Kentucky Oaks Victress Pretty Mischievous Pleases Walsh In Acorn Tune-Up

Godolphin's Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous put together her final piece of work in preparation for Friday's $500,000 Acorn (G1), working a half-mile over the Belmont Park main track for trainer Brendan Walsh.

Under mostly cloudy skies, the Into Mischief bay visited the main track at about 6:45 a.m. (ET) and covered four furlongs in :47.87 in company to the inside of multiple graded stakes-placed stablemate Gilmore [:47.87].

Walsh expressed satisfaction with the move and said Pretty Mischievous is a filly that does things easily.

“That's typical of her,” Walsh commented. “I think she even went :47 and 4 in her work before the Oaks as well. She's been doing well since then. Everything seems spot on for her.”

Prior to her Kentucky Oaks conquest, Pretty Mischevious was second to Southlawn in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 25 at its namesake track after triumphs in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra and Untapable at the New Orleans oval.

The Acorn, which is run at a one-turn 1 1/16 miles for sophomore fillies, will be Pretty Mischievous' first start going one turn since she defeated winners in a seven-furlong allowance optional claimer on October 30 at Churchill Downs. She won her debut going 6 1/2 furlongs over the same surface.

Walsh expressed no concern in cutting back to one turn.

“I don't think it'll be a problem at all,” Walsh said. “It should work out well for her. She has plenty of natural speed, which is required in this type of race.”

A Kentucky homebred, Pretty Mischievous is out of the Grade 1-winning Tapit mare Pretty City Dancer and is a direct descendant of influential matriarch La Troienne.

Auguste Rodin Provides O’Brien Ninth Epsom Derby Triumph

Coolmore partners' homebred Auguste Rodin provided trainer Aidan O'Brien a record-extending ninth triumph in the Epsom Derby (G1) Saturday as he unleashed a furious bid in the straight, reeled in front-running Kentucky-bred longshot King of Steel, and edged ahead in the final 100 yards.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, the Irish-bred colt by Japan's greatest stallion, Deep Impact, won by a half length, rebounding with aplomb from an unplaced finish in the 2000 Guineas (G1) May 6 at Newmarket.

Moore had Auguste Rodin had ideally positioned in midfield Saturday as stablemates Adelaide River and San Antonio scrambled to the front and set the tempo into the straight. Kevin Stout, likewise, bided his time with King of Steel, who relaxed in midpack to the inside before making good headway three furlongs out, then charging to the lead with a quarter mile to run and opening a two-length advantage. Auguste Rodin was full of run, however, and willingly responded on cue from Moore. He steadily wore down King of Steel with ground-devouring strides and burst to the front in the final 100 yards to get the victory.

Auguste Rodin covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:33.88 on turf rated as good to firm. His 4-1-0 record from six career starts includes his Futurity Trophy (G1) as a 2-year-old last October at Doncaster.

King of Steel, off at 66-1, held on for second. The colt by Coolmore's Irish-based stallion Wootten Bassett was a $200,000 Keeneland September yearling sale purchase by AMO Racing UK from consignor Gainesway. He was seventh behind Auguste Rodin in the Futurity Trophy after an impressive debut victory at Nottingham. He entered Saturday's historic classic in his 2023 debut, having not raced for 224 days.

White Birch was 4 3/4 lengths back in third. Arrest, the 4-1 favorite under Frankie Dettori, finished 10th after racing prominently early on.

Auguste Rodin was produced by the Galileo mare Rhododendron, a five-time Group 1 winner and a daughter of Irish classic winner Halfway To Heaven. Rhododendron is a half sister to two-time Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) runner-up Magical, a seven-time Group 1 winner.

O'Brien won his first Epsom Derby in 2001 with Galileo and his most recent prior to Saturday's edition was in 2020 with Serpentine.

Major Dude Proves Best In Penn Mile; Malleymoo Wires Oaks Field

Adding a third graded stakes victory to his growing resume, Spendthrift Farm's Bolt d'Oro colt Major Dude overcame some traffic problems approaching the far turn before rallying under Irad Ortiz Jr. to a three-quarter length victory over Behind Enemy Lines in Friday evening's Grade 2 $400,000 Penn Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds at Penn National race course.

The Penn Mile was one of six stakes races offering purses of $950,000 on the Grantville, Pa., track's biggest night of the year. In the 3-year-old fillies' counterpart to the Penn Mile, Rockingham Ranch, David Bernsen, Talla Racing and JWS Racing's Malleymoo – trained by Jack Sisterson –  scored a half-length front-running victory over Metaphysical.

Sent off the 2-5 favorite in a field of eight, the Todd Pletcher-trained Major Dude paid $2.80 after completing the mile on firm turf in 1:33.73. Behind Enemy lines, ridden by Flavien Prat, moved to the lead on the turn for home but could not withstand the stretch charge by Major Dude. He was 4 1/2 lengths clear of Fletcher, who was followed by pace-setting Recruiter, Movisitor, Candidate, Tuskegee Airmen, and Upstate and Back.

Ortiz put Major Dude in a ground-saving position while in third, but had to tap on the brakes and was shuffled back entering the far turn. He rallied the colt three wide into the stretch and took command in the final furlong.

We kind of squeezed and shuffled back there on the turn, and and Irad got him out in the clear,” said Pletcher assistant Stu Hampton. “Once he found clear running, he did it all himself. He's a really cool horse to be around and obviously a really talented horse. Hopefully, he'll have a big rest of his 3-year-old year.”

Major Dude raced on dirt in his first three races at 2, then excelled in his first turf start in the G2 Pilgrim at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet last Oct. 2. He won the G3 Kitten's Joy at Gulfstream in February, finished second to Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's on the all-weather track at Turfway in the Jeff Ruby, then was a close third to Webslinger in his last start, the G2 American Turf at Churchill Downs on Derby day. Ortiz has ridden him each race since the Pilgrim.

“I've been on him and he's great,” Ortiz said. “The one mile, flat, is beautiful for him. He appreciates the distance. The last time, a mile and a sixteenth, was a tough race. He just got beat and fought all the way to the wire. They were nice horses. It was a war to the wire and he kept fighting. He's always been nice. He always shows up. He's got a big heart and he shows it on the track.”

“It's huge,” Hampton said of the Penn Mile win. “Obviously, he's by a stallion that Spendthrift stands themselves [Bolt d'Oro], and, hopefully, we can add one with a Grade 1 in front of him at some point, but a graded states for a 3-year-old colt is a huge accolade. We're very happy to get the notch.”

Bred by Clearsky Farms, Major Dude was a $550,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling purchase.

Malleymoo, a filly by the late English Channelm was bred by Calumet Farm and sold as a yearling for $112,000 at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's October sale. She raced once in Ireland, winning a 14-filly race at Dundalk where she was trained by Joseph O'Brien. She then came to the U.S., where she was winless in four starts before the Penn Oaks.

Trevor McCarthy put Malleymoo on the lead, got away with soft fractions of :24.37, :49.45 and 1:12.81 for the first six furlongs, then she fought off a stretch-long challenge from Metaphysical and Adam Beschizza. Princess Bettina finished third under Prat, with Majestic Creed fourth and 4-5 favorite Royalty Interest trailing the field of five. Final time was 1:34.89.

Malleymoo paid $24.20 as the second-longest price in the field.
