‘He’s A Bit Like A Rockstar’: Veteran Drafted Out For Title Defense In Saturday’s Runhappy

Dublin Fjord Stables, Racepoint Stables, Kevin D. Hilbert and Thomas E. O'Keefe's 9-year-old warhorse Drafted will return off a brief layoff to attempt a repeat score in Saturday's Grade 3, $175,000 Runhappy at Belmont Park.

The six-furlong test for older horses will be Drafted's first start since finishing sixth in the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap on March 4 at Aqueduct Racetrack for trainer David Duggan. The gray Field Commission gelding was a one-length winner of last year's Runhappy, where he progressed through each point of call to collar graded stakes-winner Chateau in deep stretch.

Following a dual Group 3-winning campaign in Dubai from 2017-20 with trainer Doug Watson, Drafted joined Duggan's stable and made his debut for the Irish conditioner when fifth in the 2020 Grade 3 Fall Highweight at Aqueduct. He won his ninth start for Duggan with an emphatic 4 1/2-length score in the Grade 3 Toboggan last February at the Big A, where he garnered a career-best 97 Beyer Speed Figure before capturing the Runhappy two starts later.

Initially slated for stakes action at Laurel Park, Drafted remained at Duggan's Belmont barn due to issues with the main track at the Maryland oval.

“He's training well now and we freshened him up a bit after the last race,” Duggan said. “Originally, we were going to go to Laurel with him and then with everything going on with the track down there we decided to scratch that idea. We wanted to take a step back and go the conservative route with him.”

Drafted is the field's lone millionaire, bragging earnings of $1,176,943 through a 35-10-3-5 record. Although he has proven to be a very useful horse over the years, Duggan admits that he can be a bit difficult to train.

“He gallops with the pony in the mornings. We keep it fairly simple with him,” Duggan said. “When he works, he works fast. It's basically just maintenance after that. He isn't the easiest to ride and is a bit hard to control. But he put us back on the map and has been a great horse to be around. He's a bit like a rockstar, he's got that ambiance to him.”

Breaking from post 1, Drafted will be reunited with jockey Jose Ortiz, who piloted the horse to his Toboggan and Runhappy conquests last year.

Mr Phil will make his second start off an eight-month layoff for trainer Rob Atras.

The 6-year-old Mr Speaker gelding went gate-to-wire in an April 20 allowance optional claimer, where he fended off a late rally from fellow Runhappy aspirant Stage Left to win by a neck. The victory was his ninth career trip to the winner's circle and first start since finishing a distant third in the restricted Tale of the Cat on August 10 at Saratoga Race Course.

After claiming Mr Phil from trainer Jim Ryerson last February, Atras saddled the talented bay to three straight wins, including a local seven-furlong allowance optional claimer where he earned a career-best 101 Beyer Speed Figure. He followed with a distant fifth to 2021 Champion Sprinter Jackie's Warrior in the Grade 2 True North in June at Belmont.

Mr Phil spent his downtime with Bruce Jackson at Fair Hill Training Center.

“I think the freshening really helped him. He was at Bruce Jackson's for a while and they always look good coming back from there. He put a good foundation underneath him so I didn't need to do too much to get him ready,” said Atras, who saddled Chateau to a runner-up effort in last year's Runhappy. “He had a big winter last year rattling off a few wins and then he met some pretty stiff competition. He tailed off in form just a little bit after that tough winter, so we gave him a little break and took care of a few things to try to get him back in form.”

Mr Phil was the pacesetter in all four of his victories for Atras. But nevertheless, Atras said he's not a horse that needs the lead. He came from off the front end in three of his wins for Ryerson.

“He does get quite brave on the front end, but I don't think he needs to be there,” Atras said. “If he can break sharp and be in the front, that's always a positive, but he has come from right off the pace before.”

Mr Phil, owned by Sanford Goldfarb, Madaket Stables, Jorge Casal and The Estate of Ira Davis, will break from post 6 under Manny Franco.

Trainer Butch Reid, Jr. will saddle the highly consistent Beren, who returns to Big Sandy for the first time since May 2021 when capturing both the Gold Fever and an off-the-turf edition of the Paradise Creek.

Owned by St. Omer's Farm and Christopher Feifarek, Beren has finished no worse than third in his last seven starts dating back to a 3 1/4-length score in the Jump Start in October against fellow Pennsylvania-breds at Parx Racing.

Beren, a seven-time stakes winner, has proven to be a well-traveled specimen having notched stakes victories over four different courses. In addition to Belmont and Parx, he won the Danzig in October 2021 at Penn National and the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash in July at Laurel Park.

“He's doing extremely well so we decided to take a shot,” Reid, Jr. said. “He's been fantastic and he's danced every dance and gives it his all every time he goes over there. He certainly doesn't need to take his racetrack with him. He handles it well. Parx has been a little deep lately, so that's one of the reasons I decided to send him over there. I think he'll handle the track well, especially if there's some rain. He likes an off track.”

Reid, Jr. spoke volumes of Beren's sire Weigelia, who was a multiple-graded stakes winning sprinter.

“I've had many of them over the years and they've all been cash cows,” Reid, Jr. said. “They're solid, solid horses that you can take anywhere.”

Beren is out of multiple graded-stakes winning Maryland-bred Silmaril, who won at least one stakes race for five consecutive years and banked just over $1 million in earnings.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. will pick up the mount aboard Beren from post 2.

Frank Fletcher Racing Operations' Candy Man Rocket will try to make amends following an uncharacteristic 10th in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap on April 15 at Oaklawn Park.

Following a narrow runner-up to Beren in the 2021 Gold Fever, the son of Candy Ride was out of action until the following February when capturing a seven-furlong Gulfstream Park allowance optional claimer in wire-to-wire fashion for Hall of Famer Bill Mott. Despite being forced to the sidelines once more, he earned a career-best 94 Beyer off an 11-month layoff with an allowance optional claiming win at the South Florida oval on January 21 before winning the Gulfstream Park Sprint on February 25.

Junior Alvarado will retain the mount from post 4.

Completing the field are Twisted Ride [post 3, Andy Hernandez], who rides a four-race win streak for trainer Michael Moore, and the David Jacobson-owned and trained Stage Left [post 5, Javier Castellano] – winner of the King T. Leatherbury at Laurel Park last out.

The Runhappy honors Jim McIngvale's 2015 Champion Sprinter, whose memorable victories include the Grade 1 King's Bishop [now the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial] at Saratoga, the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland and the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita.

The Runhappy is carded as Race 9 on Saturday's 11-race program, which also features the Grade 1, $600,000 Man o' War and the Grade 3, $200,000 Peter Pan. First post is 1:00 p.m. Eastern.

America's Day at the Races will present live coverage and analysis of the Belmont Park spring/summer meet on the networks of FOX Sports. For the broadcast schedule and channel finder, visit https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/tv-schedule/.

‘You Wish They Were All Like Her’: Hard Edge Seeks Winning Edge In Woodbine’s Whimsical

Hard Edge chases her first added-money win in Saturday's Grade 3 $150,000 Whimsical Stakes, at Woodbine.

Trained by Stuart Simon, Hard Edge will take on seven rivals, including multiple graded stakes winner and multiple 2022 Sovereign Award finalist (female sprinter, older main track female) Our Flash Drive, in the six-furlong Whimsical, a main track event for fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and upward.

A daughter of Hard Spun, Hard Edge went 2-3-1 from seven starts in 2022. Overall, the Chiefswood Stables' homebred is 3-5-2 from 11 career outings, with $220,890 (U.S.) in lifetime earnings.

The 5-year-old mare, who owns a 2-2-0 mark from four efforts at six furlongs, capped off her most recent campaign with a 3 ¾-length win over the distance on the Woodbine main last November.

The Whimsical will mark Hard Edge's first start of the year.

“You wish they were all like her,” praised Simon. “She's so easy to train and is very laid-back in her training. But every time the gate opens, she answers the bell. If they were all like her, it would be an easy game. She can be a little aggressive around the barn. She's not a pet, but she's just a good eater, a good doer, and does everything right. She's never too hard on herself.”

Hard Edge debuted in September 2021, finishing second in the 6 ½-furlong Tapeta race. She followed it up with a second and third before breaking her maiden that December courtesy of a gritty head score at 6 ½ panels over the Tapeta.

Her only previous stakes appearance came in last year's Sweet Briar Too Stakes, where she was fourth, only 1 ¾ lengths behind eventual champion female sprinter Hazelbrook, in the 6 ½-furlong Tapeta tilt for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up.

“She's been working well leading up to this. Usually, she's not a great work horse in the morning, but she has been this spring. She seems to be as good or better than she ever has. So, we're looking for a big race.”

Regular rider Eswan Flores gets the call.

First-race post time on Saturday is 1:10 p.m., with the Whimsical scheduled as the afternoon's eighth race. Fans can watch and wager on all the action via HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app.

Pletcher Sends Two In Search Of Record-Extending Fifth Peter Pan Victory

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will have two chances to secure a record-extending fifth victory in the Grade 3, $200,000 Peter Pan as he saddles Victorious Racing's Go Soldier Go and Whisper Hill Farm's Classic Catch in Saturday's nine-furlong test for sophomores at Belmont Park.

The Peter Pan is the traditional local prep for the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets on June 10. For information and details on hospitality offerings, ticket packages and pricing for the 2023 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, which features 16 stakes events from Thursday, June 8 through Saturday, June 10, visit BelmontStakes.com.

The talented Go Soldier Go, previously trained by Fawzi Nass, makes both his North American debut and first start for Pletcher off a fifth-place finish to Derma Sotogake, a next-out sixth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, in the Group 2 UAE Derby on March 25 at Meydan where he failed to fire and was defeated 15 lengths. It marked the only off-the-board finish for the chestnut son of Tapiture, who broke his maiden at allowance level in impressive fashion on February 5, closing from near the back of the six-horse field to take command with 250 meters to the finish and draw away to a 5 1/2-length score in the 1 3/16-mile route.

Go Soldier Go followed with a determined head victory in the Al Bastakiya going the same distance and landed the narrow win over Mr Raj. The $45,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase has breezed four times over the Belmont Park dirt training track since mid-April, most recently covering a half-mile in 48.81 seconds on Saturday.

Byron Hughes, Pletcher's Belmont-based assistant, said Go Soldier Go has made a good first impression.

“He's doing good and has settled in well,” said Hughes. “He's put in some good solid breezes and we're excited to see what he can do in the afternoon. He's a big, scopey horse and has a big, long stride to him. He's a good-looking horse and a good galloper. We're happy with him.”

Flavien Prat has the call from post 6.

Classic Catch adds blinkers as he looks to build off a closing fifth-place finish last out in the nine-furlong Grade 2 Wood Memorial presented by Resorts World Casino on April 8 at Aqueduct Racetrack where he made his stakes debut.

The Classic Empire colt, who has been on the board in 4-of-5 lifetime outings, stalked in 11th-of-12 through the first three points of call before advancing under urging from Trevor McCarthy in the turn and improving to sixth at the stretch call. He made up ground down the lane to finish 5 1/2 lengths behind the bunched up top trio of the victorious Lord Miles, runner-up Hit Show, and third-place stablemate Dreamlike. He was bested out of fourth by a head by Arctic Arrogance.

“He came out of the Wood in good shape and has been breezing steadily,” said Hughes. “We're excited about him and I thought he closed well to run a sneaky good race in the Wood. We're hoping he puts it all together in the Peter Pan. His coat and weight look good.”

The $110,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase broke his maiden at second asking going the Peter Pan distance in November at Aqueduct. He followed with a close third-place finish in a first-level allowance optional claimer going one mile and 40 yards at Tampa Bay Downs before finding the winner's circle again when stretching back out to nine furlongs in a March 2 optional claimer at Gulfstream Park.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. will ride from post 5.

Two-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner Brad Cox has also entered two contenders in the undefeated Bishops Bay [post 9, Florent Geroux] and graded stakes-placed Slip Mahoney [post 2, Joel Rosario], who is cross-entered in Saturday's Long Branch at Monmouth Park.

Spendthrift Farm, Steve Landers Racing, Martin Schwartz, Michael Dubb, Ten Strike Racing, Jim Bakke, Titletown Racing, Kueber Racing, Big Easy Racing, Winners Win, Michael Caruso and WinStar Farm's Bishops Bay makes his stakes debut off a prominent win in a one-mile and 70-yard optional claiming tilt on March 19 at Fair Grounds Race Course where he posted a neck victory over stablemate Demolition Duke.

The son of Uncle Mo was an impressive debut winner on February 18 over the same course when he scored a three-quarter-length victory over stablemate First Mission, who exited that race to win next out and take the Grade 3 Lexington two starts later. Bishops Bay earned a field-best 97 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

“He came in yesterday and had a gallop over the training track this morning,” said Dustin Dugas, Cox's Belmont assistant. “You couldn't ask for a horse to ship in any better. He got over the track well and they say he's been training very well down in Kentucky. He seems like a very kind horse and is easy to get along with.”

The $450,000 Keeneland September Yearling sale purchase is out of the multiple graded stakes-placed Pioneerof the Nile mare Catch My Drift, who also produced the multiple stakes-placed colt Strava.

Gold Square's Slip Mahoney was last seen finishing a troubled sixth in the Wood Memorial. The son of Arrogate was checked hard heading into the first turn and was forced to steady before making up ground down the backstretch and into the final turn before being defeated 7 1/4 lengths.

Slip Mahoney graduated at third asking in a one-mile maiden in January at Aqueduct and followed with an impressive runner-up effort to Raise Cain in the Grade 3 Gotham where he broke slow and tracked 11 lengths off the pace before showing a strong turn of foot under Trevor McCarthy and earning place honors.

Dugas said he was particularly impressed with Slip Mahoney's breeze on Saturday over the Belmont training track when he covered a half-mile in 47.29 in company with stakes-placed Capella.

“He had a huge breeze here this past week and I was very happy with it,” said Dugas. “I'm pleased with the way he came out of the work and the way he is coming into this race. He's always a high energy horse and he's hitting the track with good energy.”

The Del Mar Group's Henry Q makes his return to the barn of Doug O'Neill after a pair of stakes starts for trainer Todd Fincher. The Blame colt graduated in his third outing for O'Neill in a February maiden claimer at Santa Anita Park before heading to Sunland Park in New Mexico for a try at stakes company. He posted a dominant score in the February 28 Mine That Bird Derby when setting the pace for the 1 1/16 miles and drawing away to the 14 3/4-length victory geared down under Edwin Maldonado. He was awarded a 93 Beyer for the effort.

Henry Q stretched out to nine furlongs for his next outing in the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby almost one month later and set the pace again under Maldonado, but could not fend off the bids of Low Expectations to his inside and the victorious Wild On Ice to his outside. He swung to an outside path mid-turn and faded to finish third.

Henry Q has worked back four times since at Santa Anita, most recently covering five-eighths handily in 1:02.20 on Saturday.

Frankie Dettori has been tasked with the ride from post 8.

Waterford Stable's stakes-placed Kentucky homebred Summer Cause finished a close third last out when making his stakes debut in Laurel Park's nine-furlong Federico Tesio for conditioner Christophe Clement. The bay son of Summer Front closed well under Victor Carrasco from 6 1/2 lengths off the pace to make a four-wide bid and come up 1 1/4 lengths shy of winner Perform. The effort came on the heels of a fourth-out graduation by a half-length going the Peter Pan distance on February 26 at Gulfstream.

Manny Franco picks up the mount from post 4.

Completing the field are a trio of impressive maiden winners in Arcangelo [post 1, Javier Castellano] for conditioner Jena Antonucci; Game Change [post 3, Jose Ortiz] for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey; and the William Morey-trained Asmodeus [post 7, Trevor McCarthy].

The Peter Pan is slated as Race 6 on Saturday's 11-race card, which co-features the Grade 1, $600,000 Man o' War in Race 5 and the Grade 3, $175,000 Runhappy in Race 9. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

America's Day at the Races will present live coverage and analysis of the Belmont Park spring/summer meet on the networks of FOX Sports. For the broadcast schedule and channel finder, visit https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/tv-schedule/.

First Foal Out Of Daddys Lil Darling, Savethelastdance Impresses Ryan Moore With 22-Length Cheshire Oaks Victory

The first foal out of Grade 1 winner Daddys Lil Darling fired an impressive race at Chester on Wednesday, making her an early favorite for this year's 3-year-old fillies' Classic races in Europe. Savethelastdance, sired by Galileo, won the Cheshire Oaks by a margin of 22 lengths for trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore.

“I was very impressed, you can only be impressed by what she's done there,” Moore told the Racing Post. “They kind of all gave up with half a mile to go and she was just getting going, but she gave me a very good feel – she's probably given me as good a feel in this race as the ones I've ridden before.”

The next stop for Savethelastdance is likely to be the Epsom Oaks on Friday, June 2.

Daddys Lil Darling, trained by Ken McPeek in the United States, is a daughter of Scat Daddy who won the G1 American Oaks on turf, finished second in the G1 Kentucky Oaks and the G1 Ashland, both on dirt, and retired with earnings of $1,335,305 for owner/breeder Normandy Farm. Upon her retirement, Daddys Lil Darling was sold at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale, bringing a final bid of $3.5 million from Coolmore's M. V. Magnier.

Bred to Galileo in 2019, Daddys Lil Darling foaled Savethelastdance in Ireland on March 1, 2020. The filly ran fifth on debut as a 2-year-old, but has now won both her starts as a 3-year-old after breaking her maiden at Leopardstown on March 5.

Daddys Lil Darling has also produced a 2-year-old full brother to Savethelastdance, Mr Hampstead, which sold to Amo Racing for $575,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September sale.
