Irish-bred Fev Rover, fresh off a victory in the Beverly D. (G1T), is back to defend her title in the $200,000 Canadian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2T), Saturday at Woodbine.

Owned by Tracy Farmer, Fev Rover heads into the about 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, off an authoritative score in the in the $500,000 Beverly D. Taking command early with Javier Castellano aboard, the well-travelled mare set modest fractions and then fired home to notch a 3 ½-length triumph in the 1 3/16-mile race. ​

With the win, the 5-year-old Gutaifan (IRE) mare earned an automatic berth into the $2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) this November at Santa Anita Park.

Dual hall of fame trainer Mark Casse is effusive in his praise of Fev Rover, who launched her 2023 campaign with a dominant effort in the one-mile Nassau (G2T) on July 1 at Woodbine before heading to the U.S. for her next two races.

“Honestly, I've just been over the moon with all three of her performances this year,” said Casse. “I sat and watched the Nassau with my mouth open, seeing the ease with which she was able to win. And then we went to the Diana (G1T) on July 15. We were coming back kind of quick, but she was training so well. She's a beautiful, powerful filly. She is tough. I thought we got a little unlucky in the Diana. Flavien (jockey, Prat) did a great job of keeping Javier (Castellano) stuck down on the rail with nowhere to go. When he finally got out, she came running and just got beat by a half-length.”

Fev Rover, at 3-5, got back on the winning track in the Beverly D.

“Javier and I were flying to Colonial Downs, and we were talking about the race,” started Casse. “He said, 'There's no speed in this race.' I agreed and told him that she can go right to the lead. The nice thing about her, and (champion and dual hall of fame mare) Tepin was the same way, is that a great horse can bring their A-game no matter the situation. So, we went right to the lead, and it was over when that happened.” ​ ​ ​ ​

After a prosperous career in France at age 2 and 3, where she won two stakes, one a Group 2, and placed in three other group races, including twice at the top level, Fev Rover was bought by Farmer in late 2021 for the equivalent of $971,704 (U.S.) from the Musley Bank Stables consignment to the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

The North American chapter of Fev Rover's career began at Woodbine last July when she finished second in the Dance Smartly (G2T). One month later, she gutted out a nose win in the Canadian, and then was fourth, placed third, after a troubled trip in the E.P. Taylor (G1T) on October 8.

She brings a 5-4-3 mark and $948,776 in earnings from 17 starts into the Canadian.

“I wanted to get her back to Woodbine,” said Casse. “I wanted two more races into her before the Breeders' Cup. I thought the E.P. Taylor (G1T, on October 8) would be a good one for her, and I would like to try and win that. I thought the race this Saturday would set up nicely for her. I like the timing of it. Plus, I wanted to get her back to Woodbine because she loves to train over the Tapeta.” ​ ​

Casse will also send out Talbeyah, another Irish-bred owned by Farmer.

The 5-year-old daughter of Lope de Vega (IRE)-Thai Haku (IRE) is 3-0-0 from 13 starts.

“She's a nice filly in her own right,” said Casse. “She's not on the same level as Fev Rover, but she's certainly a nice one.”

Moira, Canada's reigning horse of the year, 2023 Dance Smartly (G2T) winner Miss Dracarys, graded stakes winner Skims (GB), multiple graded stakes winner Atomic Blonde (GER), and graded stakes-placed Ready Lady will also go postward.

Saturday's 12-race card at Woodbine also includes the running of the $150,000 Pattison Singspiel Stakes (G3T).

The world-renowned E.P. Taylor turf will play host to the 1 ¼-mile Singspiel, a race for 3-year-olds and upward that has drawn eight hopefuls, including Malibu Mambo.

A 6-year-old son of Point of Entry-Polyantha Rose, Malibu Mambo heads into his first stakes race since running third in the 2021 Dominion Day (G3) on a winning note.

Sent off at 4-1 in the 1 ¼-mile race over a “good” E.P. Taylor turf on August 12, the dark bay, under a sharp ride by David Moran, led by a half-length at the stretch call and then powered on to a 1 ½-length victory.

“He ran the whole way and was full of run at the end, which was nice,” said trainer Mike Doyle, who co-owns the gelding with Dura Racing. “It was the perfect race, where he sat off them and it worked out well. He didn't win easily, but he drew off at the end a bit, so it was good from that point of view.”

Malibu Mambo made a winning debut on August 31, 2019, a 2 ¼-length triumph at seven panels on the Woodbine Tapeta.

Bred by Adena Springs, Malibu Mambo is 4-5-4 from 18 starts and has purse earnings of $293,315 (U.S.).

“He's doing well and we're taking a shot,” said Doyle. “He's run well all three times this year. The first start, he got very tired, the second start, he got a little tired. He's a big, huge horse, so it took a while to get him ready. He's also had a few issues, which we have taken care of.”

With David Moran sidelined by injury, Dylan Davis gets the call on Saturday. ​ ​

Other starters include multiple graded stakes winner Rockemperor (IRE), trained by Chad Brown, and 2021 Woodbine Mile (G1T) winner Town Cruise.

Dual hall of fame trainer Roger Attfield has won eight editions of the Singspiel, including five consecutive victories, from 2009-13. He sends out defending champion Ready for the Lady in this year's running.

The race is named after the Irish-bred son of In the Wings (GB), whose nine victories in 20 lifetime starts included the 1996 Canadian International Stakes.

First race post time on Saturday is set for 1:05 p.m. Fans can wager on all the action via HPIbet.com, bet365, and the Dark Horse Bets app.

The largest field in 21 years will hit the dirt oval in Fort Erie for the 88th Prince of Wales Stakes on Sept. 12.

All 11 nominations plus a supplemental horse will be loaded into the gate for a 12-horse race. They'll be taking a run at the $400,000 stakes, the largest purse run on a dirt track in Canada.

To make things even more exciting, there will also be a Canadian Triple Crown contender in the mix, with Paramount Prince heading down from Woodbine to take a shot at the crown.

Following his impressive win at the King's Plate in August, the favorite remains Paramount Prince, who was at 8-5 for the morning line odds during the post position draw on Sept. 7. Paramount Prince drew the number eight gate position which puts him near the middle of the pack.

He'll have to contend with Velocitor just two gates over in the number 10 position, who will be looking for a rematch after finishing fourth in the Plate. At 6-1, the oddsmakers think both Velocitor and fellow Plate contender Stanley House (4-1) have a good shot at dethroning Paramount Prince.

Prince of Wales Stakes drawmaster Larry Attard was on hand Thursday to pick the post positions and offer up advice for would-be Triple Crown contender Paramount Prince.

“The first thing you need is the right horse, because without that, you won't be going anywhere,” said Attard, who knows a thing or two about the Triple Crown, having won two of the three races during his prestigious career. Attard won the Queen's Plate in 1983, and the Prince of Wales Stakes twice, in 1992 and 1995.

“The other thing you need is confidence,” said Attard. “You have to come in here with a lot of confidence and ride the horse and give 100 per cent while trying to make no mistakes, because one little mistake can cost you the whole race.”

The field is rounded out by Cool Kiss (8-1), Stayhonor Goodside (10-1), Twin City (12-1), Kakokaipuu (12-1), Tiburon (15-1), Ottawa (20-1), Morstachy's (30-1), Trinity Park (30-1), and Armaline (30-1).

Live racing for the big event begins at 1 p.m., with the Prince of Wales Stakes hitting the oval around 5:30 p.m.

The track will have food trucks on hand to keep the crowd fed as they take in the Prince of Wales, and the four other stakes races that day, including the Molson Cup, Le Cinquieme Essai Cup, The Rondeau Bay Stakes, and The Lake Erie Stakes.

Patricia's Hope's Nobals, winner of six stakes including the Grade 2 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes at Churchill Downs May 6, leads a field of ​10 horses entered in Saturday's $150,000 Korbel Da Hoss Stakes at Colonial Downs, one of six turf stakes on the New Kent County Virginia Day program. The six stakes races combined feature purse money of $1.3 million. There are 11 races on the Saturday card which starts at 1:30 P.M.

Nobals is a Larry Rivelli trainee who is eight for 16 lifetime with earnings of $843,274. The 4-year-old Noble Mission gelding was second most recently in the G3 Troy Stakes at Saratoga and just prior, scored in the William Garrett Handicap at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Nobals will be ridden by Pablo Morales from post ​eight.

Philip Gleaves, Joseph Straus Jr. and Hugh Fitzsimons' Yes and Yes has finished second in three different stakes this year — the Select Stakes at Monmouth, Van Clief at Colonial and Elusive Quality at Belmont. The 7-year-old Sidney's Candy gelding was runner-up in the 2022 Da Hoss Stakes and on June 10 this year, competed in the G1 Jaipur at Belmont. The David Donk trainee will leave from post six with Jose Gomez up.

Penny Lauer's Strong Tide and Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher's Temple both bring impressive credentials into the $150,000 Biosaphe Colonial Cup which attracted a field of 11 that will battle over 1½ miles.

The former is fresh off a win in the Bucchero Handicap at Horsehoe Indianapolis and earlier this year took an impressive third in the G1 Man o'War Stakes at Belmont. The 6-year-old English Channel gelding also competed in the G1 Arlington Million August 12 in New Kent where he finished ninth. The latter has been stakes placed in four of his last eight including a win in the G2 Mac Diarmida at Gulfstream Park in March 2022 and a runner-up in the G3 Sycamore last October. The Mike Maker trainee has just one start this year. The pair will be ridden respectively by Cristian Torres​ and Jose Ortiz and will leave from posts nine and six.

Head of Plains Partners' Sy Dog should also attract attention from bettors. The Graham Motion trainee won the G3 Transylvania Stakes last year as a 3-year-old and though he has not won since, had solid outings in a pair of Grade 1 races, the Belmont Derby and Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes. Most recently, the Slumber colt took second in the John's Call Stakes at Saratoga August 23. Flavien Prat will ride from post 10.

The $125,000 Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes is for 2-year-olds and has attracted a field of 11 sprinters. Bregman Family Racing and WWBD's No Nay Mets is the only entrant that has a stakes victory on his resume. The George Weaver trainee powered home to a 5-1/2 length triumph in the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth July 30 and started his career with a similar style victory in the Royal Palm Juvenile Stakes at Gulfstream. Paco Lopez will direct the No Nay Never colt from post five.

Ray Pennington's King Kontie also brings stakes experience to the table. The Karakontie gelding broke his maiden in dominating gate-to-wire fashion by 5½ lengths at Colonial July 14 and followed with a third in the Hickory Tree Stakes in New Kent three weeks later. The Ollie Figgins trainee will leave from post 10 with Fredy Peltroche in the irons.

The $125,000 TAA Kitten's Joy Stakes has attracted the largest field of the six offerings. Thirteen 2-year-olds will compete 1-1/16 miles, and all but one has a win in their portfolio. Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Triple Espresso, trained by Todd Pletcher. The Omaha Beach colt will make his career bow from post three with Jose Ortiz aboard.

Eight of the others collected maiden-breaking wins at Colonial Downs this summer including Respect the Valleys' Massif, who took second in his debut at 5½ furlongs July 14 then surged home to a 7¼- length performance at the one-mile distance August 5. Jevian Toledo has the mount for trainer Brittany Russell from post nine.

RyZan Sun Racing and Madaket Stables' Mission of Joy is the likely favorite in a field of eight 3-year-old fillies entered in Saturday's $250,000 Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs. The Virginia Oaks is the richest race on the undercard and the sister race to the Grade 2 $500,000 New Kent County Virginia Derby. The 1-1/8 miles turf contest is one of six stakes races on the closing day program at the New Kent, Va. racetrack.

A daughter of Kitten's Joy, Mission of Joy enters off a seventh-place run in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks though she was beaten just three lengths in that 1¼-miles affair. Earlier this year she had a pair of Grade 3 victories in the Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs in March and in the Regret Stakes at Churchill Downs in June. Antonio Gallardo rides Mission of Joy from post seven for trainer Graham Motion, who captured the 2010 edition of this race with Check the Label.

ERJ Racing, Pappas Horse Racing and Neil A. Haymes' Broadway Girls invades from Southern California for trainer Doug O'Neill. The daughter of Army Mule is looking to bounce back from a 13th-place finish in the Grade 2 San Clemente at Del Mar but prior to that disappointing effort she was third in the Grade 3 Providencia in April and ran second in the Grade 3 Honeymoon, both at Santa Anita Park. Jevian Toledo picks up the mount and the pair will depart from post five.

Susan Moulton's Tufani is the only filly in the race to have previous experience over the Colonial Downs turf course having finished second, beaten only three-quarters of a length, in the $150,000 Brookmeade Stakes for Virginia-certified fillies. The daughter of Distorted Humor is trained by Mike Stidham who scored in the 2019 renewal with Carnival Covers. Tufani, who drew post two, will be ridden by two-time Virginia Oaks winner Forest Boyce.

Thirty Thou Kelvin, who races in the colors of SJB Stable, comes in off a wire-to-wire 2¼-length tally in the $150,000 Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park. The John Terranova II-trained daughter of Bolt d'Oro, who will start from post six, will be piloted by two-time Colonial Downs riding champion Trevor McCarthy.

Completing the field are: Jeff Drown's Root Cause (Feargal Lynch, post one); Magdalena Racing and Alfred Riccio's Beautifulnavigator (Cristian Torres, post three); Klaravich Stables' Idea Generation (Flavien Prat, post four); and Don Alberto Stable's Alpha Bella (Jose Ortiz, post eight).
