Fiske: Gunite Could Have Race Prior To BC Sprint; Echo Zulu Could Train Up To BC Filly & Mare Sprint

To be the champ, you have to beat the champ. And Winchell Thoroughbreds, in collaboration with trainer Steve Asmussen, did just that with two Gun Runner progeny in a pair of Grade 1 events on the Travers Day program at Saratoga Race Course.

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Gunite kicked off Grade 1 action when turning the tables on reigning champion male sprinter Elite Power in the Forego going seven furlongs. Piloted by Tyler Gaffalione, the dark bay colt set an easy early tempo and fended off Elite Power's inside rally to win by 1 3/4 lengths and register a 101 Beyer Speed Figure – his eighth triple-digit number to date.

The redeeming triumph came following the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) on July 29 at the Spa, where he appeared poised for victory at the top of the stretch but couldn't fend off the late outside rally of Elite Power, who won by a head.

The win was a second Grade 1 victory for Gunite, who captured the 2021 Hopeful at Saratoga by 5 3/4 lengths. He has never finished worse than second at Saratoga in six starts.

David Fiske, the racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds, spoke of Gunite's consistency and compared him to his multiple stakes-winning New York-bred millionaire Bankit.

“He's just such a cool horse. He always shows up, he's always dependable,” Fiske said. “He's like the new Bankit. You can always depend on him. So far, he's never let us down. To see him get another Grade 1; one as a 2-year-old, one as a 4-year-old; and head to the Breeders' Cup for the second year in a row is satisfying and gratifying. He's so cool and I was so glad to watch him get it done.”

Fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Keeneland, Gunite will target this year's Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park and will likely have one more start beforehand.

While the $250,000 Vosburgh (G2) on September 30 at Belmont at the Big A and the $350,000 Phoenix (G2) on October 6 at Keeneland – both “Win And You're In” events for the Sprint – are both logical next targets for Gunite, Fiske did not rule out the $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) on September 30 as a possible next start.

“We haven't talked about it, but that could be a possibility,” Fiske said. “I know that Steve has a habit of shipping early, whether it's to California for the Breeders' Cup or Dubai for the World Cup (G1). Curlin went to Dubai about two months before and even got a race in over there beforehand. It's not out of the realm of possibility.”

While Gunite will likely race once before his Breeders' Cup endeavor, Echo Zulu is likely to train up to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1)  after she secured a “Win and You're In” berth in the Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga.

Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds in partnership with L and N Racing, Echo Zulu defeated last year's champion female sprinter and defending Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Goodnight Olive, who also won last year's Ballerina.

Like Gunite, Echo Zulu also set an early tempo down the backstretch and kept Goodnight Olive at bay in upper stretch before strolling home a 2 1/2-length winner over Goodnight Olive, with two-time Grade 1 winner Matareya completing the trifecta.

Echo Zulu produced a 112 Beyer, which is the co-highest figure recorded by any thoroughbred this year. She registered the same number when capturing the Honorable Miss (G2) on July 26 at the Spa by 7 1/4 lengths. Godolphin's Cody's Wish earned a 112 Beyer when capturing the Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan (G1) on June 10 at Belmont Park.

“Obviously, we all knew she was fast. A 112 Beyer is the fastest number anyone has run this year and she did it two times in a row. To do that a second time, that was pretty impressive,” Fiske said. “She's a little bit different than Gunite. Steve said Gunite would probably run again before the Breeders' Cup. Echo seems to run well when fresh and yesterday was kind of a third race in a cycle. Steve may just wait and train her up to the Breeders' Cup.”

Echo Zulu, the 2021 champion 2-year-old filly, was second in last year's Filly and Mare Sprint, where she drew post 13 and was five wide in the through the turn, finishing 2 1/2 lengths behind Goodnight Olive.

“Last year in the Breeders' Cup, Echo Zulu was a little disadvantaged by post position and how the race shaped up. It just didn't break her way that day, but she still ran a good second. Yesterday was an excellent race,” Fiske said. “In the filly and mare sprint division there aren't many Grade 1s, so if Echo Zulu can win again, she's probably the Eclipse winner. I would think if Gunite could win the Sprint, he would be the champion.”

Last year, Winchell and Asmussen enjoyed their first Travers (G1) victory when Epicenter strolled home a 5 1/4-length winner en route to champion 3-year-old colt honors. They took home the silver medal this time around when graded stakes-winner Disarm launched a strong inside rally, finishing one length behind the victorious Arcangelo. The effort, his first in blinkers, garnered a career-high 103 Beyer.

“He just seems to get incrementally better,” Fiske said. “[The blinkers] didn't hurt. It's hard to say how much of a difference they made because he did run some pretty credible races without the blinkers. I suspect he'll run back with them because like I said, they didn't hurt him at all.”

Fiske mentioned the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) on September 23 at Parx Racing as a possibility for Disarm, who achieved millionaire status with his Travers effort.

“We really weren't having that discussion last night, so I'd say all options are on the table,” Fiske said. “Going into the race, there was some talk about the Pennsylvania Derby. I think we were kicking around either [two-time winner] Magic Tap or Disarm as to who might be our Pennsylvania Derby horse. We'll talk this week, regroup and come up with some sort of plan.

Inspirational Debut Winner Carson’s Run Steps Up To Graded Competition In With Anticipation

West Point Thoroughbreds and Steven Bouchey's Carson's Run brings a strong debut win for trainer Christophe Clement over a route of ground into Thursday's $175,000 With Anticipation (G3), a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for juveniles at Saratoga Race Course.

The son of Cupid arrives at his first test against winners from a determined neck triumph on July 29 at the Spa, where he traveled five lengths off the pace under Dylan Davis and steadily made up ground over the With Anticipation's distance to challenge for the lead at the top of the lane. The talented chestnut dueled gamely with Moonlight down the stretch before taking a slim advantage at the wire and completing the course in 1:44.40.

Carson's Run has worked back three times since his victory, most recently covering five furlongs in 1:03.25 over the Oklahoma turf training track on Thursday.

“He had a good work on the grass the other day. He's trained very forwardly and we're looking forward to running him again here at Saratoga,” said Miguel Clement, son and assistant to Christophe Clement. “Dylan has been breezing him in the mornings. He's always been high on the horse from Day One. The horse has a good turn of foot, and I wouldn't swap positions with anyone else heading into this race.”

Carson's Run will have plenty of support on Thursday as friends and supporters of his namesake, Carson Jost, rally around colt and his attempt at becoming racing's latest graded stakes winner. Jost, 30, suffers from a genetic condition called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. His father, Wade Jost, is a longtime friend of West Point Thoroughbreds' President and CEO Terry Finley and is a partner in the horse's ownership.

Carson's Run is out of the winning Henny Hughes mare Hot N Hectic, a half-sister to multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Rated R Superstar. His second dam, Wicked Wish, is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Wishful Tomcat and multiple stakes-winner Uncle T Seven.

Davis will look to pilot Carson's Run to victory from post 8.

Clement will also send out debut maiden runner-up Spirit Prince [post 2, Flavien Prat] for owners Oakwood Stables, Scott Krase, Donarra Thoroughbreds, Kenneth Beitz and Gail Beitz. The gray son of Cairo Prince, who adds blinkers, finished a closing second in the 1 1/16-mile maiden on July 22, finishing just a half-length back of the victorious Noted, who exited that race to win Monmouth Park's one-mile Sapling on Saturday. He was a $110,000 purchase at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Les Wagner's graded stakes-placed Market Street tries turf for the first time after a distant runner-up effort to Rhyme Schemes in the Grade 2 Herb Moelis Memorial Saratoga Special on August 12. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, the son of Street Sense established early command under Jaime Torres, but could not fend off the strong turn of foot from Rhyme Schemes and was defeated 9 1/2 lengths.

Market Street makes his third appearance at the Spa this summer, his other start a pacesetting sixth in the Grade 3 Sanford on July 15. He was an impressive debut winner in June at Ellis Park when setting the pace in a five-furlong maiden tilt and drawing clear to a 3 3/4-length score.

A $475,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Market Street is out of the Quality Road mare Quality Way, a half-sister to graded stakes-winner Super Ninety Nine, as well as multiple stakes-winner Elusive Horizon. He will emerge from post 4 under Javier Castellano.

Trainer Bill Mott will be represented by two debut winners in Carem Stables' Get Spooled [post 5, Jose Lezcano] and Arnmore Thoroughbreds and Even Keel Thoroughbreds' Gala Brand [post 1, Jose Ortiz].

Get Spooled, a New York-bred son of Hard Spun, was a determined winner traveling the With Anticipation distance on August 3 against fellow state-breds, scoring the wire-to-wire triumph by three-quarter lengths over next-out winner Dancing Mischief. His dam, the Street Cry mare Cuccidati, is a half-sister to turf stakes winner Spycraft, as well as the stakes-placed Cave Run. Get Spooled, bred by Waterville Lake Stable, was purchased for $230,000 at the Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga New York-bred Yearling Sale.

Gala Brand, a chestnut Violence filly, will take on the boys on the heels of a deep-closing victory in a restricted maiden special weight on August 3 sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs. She rallied from 14 lengths off the pace impressively under Jose Lezcano to chase four-wide into turn and kick clear in the lane to a 2 1/4-length score that was awarded a field-best 71 Beyer Speed Figure. Out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Lord of England mare Olorda, Gala Brand was a $30,000 purchase at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Completing the field are Wine Collector [post 3, Ricardo Santana, Jr.], who won at third asking for conditioner Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon; maiden runner-up British Sea [post 6, Manny Franco] for trainer Mike Maker; and debut maiden winner Nomos [post 7, Irad Ortiz Jr.] for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Abeliefinthislivin Notches First Stakes Victory In Canadian Derby

Peter Redekop's Abeliefinthislivin, a maiden winner at Santa Anita before a brief and unfruitful venture on the U.S. Triple Crown trail this spring, found a Derby success north of the border Saturday evening when scoring a 2½-length triumph in the Canadian Derby (G3) at Century Mile Racetrack in Edmonton.

The race, Alberta's premier event for 3-year-olds, is second leg of the Western Canadian Triple Crown, and Abeliefinthislivin, fourth to Reincarnate in the Los Alamitos Derby July 8 in his previous start for trainer Peter Miller, proved up to the task under Amadeo Perez.

Benefitting from swift fractions set by Manitoba Derby runner-up Heroic Move, Abeliefinthislivin was five lengths off the pace under a snug hold heading to the final turn in the 1 1/4-mile contest. He was eager to run when given the cue at the quarter pole, reeled in Heroic Move in the stretch, and powered clear.

Sent off the favorite, Abeliefinthislivin returned $5.40 after finishing the trip in 2:03 flat on a fast track. American Blaze got up to take second, Accidental Hero overtook Heroic Move for third in the 12-horse field.

The Canadian Derby marked the second victory from eight starts for Abeliefinthislivin, a Kentucky-bred son of Arrogate who Alistair Roden Bloodstock bought for $70,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services consigned him. He joined the stable of Barbara Heads a couple of weeks before the Canadian Derby.

Bred by Merriebelle Stable LLC, the gray colt is out of the Pulpit mare Half A. P. His second dam, Half Queen, by Deputy Minister, produced 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Halfbridled.

The Western Canadian Triple Crown began Aug. 7 with Mano Dura taking the Manitoba Derby. The series concludes with the British Columbia Derby (G3)  Sept. 16 at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.

After Meetings With Horsemen, Jockeys, and Vets, Saratoga to Continue With Racing Sunday

After the on-track deaths of two racehorses on its Saturday card prompted a series of meetings with interested parties, the racing card will continue as scheduled Sunday at Saratoga as planned, according to a release from NYRA's Vice President of Communications, Patrick McKenna.

“Sunday's live racing program will proceed as scheduled following a series of productive meetings held with horsemen, jockeys, and veterinarians last night and throughout the morning,” read an emailed statement. “Based on these conversations and ensuing dialogue, NYRA is confident in the safety and overall consistency of the racing surfaces.”

On Saturday's Travers Day card, Nobel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) broke down in the fifth race while galloping out on the turf, and New York Thunder (Nyquist) broke down when on his way to an apparent victory in the GI Allen Jerkens Memorial S. on the dirt.
