Bipartisanship Ships West For Motion To Win Kathryn Crosby Stakes

The eastern shipper Bipartisanship brought her running shoes with her and put them to good use Saturday at Del Mar as she came rolling in the lane to capture the afternoon's feature, the $83,700 Kathryn Crosby Stakes on the turf course. She ran the mile distance in 1:37.27 at the seaside oval north of San Diego, Calif.

The winner, a 4-year-old British-bred daughter of the Dansili sire Bated Breath, races in the silks of Fortune Racing LLC and is trained by top eastern conditioner H. Graham Motion, who has dabbled and then some at Del Mar before. This was his eighth local stakes tally.

Finishing a length behind Bipartisanship in the filly/mare test was Hronis Racing or West Point Thoroughbreds' Gold for Kitten, who was a neck better than Marsha Naify's Royal Address.

Bipartisanship was handled by Juan Hernandez, who also was the winner of the Let It Ride overnight stakes on Del Mar's opening day card Friday and is currently the meet's leading rider. He was Del Mar's top rider both this past summer and last fall.

The overnight stakes paid $49,320 to the winning connection and pushed their filly's bankroll up to $175,093. It was her third win in eight U.S. starts after failing to click in four outings in Ireland.

Bipartisanship returned $8.40, $4.80 and $3.60. Gold for Kitten paid $10.20 and $7.00, while Royal Address returned $7.80 to show.

Racing at Del Mar continues on Sunday with a nine-race program starting at 12:30 p.m.

JUAN HERNANDEZ (Bipartisanship, winner) – “Alice (assistant trainer Alice Clapham) told me that she is a real straightforward filly; that you could pretty much do whatever you wanted with her, that she'd put herself in the race. She pretty much did; she found a good spot and I just stayed there. Coming for home I saw some room on the rail and began to go there. But they closed that up pretty quick, so I went outside. Then she got it done.”

ALICE CLAPHAM (Bipartisanship, winner) – “She had a break and we ran her back at Keeneland. She ran fourth there and had a really tough trip that day. So, we knew she was ready for a nice run. She saved all the ground and waited and when she got the gap … she's got that nice little kick.”

FRACTIONS:   :23.46  :48.16  1:14.47  1:25.97  1:37.27

The stakes win was the second of the meet for rider Hernandez, but first in the Kathryn Crosby. He now has 29 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The stakes win was the first of the meet for trainer Motion and his first in the Kathryn Crosby. He now has eight stakes wins at Del Mar.

‘The Silky Sullivan Of Today’: Noble Drama Foils Favorite Super Corinto, Comebacking Jesus’ Team In Gulfstream Feature

David Fawkes Stable Inc.'s Noble Drama rallied from last to catch favored Super Corinto at the finish to win Saturday's feature at Gulfstream Park, in which multiple Grade 1-placed Jesus' Team returned to the races off a 15-month layoff.

Jesus' Team, who was sidelined while battling cases of salmonella and laminitis that followed minor surgery to remove an ankle chip, was never a factor while finishing ninth in the one-mile optional claiming allowance.

“He'd needed the race. He's been through a lot,” said trainer Jose D'Angelo, who saddled the son of Tapiture for runner-up finishes in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and 2021 Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) and a third-place finish in the 2020 Preakness Stakes (G1). “I'm happy with his race.”

Super Corinto, a Group 1-winning Chilean import making his first start in the U.S. for trainer Amador Sanchez, went to post as the 8-5 favorite and appeared on his way to victory under Hector Berrios after taking the lead at the top of the stretch. Noble Drama, a seven-time stakes winner over the Gulfstream Park main track, made a wide sweep into the stretch and finished powerfully to prevail by a half-length.

“He's a nice horse, isn't he? That's him. The Silky Sullivan of today,” trainer and owner David Fawkes said of Noble Drama, a 7-year-old Gone Astray gelding, who was bred by Harold L. Queen. 'He's a neat horse.”

Noble Drama ($26.20) is a close relative to Queen's homebreds Big Drama, 2010 champion sprinter  (by Montbrook) and Sheer Drama, a multiple Grade 1 winner (by Burning Roma), a half brothers produced by the Notebook mare Riveting Drama. Fawkes trained both runners.

Noble Drama ran the mile in 1:35.13 under Emisael Jaramillo.

Jet Set Racing's Super Corinto was making his first start since capturing the Gran Premio Hipodromo Chile (G1) April 30.

Pacesetter Wind of Change held on to finish third.

‘She Had A Couple Little Setbacks In The Summer’: Il Malocchio Makes The Grade In First Win Of Year In Woodbine’s Maple Leaf

Ontario-bred Il Malocchio, under Sahin Civaci, took the Grade 3 $171,300 Maple Leaf Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine.

Trained by Martin Drexler for owner and breeder Franco Meli, the 4-year-old daughter of Souper Speedy was full of run down the lane to record her third career score and first graded stakes victory in the 1 ¼-mile Tapeta test for fillies and mares.

Settled into fifth early, Il Malocchio, sent off at 9-1, watched an early scramble for the lead develop, as 2-1 choice Transient, with Jose Ortiz in the irons, eventually struck front after leaving from the outside post 11, and then proceeded to take her 10 rivals through an opening quarter in :23.93.

Transient was a half-length on top through a half-mile reached in :47.12, while Il Malocchio, still fifth, was yet to be given her cue from Civaci.

As the field turned for home after three-quarters in 1:11.82, Transient was under pressure from Angelou to her outside, while Il Malocchio kept gaining on the leaders, moving into third position at the stretch call.

With Angelou and Transient matching strides, Il Malocchio blew by to earn a one-length victory in a time of 2:02.55. Angelou bested Transient by half-length for the runner-up spot, while Silent Causeway rallied from far back to secure fourth.

Il Malocchio came into the Maple Leaf having gone 0-3-1 from seven starts on the season.

“First of all, she's enjoying the cooler weather for sure,” Drexler said. “She had a couple little setbacks in the summer. I also thought she got the perfect trip today. It was a perfect setup right from the beginning. She sat just off the pace, there was a little bit of pace to run at, she saved ground, and the rail was good today. It just really set up for her. She's just been always on. Some days, she struggles in the heat a bit. This weather and the type of track we had today, I think she enjoyed that.”

Meli, who will turn 50 on Sunday, was equally pleased with the filly who won the 2020 edition of the Victorian Queen Stakes and last year's Bison City Stakes.

“For some reason, I was very confident,” Meli said. “It was the distance. The mile and a quarter I thought would really help her, and the cooler weather. I knew she had a really rough summer.”

Il Malocchio, now 3-6-3 from 19 lifetime starts, paid $20.40 for the win.

Live Oak Homebred Our Flash Drive Coasts Home In Bessarabian At Woodbine

Our Flash Drive watched an early front-end scuffle unfold and then delivered a knockout blow down the lane in Saturday's $176,550 Bessarabian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine.

Lorena, Hazelbrook, and Loyalty all broke sharply at the start of the seven-furlong main track race for fillies and mares, with Lorena eventually claiming top spot, then leading her eight foes through an opening quarter-mile in :23.25.

Sweet Enough, at 31-1, then burst through along the rail to hold a head advantage after a half in :45.44, as Patrick Husbands, aboard Our Flash Drive, the 8-5 choice, kept his charge running comfortably and unfettered in sixth spot.

When the field navigated the turn for home, Our Flash Drive was plugged in and ready to pounce, effortlessly gliding past her rivals and then turning on the jets to dash away from her foes.

Ahead by two lengths at the stretch call, the 4-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper out of the Dynaformer mare Dynamotor, bred and owned by Live Oak Plantation, breezed home a 5 ¾-length winner in a time of 1:20.76. Hazelbrook edged Loyalty for second, while 54-1 Awesome Treat was fourth.

Our Flash Drive came into the Bessarabian off a strong runner-up performance in the Ontario Matron (G3) on October 22.

“I was getting the perfect trip down the backside [today], trying to find out where [jockey Jose Ortiz, aboard Artie's Princess] is. I just tipped out at the top of the lane. Actually, she ran a winning race [in the Ontario Matron]. That horse [Kate's Kingdom] just followed me and caught me.”

It was third graded stakes score for Our Flash Drive, who took last year's Selene (G3) and Ontario Colleen (G3). The well-traveled Florida-bred also won the Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes this August at Saratoga.

The Mark Casse trainee is now 5-3-1 from 14 career starts.

Our Flash Drive paid $5.20 for the win.
