-old gelding by Pioneerof the Nile, was purchased for $575,000 out of the Ocala Breeders April 2021, 2-year-old in Training Sale. With Joe Bravo set to ride back for the sixth consecutive time, Cabo Spirit brings earnings of $318,560 from an overall mark of 14-3-3-3.

Millionaire Going Global Making Final Start Of Her Career In Saturday’s Goldikova

Irish-bred Going Global and French-bred Avenue de France will meet for the third consecutive time as they head a field of six fillies and mares three and up in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Goldikova Stakes at one mile over the Santa Anita turf.

One of three graded stakes and seven added money races overall, the Goldikova, named for the brilliant French-bred mare who won the Breeders' Cup Mile versus males three consecutive years from 2008 through 2010 and who was a two-time Eclipse Award winner in North American, has been carded as race three on a 10-race program Saturday.

Second, beaten a half length by Avenue de France as the 1-2 favorite going a mile and one eighth on turf in Del Mar's G2 John C. Mabee Stakes Sept. 10, Going Global, who defeated Avenue de France by three lengths in the G2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap two starts back, will hope to benefit from the shorter distance of one mile on Saturday in what will be her career finale.

A 4-year-old filly and one of two Phil D'Amato entrants, Going Global, the defending Goldikova champ, is a perfect two for two at one mile over the Santa Anita turf and is five for six over the Arcadia lawn.

Ridden patiently by regular rider Umberto Rispoli in the Mabee at Del Mar, Avenue de France, in a bold move three furlongs from home, got the jump on Going Global, who could never get back on terms with the winner, including in the run-out well past the wire.

Owned by CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gevertz, Michael Nentwig and Ray Pagano, Going Global, who was one for four in her native Ireland, has flourished in D'Amato's care, winning eight of her 12 starts here, seven of them in graded stakes. With an overall mark of 16-9-2-1, she has earnings of $1,017,292.

A winner of the G1 Del Mar Oaks seven starts back, Going Global will be making her final start on Saturday, according to D'Amato.

“Hopefully, we can send her out a winner,” said D'Amato, who said this past Saturday that Going Global will go through the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton's “Night of the Stars” Sale at Keeneland on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Trained by Leonard Powell, Avenue de France's connections will hope to make it two wins from three engagements with Going Global on Saturday. Off at 10-1 in the John C. Mabee, Juan Hernandez, who has won two of his three engagements with Avenue de France, took his best shot heading into the far turn and it paid off as she notched the biggest win of her career.

A 5-year-old mare who would be best suited lagging back off of a fast pace, Avenue de France made a tremendous run from far back in the one mile turf Osunitas Stakes three starts back on July 23. With Powell at the developmental controls, Avenue de France appears to be at the peak of her powers as she approaches her 23rd career start and her 21st in Powell's care.

Owned by the Benowitz Family Trust, Convergence Stables, LLC, Madaket Stables, LLC, Wonder Stables and Mathilde Powell, Avenue de France is a five-time stakes winner and is 8-2-5 overall with earnings of $525,066.
