Lifetime Of Chance Repels Strong Late Challenge To Win NYSS Times Square Division

D. J. Stable's Lifetime of Chance staved off a late bid from Bank Frenzy to capture Saturday's $200,000 Times Square division of the New York Stallion Stakes Series, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint over the main track for eligible New York-sired sophomores, at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Trained by Mark Casse, the bay son of The Lieutenant made his stakes debut in his first outing for the Hall of Fame conditioner after making his first six starts in the care of Linda Rice. He entered from an eye-catching 16-length score in a New York-bred maiden special weight on March 18 at the Big A.

“We've had him a little under a month. He has just been automatic, really classy and has does everything right since coming under our care. Linda did a good job with him,” said Shane Tripp, Casse's New York-based assistant.

Lifetime of Chance broke alertly from post 3 under Dylan Davis and briefly led the charge before East Coast Girl, hustled out of the inside post by Jose Ortiz, made the point to mark the opening quarter-mile in :22.50 over the fast main track.

Davis urged Lifetime of Chance into contention along with the outside rushing Ten Cent Town into the turn as East Coast Girl continued to dictate terms through a half-mile in :46.34. The Samy Camacho-piloted Bank Frenzy and Dr. Kraft, with Jackie Davis up, sprung into motion late in the turn, maneuvering around the Manny Franco-ridden Ten Cent Town, who appeared to be bumped slightly by Lifetime of Chance in pursuit of East Coast Girl.

Bank Frenzy, despite lugging out towards the wide-rallying Dr. Kraft, continued to find more in the final stages but could not overcome Lifetime of Chance, who took over in the final sixteenth and prevailed by a neck in a time of 1:18.65.

It was a further 2 1/4-lengths back to East Coast Girl in third with Dr. Kraft, General Banker, Ten Cent Town and Kerness rounding out the order of finish. Coach Pitino was scratched. Jackie Davis requested to hold the race for potential interference by Bank Frenzy, but an ongoing stewards' review resulted in no change to the order of finish.

Davis, who was aboard Lifetime of Chance for the first time in the afternoon, said he was a little concerned about East Coast Girl taking the field gate-to-wire.

“Down the backside, Jose started getting away from me. I was trying to keep him into it but he was just there and didn't want to jump into the bridle,” Davis said. “I just kept him with the pace and tried riding him. He just stayed in one spot, but that last eighth of a mile he found some extra and galloped out great. I thought maybe he doesn't like to be ridden so much early and he can find that big kick later.”

Davis said he wasn't too worried about the review into the stretch run.

“I came out a path at the top of the stretch. I took a look at it and was able to correct him and get that straight path all the way down the lane,” Davis said. “I didn't feel that I had any bump or anything like that. It looked like a little bit of a chain reaction to Manny. I thought I was in good shape.”

Bank Frenzy, a maiden winner at second asking at Tampa Bay Downs, was making his first start outside of Florida for trainer Lisa Lewis. Camacho, aboard for the first two career outings, said his colt performed admirably in the late stages.

“The trainer gave me the opportunity to ride that horse because I know the horse from his first time at Gulfstream,” Camacho said. “The last two times, she used different jockeys but the riders weren't as familiar. He has a little bit of a sensitive mouth. He gave me a great kick at the end.”

Lifetime of Chance, a half-brother to graded-stakes winner Lucky Player, is out of the Storm Cat mare Janetstickettocats, who is a half-sister to dual graded-stakes winner Runway Model.

Bred in New York by Destiny Oaks of Ocala, the $135,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale purchase banked $110,000 in victory while improving his record to 2-2-2 from seven career starts. He returned $6.70 for a $2 win bet.

Tyler’s Tribe Breezes Toward Oaklawn’s Bachelor

Iowa-bred star Tyler's Tribe, under regular rider Kylee Jordan, worked an easy three furlongs Saturday morning at Oaklawn in advance of the $150,000 Bachelor Stakes April 29. The six-furlong race is for 3-year-olds.

Tyler's Tribe, who breezed alone over a fast track, covered the distance in :37.60 and galloped out a half-mile :50.20. Tyler's Tribe will be returning to a sprint after finishing a leg-weary sixth in his 3-year-old and two-turn debut in a March 30 allowance at Oaklawn.

“He was knocked out after that last race,” co-owner/trainer Tim Martin said following Saturday's work. “He had his head in the dirt for a few days. I guess the mile kind of did him in.”

Tyler's Tribe, by Sharp Azteca, received a brief break following the March 30 race after being shipped to Martin's nearby training center in Royal. Martin said the gelding returned to Oaklawn several days ago to continue preparations for the Bachelor. Saturday's work was the first for Tyler's Tribe since he zipped five furlongs in :59.40 March 23 – the fastest of 20 recorded at the distance that morning.

“Just an easy three-eighths today,” Martin said. “He scoped clean.”

Tyler's Tribe bled in his final two starts last year, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) Nov. 4 at Keeneland and Advent Stakes Dec. 9 at Oaklawn. Tyler's Tribe was eased in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and finished third in the Advent.

Tyler's Tribe won his first five career starts, including four stakes, by a combined 59¾ front-running lengths at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

Advent winner Count de Monet is also pointing for the Bachelor, trainer Tom Swearingen said Saturday morning. The Bachelor closed with 22 nominations.

Post positions for the Bachelor and the inaugural $150,000 Dig a Diamond Stakes will be drawn Monday. The Dig a Diamond, for older fillies and mares at 1 mile, is also April 29.

Ward Pencils In Royal Ascot As Next For Stonestreet’s Regally Bred Debut Winner American Rascal

The expectations for Stonestreet Stables' American Rascal were sky high before his debut his Thursday at Keeneland.

Expectations met and exceeded.

The first foal from the brilliant Lady Aurelia romped by 10¼ lengths in :51.21 for the maiden special weight race going 4½ furlongs on the dirt under Joel Rosario. The time is the fastest of the meet for the distance.

“I think he can be better next time,” trainer Wesley Ward said Saturday morning of the son of Curlin.

The next time figures to be the Norfolk (G2) at Royal Ascot in England going five furlongs on June 22. Ward has won the Norfolk twice with No Nay Never in 2013 and Shang Shang Shang in 2018.

“He came to us highly recommended,” Ward said about American Rascal. “Joel (Rosario) drove up to Payson Park (from Gulfstream) to work him, and not many jockeys make that (90-minute) drive.

“We came up here, and he worked at Turfway and then here. His last work here (five days before his debut), the light bulb went on. Lady Aurelia was the same way. She got outworked in the mornings.”

In Lady Aurelia's debut in April 2016 – also at Keeneland for Stonestreet, George Bolton, and Peter Leidel,– she won by 7½ lengths and in a then track record time of :50.85 for 4½ furlongs. Lady Aurelia went on to win the Queen Mary (G2) at Royal Ascot and the Darley Prix Morny (G1) at Deauville in France that season. The daughter of Scat Daddy received the Cartier Award as Europe's champion 2-year-old filly.

Possible Derby Storylines Beginning to Take Odd Shapes

While horseplayers, handicappers, and public touts have all the fun sifting through their facts and figures for the 149th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve coming up May 6, we poor ink-stained wretches of the Fourth Estate must sit around twiddling our thumbs, wondering what kind of result we'll be stuck with and praying it will be a tale our grandchildren can tell. Or at least gets a few dozen retweets.
