Miss Yearwood Eclipses Stakes Record In Keertana At Churchill Downs

Miss Yearwood rallied from second to last and blitzed home down the stretch to defeat Lovely Princess by one length in Saturday's $223,678 Keertana Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Miss Yearwood stopped the teletimer in a stakes record 2:27.45 for 1½ miles over firm turf under Chris Landeros, who rode the winner for his father-in-law, trainer Ian Wilkes. and owner-breeder Roger Keith Long. She eclipsed the previous standard of 2:28.13 set by Al's Gal in 2016.

Miss Yearwood had one horse beat in the field of 12 fillies and mares as Exit Soul dictated the early pace of :23.40, :48.38 and 1:13.57. With five furlongs left to run, Sinfiltre put pressure on Exit Soul as they raced one mile in in 1:38.97 and approached the final turn. Miss Yearwood began to quickly pass horses around the last bend and soon shot to the front with a sweeping six-wide move at the head of the stretch. She collared Lovely Princess with a furlong to run en route to her first stakes triumph.

“The pace up front looked pretty honest,” Landeros said. “This horse just likes to make one run so I wanted to make sure to keep her in the clear and be in a good spot when we turned for home. She came with a huge run and really exploded late down the lane.”

The win was worth $130,320 and improved Miss Yearwood's career earnings to $438,780 with a record of 4-2-2 from 12 starts.

“Chris suits this filly well and she has one style to come from and that's from the back,” Wilkes said. “Most likely we'll end up at Saratoga with her. How we get there I'm not sure yet. She's shown a really sharp turn of foot in her last two efforts and we're very proud of her.”

Miss Yearwood returned $5.98 for the win as the 9-5 favorite. Lovely Princess, under Brian Hernandez Jr., finished 2 1/2 lengths in front of Sparkle Blue, ridden by Vincent Cheminaud, back in third.

Talbeyah was another 2 ¼ lengths back in fourth and was followed by Under One Sky, Viburnum, Quality Star, Lady Arsinoe, I'm So Sorry, Exit Soul, Implosion and Sinfiltre.

Miss Yearwood, a 4-year-old daughter of Will Take Charge out of the Awesome Again mare Satisfaction, was bred in Kentucky.

Queen Picasso Goes From Debut Winner To Graded Stakes Victress In Soaring Softly

Siena Farm, Michael Kisber, Peter Deutsch and The Elkstone Group's British-bred Queen Picasso swept past her pacesetting rival American Apple in midstretch to remain picture perfect through two starts in Saturday's $175,000 Soaring Softly (G3), a seven-furlong Widener turf sprint for sophomore fillies, at Belmont Park.

Trained by Christophe Clement and expertly piloted by Jose Ortiz, the Kingman bay made her stakes debut a winning one on the heels of a first-out graduation traveling 1 1/16 miles over the Gulfstream Park turf in March in similar stalking fashion with Ortiz in the irons.

Ortiz praised the work Clement has done between races to prepare Queen Picasso for her first start at a sprint distance.

“Christophe did a good job with her to get her to cut back to seven [furlongs], which is not easy,” Ortiz said. “She delivered, she's a nice filly.

“First time out, she broke really, really sharp,” Ortiz continued. “I just let somebody else go to the lead. Basically, I was taking a big hold of her. I knew cutting back wasn't going to be a big deal. Christophe trained her very sharp and she broke well. I just tried to save as much as I could for the end.”

Queen Picasso broke alertly from post 3 as Quarrel bobbled to her outside and American Apple rushed up to take charge to her inside and lead the compact field of five through an opening quarter-mile in :23.06 over the firm footing. Ortiz held Queen Picasso patiently in second to stalk one length off the pacesetter as the trio of Quarrel, Senior Prank and post-time favorite Lady Beth raced heads apart down the backstretch in a battle for third position.

American Apple was asked for more by Eric Cancel in the turn while Queen Picasso drew nearer on the outside to match stride with her foe approaching the top of the lane after a half-mile in :45.83. Lady Beth gave chase along the rail as the frontrunning pair began to draw clear of their rivals in the lane and make it a match race between them. A determined American Apple finally gave way nearing the eighth pole and Queen Picasso gained a slim advantage before kicking clear at the sixteenth pole and posting the two-length victory in a final time of 1:21.24.

American Apple held place honors by a neck over the oncoming Lady Beth. It was a further 2 3/4 lengths back to Quarrel, who finished fourth by a neck over Senior Prank. Love Appeals, the Clement-trained morning-line favorite, was scratched.

“Jose gave her a good ride. They told me a lot of them [Kingman progeny] get a mile, so she might be a miler,” said Clement, who also sent out Big Everest to victory in the Cliff Hanger at Monmouth Park just a half-hour before the Soaring Softly. “She won well. The only thing I told Jose was to be careful, she can be a touch aggressive and a touch rank. I think he was a bit worried that the horse on the lead would steal the race and that's the reason he kept at it.”

Ortiz said he knew he had to keep pressure on American Apple, who entered from a runner-up effort in the Mamzelle on May 3 at Churchill Downs and finished a hard-trying sixth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) in November at Keeneland.

“I let the three horse [American Apple] get away easy that first quarter, and I knew she had a good shot,” Ortiz said. “She [American Apple] ran a good race last time and ran a good race in the Breeders' Cup to only get beat seven lengths. I knew how good a filly she was. I let her go that first quarter and then I put a lot of pressure on her. She [Queen Picasso] got a little bit tired. The ground was heavy yesterday and I think it's still a little heavy today. We ran from the half-mile to the wire, I was putting pressure on the other horse. Eventually, she got a little bit tired, but she was ready.”

Clement said he would consider stretching out Queen Picasso to one-mile in the $150,000 Wild Applause on June 24 at Belmont and/or the $175,000 Lake George (G3) on July 21 at Saratoga Race Course.

“Let's see how she is. She can go for the Wild Applause, she can go for the Lake George,” Clement said. “She's 2-for-2, so let's enjoy that for a day or two and then go from there.”

Bred by D. Farrington and Canning Downs from the Danroad mare Aris, a half sister to Irish classic winner Again, Queen Picasso banked $96,250 in victory and boosted her total purse earnings to $138,250. She returned $7.70 on a $2 win wager.

Queen Picasso, a half sister to French Group 1 winner Aclaim, was a $285,241 purchase by BSW/Crow Euro Venture from the elite Book 1 offerings at the 2021 Tattersalls October yearling sale, where The National Stud consigned her.

Clement added that he will look to find another race for Love Appeals.

“She trained this morning and I didn't think she was 100 percent on the way back to the barn; it's not bad,” said Clement. “I just don't want to have that feeling when I go in a stake.”

Cancel, who rode American Apple to a victory in the Matron (G3) last fall at Belmont at the Big A, said the Daniel Leitch-trained filly would have benefitted from having a target.

“She's a very nice filly to ride. She's very straightforward,” Cancel said. “Today, I wish I had pace in front of me. I was the only speed, so I tried to take everything as easily as I could and she still ran a very good race. There were fast times and the filly that ran her down ran a tick better. But I'm happy with my filly's performance.”

Defunded, Country Grammer Give Baffert Strong Hand In Hollywood Gold Cup

Currently tied with the legendary Bald Eagle Charlie Whittingham with eight lifetime wins in the prestigious Grade 1, $400,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, Bob Baffert will seek to shatter yet another American racing standard on Monday as he sends out the potent one-two combination of Defunded and Country Grammer as a field of six 3-year-olds and up go a mile and one quarter at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

With the immortal Seabiscuit winning the inaugural running at Hollywood Park in 1938, the Gold Cup will be run for the 85th time on Monday's Memorial Day program.  Baffert, whose first Gold Cup win came with Real Quiet in 1999, notched his most recent win with Country Grammer at Santa Anita in 2021.

A 5-year-old gelding by Dialed In, Defunded comes off a facile three-length win at 1-5 odds in the 1 1/8-mile G2 Californian on April 22 and in a tough call, gets top billing with a solid recent race to his credit.  Second in last year's Gold Cup, Defunded showed a new dimension in winning the Californian, as he hopped at the break and was thus required to settle well off the pace and rally for the win.

On or near the early lead in most of his races, Defunded, with the Californian victory in-hand, approaches this year's Gold Cup at the absolute top of his game.  A winner of the G1 Awesome Again Stakes at 1 1/8 miles five starts back on Oct. 1, Defunded seeks his fourth graded stakes win on Monday.

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Defunded has a win and a second place finish at a mile and one quarter and is 16-6-4-2 overall with earnings of $1,348,100.

Second two years in a row in the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1)  and a winner of last year's $12 million Dubai World Cup, Country Grammer ranks as the fifth-leading Thoroughbred money earner with $14,897,320.

A narrow second two starts back in the Saudi Cup Feb. 25, Country Grammer was never a factor when beaten 13 ¾ lengths in the Dubai World Cup March 25.

A smashing 4 ½-length winner of the G2 San Antonio Stakes three starts back on Dec. 26, Country Grammer, who was ridden in his last three starts by the now-departed Frankie Dettori, will get the services of Flavien Prat, who was aboard for Country Grammer's 2021 Gold Cup victory.

Owned by Zedan Racing Stables, Inc., Winstar Farm, LLC and Commonwealth Thoroughbreds, LLC, Country Grammer, 6-year-old full horse by Tonalist out of the Forestry mare Arabian Song, has two wins and three seconds from seven tries at a mile and one quarter and is 16-5-6-1 overall.

New Mexico-based trainer Todd Fincher will have his first Gold Cup starter as he saddles Senor Buscador, a G3 winner going one mile at Churchill Downs four starts back on Oct. 1.  Most recently a close fourth to Mike Stidham's multiple graded stakes winning Proxy in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap at 1 1/8 miles April 22, Senor Buscador, a 5-year-old full horse by Mineshaft, will be trying a mile and one quarter for the first time.

Out of the Desert God mare Rose's Desert, Senor Buscador was bred in Kentucky by Joe Peacock Sr. and his son, Joe Jr., who is also the owner.  A winner of five of his 10 starts, he has earnings of $479,427.

Back On Home Turf, Queen Goddess Faces Six Rivals In Monday’s Gamely

Queen Goddess will take aim at a second Grade 1 win for trainer Michael McCarthy when she takes on six rivals in Monday's Grade 1, $400,000 Gamely Stakes going 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Queen Goddess won the G3 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Gulfstream Park in her 5-year-old bow Jan. 28 then returned to be sixth when sent to Keeneland for the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley on April 15. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partner and Gary Barber, Queen Goddess has won half of her 12 starts with three additional board hits for $769,080 in earnings. Her biggest win came in the 2021 G1 American Oaks, which was washed off the turf and moved to the main track.

Queen Goddess is by Empire Maker out of stakes-placed winner Royal Story, by Lemon Drop Kid. She will be ridden by eastern-based jockey Luis Saez, who comes to town after being aboard for both the Jenny Wiley and Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

The chief rivals to Queen Goddess look to be Macadamia and Quattroelle, who have split a pair of decisions when running 1-2 in their two most recent starts.

In the G3 Wilshire at a mile on turf here April 30, Macadamia beat Quattroelle by a length to earn her first stakes victory for top turf trainer Phil D'Amato, who also has School Dance entered in the Gamely. Owned by R Unicorn Stable, Macadamia is a 5-year-old mare by Hat Trick.

Jockey Tiago Pereira, who has ridden Macadamia in her last three starts, will again be in the irons Monday.

Prior to coming up a length short in the Wilshire, Quattroelle had reeled off consecutive graded-stakes wins for trainer Jeff Mullins. She beat Macadamia by a half-length here March 4 in the G2 Buena Vista and prior to that won the G3 Megahertz, both going a mile on turf. Owned by Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, Quattroelle has a record of 5-4-4 in 16 starts with $432,772 in earnings.

Jockey Hector Berrios, who has been aboard for Quattroelle's last seven starts, again has the call on Monday.

The new shooter in the field is Irish-bred Viareggio, who invades from the east for trainer Brendan Walsh. A 4-year-old filly by Caravaggio, Viareggio won her only U.S. start when taking a first-level allowance at Keeneland going 1 1/16 miles on turf April 21.

Viareggio is owned by Hunter Valley Farm, Debra L. O'Connor, Mrs. Paul Shanahan and Marc Detampel. She will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli.
