Easy as pie, right? All Kluger had to do was buy a horse for $30,000, drop him into a $10,000 claimer, and smile for the camera, even though losing him would be a sure thing.

2025 Preakness Stakes Winner Journalism Retired

Coolmore America and the ownership group of Journalism announced July 24 that the 2025 Preakness Stakes winner and earner of over $4.7 million will be retired following an injury he sustained in the starting gate prior to the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 18, a race he won by three-quarters of a length.

Horse racing has many different terms to measure margin of victory. Going from closest to largest, a horse can win by a nose, head, or neck, by fractions of a length, or by a length or more (a length is, as you might guess, the estimated length of a racehorse, roughly eight feet). But sometimes, there is no margin to measure – the horses reach the finish line equally together. When that happens, the familiar term “dead heat” is applied, usually after a several-minute wait while the racetrack stewards examine the finish line photo.
