Cairo Consort Overcomes Gate Jitters, Lands First Start For New Connections In Ginger Brew

Repole Stable and Town and Country Racing's Cairo Consort paid immediate dividends for her new connections, surging past Erna in midstretch and holding off a late challenge from Stephanie's Charm to win Saturday's $100,000 Ginger Brew at Gulfstream Park.

The 12th running of the Ginger Brew for fillies was the second of two one-mile turf stakes for newly turned 3-year-olds following Candidate's front-running victory in the $100,000 Dania Beach.

Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, both named Saturday as Eclipse Award finalists for 2022, Cairo Consort ($3) completed the distance in 1:35.80 over a firm turf course as the 1-2 favorite.

The Cairo Prince filly was purchased from breeder Frankfort Park Stud for $875,000 last fall at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall mixed sale following a juvenile campaign where she won two of six starts, including the Catch a Glimpse, also running second in the Natalma (G1) and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

“Everything we had done with her had been on the dirt, so we were kind of knowing we have a turf filly and watching her train on the dirt,” Pletcher said. “She trains fine on the dirt, but clearly she's better on the turf. I felt like we had her ready enough to go and we didn't want to overdo it. It's the first race of the year, and we were happy with the outcome.”

Reluctant to load in the starting gate, Cairo Consort broke well and raced in fourth as 40-1 long shot Showgirl Lynne B, a stakes winner on the Tapeta last summer at Gulfstream, was in front from the rail through splits of :23.15 and :47.75 pressed by Erna, making her stakes debut, and Isabel Alexandra.

“I could tell when she came to the paddock she was on her toes a little bit, but we've done some work with her at the gate in the mornings. We've seen a hint of that, but not that, so we'll have to work on that a little more,” Pletcher said.

“You hate to see one get fractious behind the gate like that, but once she got in the gate she stood nicely and broke well and kind of got in the position that Irad and I talked about her getting to,” he added. “It was a pretty smooth trip from there.”

Cairo Consort, kept in the clear by Ortiz, began to range up to the leaders around the turn on the outside but still had work to do once straightened for home with Erna having inherited the top spot. Set down for a drive, she reeled in Erna inside the eighth pole and surged again when Stephanie's Charm, sent off at 11-1, came with her bid.

“It was a perfect trip,” Ortiz said. “She was close to the leaders and then a took a hold and she relaxed real well behind horses. At the three-eighths pole I asked her to start going forward and she did. She responded every time I asked her. Turning for home, she opened up by a half-length and then when she felt the horse outside, she was there. She had a little more in the tank.”

Cairo Consort crossed the wire a half length ahead of Stephanie's Charm, with Navy Goat another 1 ¼ lengths back in third. Erna held on by a neck over Isabel Alexandra for fourth, and they were followed by Showgirl Lynne B, Lady Azteca and Bel Pensiero. Anna Karenine was scratched.

“It was interesting talking to Irad afterward. He said he felt like he had a lot more horse and she kind of idled a little bit when she made the lead,” Pletcher said of the filly, who is out of the Street Cry mare Absolutely Awesome. “When that horse came to her she had a little more.”

Next up for 3-year-old fillies on the grass at Gulfstream is the $175,000 Sweetest Chant (G3) going 1 1/16 miles Feb. 4.

“They have a nice series here so we'll probably look at the next one,” Pletcher said. “We'll see. We can always skip one and go to the next one. We'll play it by ear and see how she comes out of it.”

‘Everything Went To Plan’: Candidate Cruises Gate To Wire To Win Dania Beach

Mark Grier's Candidate remained undefeated on turf with a comfortable 1 ¾-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Dania Beach at Gulfstream Park, where the Arnaud Delacour-trained colt was never seriously challenged in the mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds.

The Dania Beach co-headlined Saturday's 11-race card at Gulfstream with the $100,000 Ginger Brew, a mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Candidate, who had previously broken his maiden in his second lifetime start in his turf debut at Laurel Park before rolling to an optional claiming allowance triumph at Tampa Bay Downs, broke alertly from the starting gate and was in cruise control on the front end under Tyler Gaffalione before kicking clear in the stretch.

“Everything went to plan. He broke alertly, put himself in a good spot and relaxed nicely on the front end,” said Gaffalione, who notched career win number 1,994 aboard the son of Exaggerator. “Going into the second turn I just asked him to pick it up and he just kept finding. It was a really good performance today.”

Candidate ($17.20) set fractions of :23.41 and :47.89 for the first half mile before completing the mile in a solid 1:34.71. Major Dude finished second two lengths ahead of Worthington, both of whom were the closest pursuers throughout the race.

“It pretty much set up the way it would set up. The horse has a lot of natural speed. He broke well and made the lead and Tyler put him in a nice rhythm,” Delacour said.

Candidate debuted with a seventh-place finish in a 1 1/8-mile off-the-turf maiden special weight race over a sloppy main track at Laurel before scoring three straight races on turf by a combined 8 ½ lengths.

“We bought him (from consignor Randy Miles for $150,000) at the (2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic) sale at Timonium. We were not quite sure if we were going to go turf or dirt,” Delacour said. “After his workouts, it was pretty obvious he was working better on the Tapeta at Fair Hill, so it made a lot of sense to try him on the turf.”

Delacour isn't likely to give in to the temptation of putting the abundantly talented 3-year-old back on dirt.

“We've had some pretty good work at Tampa, and he doesn't give me the feeling,” Delacour said. “His knees are a little higher on the dirt than on the turf.”

Candidate is a Kentucky-bred out off the Pure Prize mare Navy Ribbon. He was bred by Rose Hill Farm and Thoroughbred Acadiana

‘That’s The One I Want To Win The Most’: Interstatedaydream Could Use Azeri As Springboard To Coveted Apple Blossom

Multiple graded stakes winner Interstatedaydream recently returned to trainer Brad Cox's barn at Fair Grounds to continue preparations for two starts this season at Oaklawn, the 4-year-old filly's owner, Staton Flurry of Hot Springs, said.

Flurry said Interstatedaydream is scheduled to make her 2023 debut in the $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles March 11. The Azeri, if all goes well, will be Interstatedaydream's prep for the $1-million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at 1 1/16 miles April 15.

“The goal is to get a Grade 1,” Flurry said. “She's got plenty of racing left in her. I don't think there was ever a question not to bring her back. The Apple Blossom is the big one that we've got circled. That's the one I want to win the most. After that, we'll look at maybe races like the Fleur de Lis, the Clement Hirsch, the Zenyatta. Kind of see what Nest is doing, too, because Nest is going to be the big one for the year that we're going to have to run against.”

Interstatedaydream, a daughter of champion, 2017 Arkansas Derby (G1) winner, and Ashford Stud stallion Classic Empire, opened her 2022 campaign with a powerful entry-level allowance victory at 1 1/16 miles last March at Oaklawn before finishing third, beaten 8 ¼ lengths by Nest, in the $600,000 Ashland Stakes (G1) last April at Keeneland. The Ashland was also 1 1/16 miles. Nest rose to the top of the division last summer and is expected to be crowned champion 3-year-old filly of 2022 later this month.

Following the Ashland, Interstatedaydream captured two major races for 3-year-old fillies – $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at 1 1/8 miles last May at Pimlico and the $200,000 Indiana Oaks (G3) at 1 1/16 miles last July at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Interstatedaydream, in her last start, finished second in the $150,000 Cathryn Sophia Stakes at one mile and 70 yards Aug. 23 at Parx.

“We decided to give her a little break and get her ready for here,” Flurry said.

Following the Cathryn Sophia, Flurry said Interstatedaydream spent roughly 2 ½ months “just being a horse” at a Kentucky farm before moving to LaCroix Training Center in LaGrange, Kentucky, about a half-hour from Churchill Downs.

“The plan is the Azeri, Apple Blossom,” Flurry said. “Then after that, who knows. We'll see how she comes back, but she looked really good, Brad said. I guess that's about eight weeks between now at the Azeri.”

Cox and Flurry teamed to win the 2021 Azeri with Shedaresthedevil, who made her 4-year-old debut in the race. Interstatedaydream, who has never faced older horses, was purchased from consignor Wavertree Stables for $175,000 at the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in training. The Ontario-bred filly has a 4-2-1 record from seven lifetime starts and earnings of $498,825.

Oaklawn-based Secret Oath is also scheduled to make her 4-year-old debut in the Azeri for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Secret Oath was Oaklawn's top 3-year-old filly last season, scoring runaway victories in the Martha Washington Stakes and Honeybee Stakes (G3). Secret Oath beat Nest in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) last May at Churchill Downs.

Lukas said the Azeri is Secret Oath's scheduled prep for the Apple Blossom.
