Nicked Quarter Keeps Rich Strike Out Of Turfway Race; Kentucky Derby Winner To Target Either Keeneland Or Oaklawn

Rick Dawson, owner of 2022 Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike, announced on Facebook this week that the colt would not make his anticipated 4-year-old debut at Turfway Park this Saturday due to “a very non-serious issue.”

Trainer Eric Reed later told bloodhorse.com that the issue was a nicked quarter, a raw spot typically located just above the top of the horse's hoof which can be caused by a hind hoof stepping on a front hoof.

“He has a spot about the size of your fingernail that's a little raw that will take three or four days to toughen back up,” Reed explained. “So we are going to back off and make sure he is 100%. He was out on the track this morning and was fine.”

Now, Rich Strike will target a 2023 debut on April 22, in either the G3 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland or the G2 Oaklawn Handicap in Arkansas.

Rich Strike, the son of Keen Ice, has not raced since finishing sixth in the G1 Clark at Churchill on Nov. 25. The colt has not won a race since his 81-1 upset in the Run for the Roses, but did finish a hard-fought second in the G2 Lukas Classic (behind Hot Rod Charlie) and fourth behind Horse of the Year Flightline in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Overall, Rich Strike's record stands at 2-1-3 from 13 starts for earnings of $2,508,989.

Texas Champions Day: Sam Houston Hosts Seven Stakes On Saturday’s Card

If variety is the spice of life, then Saturday's Texas Champions Day card at Sam Houston Race Park will undoubtedly prove delightful. In addition to the customary stakes races for older horses, the inaugural $100,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby and $100,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Oaks will be part of a nine-race card.

The heaviest favorite on the program figures to be Gold Pilot, who was installed as the 2/5 morning line choice in the Star of Texas, which goes as Race 3. A two-time winner at the meet, Gold Pilot enters off a victory in the H-Town where he put on his customary late running gambit to take command in deep stretch and power clear. His trainer, Bret Calhoun, enters the final three weeks of the 2023 stand third in the standings and has an impressive 32% strike rate.

When they met up on Texas Preview Day five weeks ago, Imaluckycharm scored an upset win in the Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes, turning back stablemate, and older sister, No Mas Tequila. The latter was bidding for a second straight score in that affair, and each were making their respective 2023 debuts. Trainer Karen Jacks conditions both and described watching her two star mares as a “unique experience.”

“It's good and bad! It's more of a nail biter than a situation where you scream and holler,” Jacks said.

Despite having been bested by Imaluckycharm last time out, No Mas Tequila is the 7/5 morning line favorite. Jacks described the elder daughter of Foxy Boss as “mean as a junkyard dog.” Perhaps that toughness will help her turn the tables.

A defeat in the 2022 Stonerside Sprint to eventual graded stake winner Greeley and Ben is the only blemish on Mr. Money Bags' record at Sam Houston Race Park (6: 5-1-0). He bids for a second straight Spirit of Texas triumph against a field that includes Algebra, who was victorious when the two met in a match race last April at Lone Star Park. Mr. Money Bags has been sidelined since then, but sports an active worktab dating back to early February.

Two years to the day since she was claimed by Caden Dean Arthur, Lady Ave will bid for her first stakes win in the Yellow Rose. Claims rarely work out this well, especially when they come for $5,000, as Arthur's daughter of Bind has blown past $200,000 in earnings in the last 24 months. She enters on a five-race winning streak, with the two most recent scores coming at Fair Grounds. Her runner-up effort in this event a year ago was very strong, as she was forced to change running styles given the plethora of pace in that bunch. Her current form indicates that she will be very tough to beat.

Boerne is a daughter of Fed Biz who has banked over 300k in earnings, including a win in the Valor Farm in her most recent outing. A versatile race mare, she sports stakes wins against Texas breds on turf and dirt, sprinting and around two turns.

The 2/5 morning line favorite in the Richard King Stakes, Sunlit Song has won his first two starts of the 2023 Sam Houston thoroughbred meet with devastating ease, including a score in last month's Houston Turf. After an abbreviated 2022 campaign that included two surprising defeats at SHRP, the gray son of My Golden Song is arguably better than ever.

“He had some foot issues last year so we gave hm some time off to recuperate,” trainer Mindy Willis said. “He's my big horse and I've never trained one better than him. I'm excited every time that horse runs.”

Willis will also saddle Sunlit Song's little brother, Houston Turf runner-up Truly Danzig. That son of Etesaal looks like an accomplished runner in his own right, even if he falls short of his accomplished older brother.

The Texas Thoroughbred Association Oaks goes as Race 4 on Saturday's 9-race program and will be headedby 6/5 morning line favorite Santa Fe Gold. She hails from the high percentage barn of Bret Calhoun and enters off a win going six furlongs at Sam Houston Race Park. The runner-up from that event, Appropriated Funds, turned heads in a handy score at Sam Houston on Saturday afternoon.

Santa Fe Gold was purchased at the TTA 2021 Texas Yearling Sale for $50,000 and is a daughter of Fast Anna.

The Texas Thoroughbred Association Derby will end the 9-race program and brings together a competitive bunch of 3 year-olds. The headliner is also from the Calhoun barn, #5 Release McCraken. That son of McCraken was made the 5/2 morning line favorite and enters off a win in a N1X at Fair Grounds early in December. He meets a solid group that includes stablemate Vietnam Victory, who has not been seen since winning the Groovy here at Sam Houston Race Park during the Houston Racing Festival. #4 Funny Uncle has been competitive against tougher and now joins the care of Austin Gustafson for his first try in Texas.

Elm Drive Returns To Souther California For Saturday’s Desert Stormer Stakes At Santa Anita

A Grade 2 stakes winner in her second start at age two, Phil D'Amato's talented Elm Drive, idle since well beaten Sept. 24 at Pimlico Race Course, returns to Southern California and heads a field of five older fillies and mares going six furlongs in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Desert Stormer Stakes at Santa Anita.

A 4-year-old filly by Mohaymen out of the Indian Charlie mare Lets Dance Charlie, Elm Drive's last Southern California start was a third place performance in the G2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 4, 2022. Subsequently distanced in the G1 Test Stakes at Saratoga Aug. 6, she then showed early speed but checked in sixth, beaten 11 ½ lengths in an ungraded stakes going six furlongs at Pimlico on Sept. 24.

A galloping 2 ¼ length winner going seven furlongs here in the ungraded Angel's Flight Stakes four starts back on May 8, 2022, Elm Drive, who is owned by Little Red Feather Racing, will be ridden for the first time by Ramon Vazquez as she seeks her third stakes win and her fourth overall from nine starts.

The leading money earner in the field with $228,140, Elm Drive has six works on her tab at Los Alamitos and two here at Santa Anita, the most recent a five furlong main track drill in 1:00.40 on March 20.

Well beaten in a 6 ½ furlong hillside turf allowance Feb. 20, Mark Glatt's Grade 1 stakes placed Dance to the Music switches to dirt and will be making her second start off a nearly six month vacation in the Desert Stormer. A well beaten second in the G1 Del Mar Debutante in her second start at age two, Dance to the Music, a 4-year-old filly by Maclean's Music, sold for $575,000 at an Ocala 2-year-old in training sale and will be making her ninth career start on Saturday.

Owned by Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, Dance to the Music has two wins and as many seconds and will be ridden for the first time by Edwin Maldonado.

Stakes placed once on dirt and once on turf and raced exclusively on grass in her last 10 starts, trainer Keith Desormeaux's Stella Noir returns to the main track in search of her first career stakes victory in what will be her 18th start.

A first-out maiden 6 ½ furlong winner on dirt here two years ago on March 19, 2021, Stella Noir is 1-1-2 from seven tries on dirt and will likely hope for a stalking trip with Luis Contreras up for the first time. A 6 ½ furlong hillside turf allowance winner two starts back on Jan. 13, Stella Noir is a 5-year-old mare by Stay Thirsty out of the Cuvee mare Guadalupe High.

Owned and bred in Kentucky by Rose Hill Farm, Desormeaux, Wayne Detmar and Gene Voss, Stella Noir is 17-3-3-3 overall with earnings of $207,642.
