City Man Takes Inside Path For Fort Lauderdale Win, Pegasus World Cup Turf Next

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Peter and Patty Searles' City Man, under patient handling from jockey Joel Rosario, found a seam along the rail in mid-stretch and sprinted clear late to extend his win streak to three races in Saturday's $200,000 Fort Lauderdale (G2) at Gulfstream Park.

The 66th running of the 1 1/8-mile Fort Lauderdale for 3-year-olds and up, a local prep for the $1-million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1), was the richest of six stakes, five graded, worth $850,000 in purses on an 11-race New Year's Eve program.

City Man ($8.20), a New York-bred son of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man trained by Christophe Clement, completed the distance in 1:46.10 over a firm turf course and put himself on course for the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus Turf Jan. 28.

“He was running so well up in New York and we just felt like he was really on top of his game. I've never seen him run this well. We thought, 'Let's run another race and really see how he does against open company in a Grade 2,' and if we did well there we'd look probably to go to the Pegasus,” co-owner Dean Reeves said. “Christophe stables at Payson Park, so we'll leave him here in Florida and get him ready for the Pegasus.”

Rosario settled City Man in third, saving ground inside as 30-1 long shot Winfromwithin jumped out front and raced on an uncontested lead through a quarter-mile in 23.62 seconds and a half in 46.92. Grade 1-winning stablemate Decorated Invader, who drew into the field following the early scratch of Marwad, chased in second with two-time defending Pegasus Turf champion Colonel Liam in the clear in fourth.

Winfromwithin still clung to a short lead after six furlongs went in 1:10.11 when Decorated Invader and Colonel Liam ranged up on the outside, while Rosario bided his time waiting for room in behind. Unable to move outside Winfromwithin, Rosario ducked to the rail, barged through a narrow opening on the inside and into the clear.

“It was a good trip,” Rosario said. “He came out of the gate well so I could get a good position. I was in a good spot. He did the rest after that.”

Decorated Invader emerged from a four-way photo finish in second, with Street Ready third and Winfromwithin and 60-1 long shot Good Governance in a dead heat for fourth. Colonel Liam, Pao Alto, Tango Tango Tango, King Cause, Shadow Sphinx, Kentucky Ghost and Carpenters Call completed the order of finish.

City Man entered the Fort Lauderdale off wins against fellow New York-breds in the 1 1/8-mile Ashley T. Cole and 1 1/16-mile Mohawk on the Aqueduct turf. Saturday was his fourth win from five starts including the July 16 Forbidden Apple (G3) at Saratoga.

“The idea was to be forward with him. I told [jockey Joel Rosario] not to fight him and be comfortable, and he won well,” Clement said. “It's a nice race, a prep for the Pegasus. That would be the plan. He's a New York-bred, so I gave him a break [in the winter] in the past. But this year, I just thought we had never run in the Pegasus and I told Mr. Reeves, 'Why don't you try to run in the Pegasus?' It's a beautiful turf course, well done by Gulfstream. They got it right. All the jockeys have been very positive about it, and I'm delighted.”

Colonel Liam, undefeated in three prior trips over the Gulfstream turf including the 2020 Tropical Park Derby, was making his first start in 281 days since finishing ninth in the Dubai Turf (G1) March 26.

“I thought he worked out a pretty good trip from the wide post. He got to the position we wanted. They were really running along quickly. [Jockey] Irad [Ortiz Jr.] said he flattened out on him a little in the middle of the far turn. It's been a while since he's run and hopefully, he needed the race. He seemed to jog back great and looked great,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We'll train as though he'll run in the Pegasus Turf unless he tells me not to.”

Skippylongstocking Pegasus World Cup Bound After Harlan’s Holiday Triumph, Ortiz Notches 50th Graded Stakes Win of Year

Daniel Alonso's Skippylongstocking parlayed a dream trip into a solid victory in Saturday's $150,000 Harlan's Holiday (G3) at Gulfstream Park, virtually clinching a berth in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at the Hallandale Beach track Jan. 28.

O'Connor, a stablemate in the Saffie Joseph Jr. stable who was favored at 6-5 in the stakes for 3-year-olds and up, finished a disappointing fourth.

Skippylongstocking ($8.40) provided jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. with a record 5oth graded stakes victory in 2022 on the New Year's Eve card that included six stakes (five graded), co-headlined by the Harlan's Holiday, a prep for the Pegasus World Cup, and the $200,000 Fort Lauderdale (G2), a prep for the $1-million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1), also on Jan. 28.

“It was a game effort by Skippy. He's a horse that tries and he runs hard,” said Joseph, who is training Florida Derby (G1) winner White Abarrio up to Pegasus. “O'Connor disappointed. He's better than that. He's much, much better than that. Seeing how the race unfolded and the speed kept going around, maybe that was it, but I can't really buy that. He made up ground and hit a flat spot. Hopefully, he comes out well, and we'd like to give him a chance in the Pegasus also.”

Skippylongstocking broke alertly to closely monitor the pace set by Pioneer of Medina around the first turn before bobbling briefly at the top of the backstretch. The son of Exaggerator recovered quickly to put pressure on the Todd Pletcher-trained pacesetter, who put of fractions of 23.75 and :47.14 for the first half-mile. Ortiz  asked his long-striding mount for a kick, and the Kentucky-bred 3-year-old obliged with a steady run through the stretch to score comfortably by two lengths.

Pioneer of Medina fought back after being passed in midstretch by a stalking Simplification to finish second by a neck. O'Connor, who raced in fifth on the backstretch was eased off the rail by jockey Edgard Zayas in the backstretch to launch a bid, but the Chilean Group 1 winner never made an impact while settling for fourth, beaten by 4 ¼ lengths by his stablemate.

“I was planning to break out of there running because of the post position and try and get a good position, and then when it was time to make a move try to make it on the outside. Everything worked out perfect, but the race wasn't for him today. It wasn't his day,” Zayas said. Maybe next time he can get a little bit of pace to run at. I don't think he wants to be rushed to his feet. Hopefully he finishes strong next time.”

Skippy Longstocking ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.76 to collect his second graded stakes victory of the year while beating older horses for the first time. Earlier this year he finished third in the Belmont Stakes (G1), fifth in the Preakness (G1), and won the West Virginia Derby (G3).

“The trainer told me just ride him wherever he's comfortable. He broke in a good position. I was in a good forward place — good position — and I go from there,” Ortiz said. “When I asked him, he had plenty in the tank.”

While Skippylongstocking was pretty much on cruise control in the Harlan's Holiday, he did provide an anxious moment for his trainer when he bobbled in the backstretch.

“He had a perfect trip, except when he went to switch leads in the backstretch. It looked liked something went wrong. Irad said that there was poop on the track and he jumped it,” Joseph said. “It scared me.”

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher was pleased with the effort put forth by Pioneer of Medina.

“I thought he ran great, broke really sharply and Luis went ahead and took the initiative. I thought the fractions were reasonable and he fought hard for second. I'm proud of him. He's probably a little better at a mile and an eight,” said Pletcher, not ruling out a return in the Pegasus World Cup should an invitation be forthcoming.

Sibelius Tallies Breakthrough Graded Stakes Victory In Mr. Prospector

Jun Park and Delia's Nash's Sibelius closely stalked the early pace and drew away from his 10 rivals in the stretch to capture Saturday's $125,000 Mr. Prospector (G3) at Gulfstream Park, collecting his first graded stakes success.

The late-developing 4-year-old gelding ran seven furlongs in 1:23.04 under Junior Alvarado to score by 2 ¼ lengths in the seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up.

Alvarado, who guided Stolen Holiday to victory in the Rampart in the previous race on Gulfstream's New Year's Eve card, moved to within five wins of the 2,000-win milestone aboard Sibelius ($11).

Uncle Ernie set the pace along the backstretch and on the far turn while setting fractions of :22.09 and :44.07 for the first half-mile, closely pursued by Sibelius. Turning into the stretch, the Jeremiah O'Dwyer-trained son of Not This Time took over the lead and was never threatened thereafter.

Dean Delivers closed for second, two lengths ahead of Steal Sunshine.

Mr. Prospector (G3) Quotes

Winning trainer Jeremiah O'Dwyer (Sibelius): “I felt great going in. He had been training fabulous. He was really sharp and honest at home. After we ran at Churchill, we backed off him for a couple of weeks –, easy time, round pen, hand-walking – then all of a sudden, he's turning inside out in his stall and we have to take him back into training. He's a very special horse to me and to the owners, and it's a very emotional win.

“When you get a speed horse like that dropping over in front of you, you don't want to get bottled up and boxed in and get taken out of your comfort zone. But [jockey] Junior [Alvarado], fabulous job. He knows the horse so well and he just eased the horse around when he wanted and got the job done for us.”

Winning jockey Junior Alvarado (Sibelius): “The horse broke very sharp, and we were able to save ground a little bit. When we turned for home, he was dragging me to the lead. After that, I just had to make sure he kept happy running for home. He was just much the best horse today.”

Queen Goddess Dominates In Robert J. Frankel, Provides Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners Second Graded Stakes Win On Santa Anita Card

In a race that for all intents and purposes was over with just under a mile to run, favored Queen Goddess dictated terms throughout in Saturday's $100,000 Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita and fairly waltzed to an emphatic 2 ½-length score while ridden for the first time by John Velazquez.

Trained by Michael McCarthy, the 4-year-old daughter of Empire Maker got a mile and one eighth on turf in 1:48.35.

Breaking sharply from her number nine post position, Velazquez was intent on making the early lead, and by the time the field had reached the finish line for the first time, Queen Goddess had settled into a nice rhythm with Closing Remarks and Island of Love about one length behind going into the first turn. Leaving the three furlong marker, Queen Goddess opened up three lengths and with a final eighth of a mile run in :12 and two-fifths, she was long gone.

A winner of last year's American Oaks (G1) when the race was shifted to the main track, Queen Goddess took the 1 1/4-mile Santa Ana Stakes (G3) on turf March 26 at Santa Anita and had been idle since finishing second in the Santa Barbara Stakes (G3)  May 14.

The 2-1 favorite today in a field of 10 fillies and mares three and up, Queen Goddess paid $6.00 for the win.

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, who notched their second graded stakes win of the day following Air Force Red's triumph in the Joe Hernandez (G2) two races earlier, and Gary Barber, Queen Goddess registered her third graded stakes win and her fifth win from 10 career starts. Out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Royal Story, Queen Goddess, with Saturday's winnings of $60,000, increased her earnings to $470,580.

Up close throughout under Joe Bravo, California-bred Closing Remarks prevailed by 1 ¼ lengths for second money over third-place finisher Quattroelle.

Irish-bred Quattroelle was midpack early and finished 1 ¼ lengths in front of second choice England's Rose.

Fractions on the race were :24.39, :48.89, 1:12.42, and 1:36.25.

ROBERT J. FRANKEL (G3) STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES
JOHN VELAZQUEZ, QUEEN GODDESS, WINNER: “Michael and I talked before the race and it looked like there was only one other horse that could possibly be on the lead, so I decided to come out running to make sure she's on the lead and then we can put her were she's comfortable. She was able to dictate the race by going to the lead the first time by the wire. At that point she was good. Going into the far turn, she switched to her left lead and she just went. I said, 'Okay momma, let's go!'”

TRAINER QUOTES
MICHAEL MCCARTHY, QUEEN GODDESS, WINNER: “She just likes to get out and kind of do her thing. She's got a very high cruising speed. She is just very kind to herself. I thought today when she turned up the backside and put a little daylight between them that she would run well.
“Johnny (Velazquez) is in the Hall of Fame, I'm not (giving instructions), he does his homework. He worked this filly the other day and was very impressed by the way she went.”

OWNER QUOTES
ARON WELLMAN, ECLIPSE THOROUGHBRED PARTNERS, PART OWNER, QUEEN GODDESS, WINNER: “Since we started Eclipse, we took the approach that if Johnny is available, we will take him. He's been an integral part of Eclipse's success over the years, and we are forever indebted to him. Having him here at Santa Anita for the big meet is huge…for the community, for Santa Anita, and for our stable. He puts in the work and he's a Hall of Famer, he is here to play. It's good to see him get out there and get a graded stakes to close out the year.”
